• RO023-171001 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  On a gentle S-facing slope. Oval rush-covered area (dims 42m NE-SW; 34m NW-SE) defined by a low overgrown earthen bank (Wth 4.4m; int. H 0.1m; ext. H 0.9m) NE-S-W which is incorporated into a field and road bank (Wth 2.3-4.6m; int. H 0.7-0.9m; ext. H 0.9-1.9m) elsewhere, and a fosse (at SW: Wth of top 6m; Wth of base 3m; ext. D 0.7m) NE-S-SW which has been extended into a pond at E. There is a modern entrance at NW, but the original entrance (Wth 3.5m) and causeway (Wth 5m) are at SE and lead directly into rath (RO023-171002-). Archaeological testing (01E0564) c. 50m to the NW failed to produce any related material (Read 2003e). Rath (RO023-212----) is c. 120m to the WNW. • RO023-171002 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  On a gentle S-facing slope. Subcircular grass and rush-covered area (dims 38.1m NE-SW; 31m NW-SE) defined by an overgrown earthen bank (Wth 4.4-6.3m; int. H 1m; ext. H 1.1-1.9m), which is reduced to a scarp (H 0.2m) NW-NNE where it shares its fosse with rath (RO023-171001-), lying immediately to the NW. Elsewhere the fosse (at SW: Wth of top 3.8-6.2m; Wth of base 2-3.3m; D 0.6m) is only visible S-NW. There is an entrance (Wth 2.8m) at SE.   Description

  On an E-facing slope. Circular grass-covered area (diam. 30.6m E-W; 30.2m N-S) defined by an earthen bank (Wth 4-4.4m W-N to 5.4-5.6m E-S; int. H 0.5m at W to 0.9m at N; ext. • RO023-177001 Church
  Description

  The parish church of Kildalog, listed as Kildlog in the ecclesiastical taxation of Elphin in 1306 (Cal. doc. Ire., vol. 5, 223), and situated on a level low-lying landscape. Rectangular structure (ext. dims 14.6m E-W; 7.4m N-S) defined by roughly coursed limestone rubble core walls (T 0.9m) which survives complete (H of S wall 3.1m) with good quoins, except the W end of the S wall and the N wall which are reduced to the foundations. The re-built pointed doorway (Wth 0.87m; H 1.6m) with external chamfer in the W gable has a plain rectangular window with external chamfer overhead, and the E gable has a two-light cusped ogee-headed window with square hood moulding and decorated spandrels, but the centre of the head and the mullion are missing. It is within a subcircular enclosure (RO023-177002-) (dims 30.6m E-W; 27.4m N-S) planted with trees and defined by a grass-covered wall footing (Wth 0.8m) SE-SW and a scarp (H 0.4m) elsewhere, but there is no evidence of burial.
