• RO034-014 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  On a gentle SW-facing slope. Circular grass-covered area (diam. 54.1m NW-SE; 52m NW-SE) defined by a slight earthen bank (Wth 1.4-2.4m; int. H 0.5-0.9m; ext. H 0.6-1.1m) and hedge. There is no visible fosse, but there is a shallow ditch inside the bank (Wth of top 3.3m; Wth of base 1.4m; D 0.15m) W-NNW which is probably modern. There are gaps in the perimeter at NNW (Wth 1m) and SSW (Wth 3.1m). Archaeological testing (02E1824) immediately to the N failed to produce any related material (Read 2004d), and the perimeter NW-NW was eroded in landscaping.   Description

  Marked only on the 1929 ed. of the OS 6-inch map, and situated at the W end of a slight WNW-ESE ridge. A staggered line of three narrow rectangular limestone pillars are roughly aligned WNW-ESE. The W stone (dims 0.4m x 0.3m; H 1.6m) is 1.55m from the central stone (dims 0.45m x 0.4m; H 1.8m) which is 1m from the E stone (dims 0.3m x 0.25m; H 1.5m). The stump of a fourth stone (dims 0.8m x 0.6m; H 0.6m) is 3m NE of the E stone. All four are protruding from an old grass-covered bank (Wth 1.3m; H 0.3m).
