  Description

  Situated on a low N-S ridge in pasture. Raised oval area (dims. 32m N-S; 27m E-W) defined by a levelled bank of earth and stone (Wth. 4.6m; max. H 0.3m). At the external foot of the bank from SW-N-NE is a fosse (Wth. 2m) with an outer bank (Wth. 2m; H 0.25m). Original entrance not recognisable. At the outer foot of the outer bank from SW-N-NE is a modern field boundary. Elsewhere the site is largely obscured by large heaps of field clearance stones and other debris. Compiled by: Patrick F. • SL019-109 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated on top of a N-S ridge in pasture. Raised oval-shaped area (36m N-S; 24.6m E-W) enclosed by a wide, low bank of earth and and stone (Wth. 6m; H 0.45m; H 0.9m). It is best preserved at S and W but is very low internally with a broad external slope. Elsewhere the defining element is a scarp. At the foot of the bank and scarp from NE-S-SSW is a shallow fosse (Wth. 3m - 3.5m). From NW-NNW-N the outer bank is well preserved (Wth. 4m; H 0.65m). From N-S-SSW it is low and degraded. From SSW-W-NNW it is overlain by a field boundary. Original entrance not recognisable. Low, sod-covered, linear rises within the interior may mark internal divisions.   Description

  At Carrowgilpatrick rath (SL019-109----). Close to the top of the external face of the inner bank at W is the opening to a souterrain, now blocked up with stones. The opening leads to what appears to be a small chamber of drystone construction (Wth. c. 1.2m; H 0.7m - 1m) with a lintelled creepway on its E side.   Description

  Located in level, marshy ground at the base of a steep ESE-facing slope which forms the W side of a NE-SW valley. One of a series of fulachtaí fia and burnt mounds which occur over a distance of c. 1.5km along the flat-bottomed valley. An irregular-shaped mound (max. dim. 11.8m ENE-WSW) composed of shattered sandstone within a charcoal matrix. It is highest (H 0.6m) at W with lower extensions at E and SE. The irregular plan and uneven surface of the mound are probably the result of disturbance. A second burnt mound (SL019-212002-) is located 8m to SSW.   Located in level, marshy ground at the base of a steep ESE-facing slope which forms the W side of a NE-SW valley. One of a series of fulachtaí fia and burnt mounds which occur over a distance of c. 1.5km along the flat-bottomed valley. A low, circular mound (diam. c. 7m; H 0.4m) with a well-defined edge from NE-S-W. A second burnt mound (SL019-212001-) is located 8m to NNE.   Description

  In wet pasture, located on the W side of stream, which flows N along the W side of a in a flat-bottomed valley. One of several fulachtaí fia and burnt mounds which occur over a distance of 1.5km along the base of the valley. Remains comprise a semi-circular area (c. 16m NE-SW; c. 10m NW-SE) of firm ground surrounded by soft, wet ground. It is truncated on the straight side, at E, by a NW-SE drain. A layer (D 0.8m) of burnt stone and charcoal is visible in section in the drain. A rivulet flowing from the slope at W cuts the S edge of the mound.   Description

  In wet pasture, in a flat-bottomed N-S valley. One of several fulachtaí fia and burnt mounds which occur over a distance of 1.5km along the base of the valley. A layer (L c.12m NE-SW; D 0.7m) of burnt stone and charcoal is visible beneath a sod layer (D 0.2m) in the N-facing section of a field drain which flanking the S side of a NE-SW field wall/townland boundary. It is possible that this mound and a burnt mound (SL019-252----) located on a rise a few meters to S form parts of a single monument. There is a fulacht fia (SL019-248----) 10m to N.   Description

  Located in a valley bottom, in wet, boggy ground with a stream c. 8m to W. One of several fulachtaí fia and burnt mounds which occur over a distance of 1.5km along the base of this flat-bottomed valley aligned NNE-SSW. Horseshoe-shaped mound (c.10m E-W; 9.9m N-S; H 0.7m). The trough area is marked by a slight hollow (Wth. 2m) at S. There is a burnt mound (SL019-213----) c. 25m to NNW, and a possible burnt mound (SL019-239----) c. 12m to W.   Description

  In wet pasture, located on the W side of stream, which flows N along the W side of a in a flat-bottomed valley. One of several fulachtaí fia and burnt mounds which occur over a distance of 1.5km along the base of the valley. A small heap (c. 3.6m E-W; 2.7m N-S; H 0.5m) of burnt stone and charcoal fragments including some large sandstone slabs. It has an uneven, disturbed appearance and may be displaced material rather than the remains of an 'in situ' mound.   Description

  In wet pasture, on the E bank of a small bend in stream which flows N along the W side of a flat-bottomed valley. One of several fulachtaí fia and burnt mounds which occur over a distance of 1.5km along the base of the valley. Poorly-defined, low rise (c. 13m NE-SW; c. 7m NW-SE; H 0.4m at SW) of firm ground covered with mossy vegetation. Angular stone fragments in black soil was exposed at the SW edge but the full extent of the mound was not determined. There is a fulacht fia (SL019-238----) c. 30m to NE, a burnt mound (SL019-241----) and a possible fulacht fia (SL019-042----) are c. 30m to W, and a burnt mound (SL019-243----) c. 25m to S.   Description

  In wet pasture, adjacent to a stream in a valley bottom. One of several fulachtaí fia and burnt mounds which occur over a distance of 1.5km along the base of this flat-bottomed valley aligned NNE-SSW. The mound appears as a slightly raised area (diam. c. 6m) of firm ground surrounded by soft, boggy ground. It is composed of angular stones in black soil. A relict stream channel stream separates this from a possible fulacht fia (SL019-242----) located c. 4m to SW. The two mounds may be part of the one site.   Description

  In wet pasture, adjacent to a stream in a valley bottom. One of several fulachtaí fia and burnt mounds which occur over a distance of 1.5km along the base of this flat-bottomed valley aligned NNE-SSW. Low, roughly kidney-shaped rise (c. 7m N-S; c. 5m E-W; H 0.2m), composed of angular stones in black soil, with slight hollow at NE possible indicating the position of a trough. A relict stream channel lying immediately to N, intervening between this mound and a burnt mound (SL019-241----) located c.4m NE. The two mounds may be part of the one site.   In wet pasture, on the E of a stream which flows N along the W side of a flat-bottomed valley. One of several fulachtaí fia and burnt mounds which occur over a distance of 1.5km along the base of the valley. An irregular, surface spread (c. 7m N-S; c. 5m E-W) of burnt stone and charcoal fragments exposed in places beneath the sod. There may be further material on the W side of the stream/drain.   In wet pasture, on the E of a stream which flows N along the W side of a flat-bottomed valley. One of several fulachtaí fia and burnt mounds which occur over a distance of 1.5km along the base of the valley. Poorly-defined, low rise (c.5m N-S; c. 4m E-W; H 0.4m on E) covered by heather and gorse shoots. Burnt stones and charcoal fragments were exposed in places where farm stock had eroded the sod (OPW 1994). The full extent of the mound was not determined. As a consequence of land reclamation works in 1995 it was largely obscured by deposits of soil. When first recorded (OPW 1994) this appeared as a largely sod-covered concentration (max. dim. c.5m N-S; max H 0.7m at W) of burnt stone and black soil accumulated against a low rise, abutted by a large boulder on the N side. The full extent of the mound was not determined. As a consequence of land reclamation works in 1995 it was largely obscured by deposits of soil. When first recorded this appeared as a low rise (c. 8m NNE-SSW; c. 5m ESE-WNW) with angular stone fragments in black soil exposed along the W edge (OPW 1994). It was covered with sod and rushes and its full extent was not determined. As a consequence of land reclamation works in 1995 it was largely obscured by deposits of soil. When first recorded this appeared as a low, roughly circular mound (diam. c. 8m; H 0.8m) of shattered stone and black soil, most clearly defined on the W side, and underlying a covering of sod and rushes (OPW field notes, 1994). As a consequence of land reclamation works in 1995 the mound was largely obscured by deposits of soil. There is a burnt mound (SL019-246----) c. 6m to N.   Description

  In wet pasture, located in a sheltered hollow adjacent to a natural spring, at the base of a ridge slope on the W side of a flat-bottomed valley. One of several fulachtaí fia and burnt mounds which occur over a distance of 1.5km along the base of the valley. at the base of an E-facing slope adjacent to a NE-flowing stream/drain. When first visited this appeared as a sod-covered, compact sub-circular mound (15.4m NE-SW; 13m NW-SE; H 0.8m at NE, 1.4m at SW) composed of heat-shattered stone in a charcoal-rich matrix (OPW field notes 1994). The trough may have been located on the N side where the mound is lower and slightly slumped. The mound was partly levelled during land reclamation in 1995.   Description

  In wet pasture, located in soft boggy ground adjacent to a NE-SW stream/drain on the W side of a flat-bottomed valley. One of several fulachtaí fia and burnt mounds which occur over a distance of 1.5km along the base of the valley. A small mound (diam. c.5m; H 0.4m) which appears to be composed of burnt stone, and may not be in situ. The mound may relate to a layer (L c. 3m; D 0.5m) of burnt stone and charcoal visible in section in both section faces of the drain (Wth 1.2m), which is located c. 4m to SSE of the mound. The layer occurs at a depth of c.0.4m beneath the sod. There is a fulacht fia (SL019-248----) 8m to W, and a burnt mound (SL019-250----) 5m to E.   Description

  In wet pasture, located in soft boggy ground adjacent to a NE-SW stream/drain on the W side of a flat-bottomed valley. One of several fulachtaí fia and burnt mounds which occur over a distance of 1.5km along the base of the valley. A surface spread (8m NE-SW; c. 8m NW-SE) of burnt stone and charcoal is truncated at S by a NE-SW field drain (Wth 1.2m). A layer (L 8m NE-SW; D 1m) of burnt mound material is visible in section in both sides of the drain. On the SE side of the drain, mound material underlies a field wall (Wth c. 1.5m), which flanks the drain and serves as the townland boundary.
