  Description

  Situated on a slight E-facing slope in pasture. Slightly raised circular area (diam. 19m) enclosed by a bank of earth and stone (Wth 5m; int. H 0.65m). Immediately outside the bank is a 4m wide level berm with an external bank (Wth 4.05m; int. H 0.75m) on its outer edge, and outside that an external fosse (Wth 4.8m; D 0.5m). The internal bank encloses the site on all sides. From NE-ENE, the external bank and the berm are absent. From WNW-ENE, the fosse is absent. The original entrance is not recognisable. • SL011-077 Ringfort - unclassified
  Description

  Situated on a slight SW-facing slope, immediately NE of a very steep SW facing natural slope, in gently undulating pasture. Slightly raised, roughly D-shaped, area (dims. 20m NW-SE; 20m NE-SW) enclosed by an earthen scarp (ext. H 1.75m) with an external fosse (Wth 4.3m; D 0.4m). From SSW-NW the straight side of the D-shape is defined by a linear scarp. A ramp (Wth 3m) across the scarped edge at SSE marks the position of the original entrance. • SL011-090001 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  In pasture, situated on level ground at W end of broad SW-NE orientated ridge. A steep N-S orientated W facing slope (H 2m) skirts the external edge of the rath at W. Ground level slopes gently, facing SE immediately to the S of the rath. The rath overlooks slightly lower level ground to the W. Raised roughly circular area (25m E-W; 24m N-S) enclosed by a bank of earth and stone (Wth 7m; int. H 0.35m). A break (Wth 2m) in the bank at SE marks the position of the original entrance. A setting of eight small rubble boulders (av. dims 0.2-0.3m; av. H 0.2m) in an E-W orientated line lies on the NE side of the interior. The centre and SE side of the interior undulate irregularly with many low scarps possibly indicating internal divisions or structures. A modern L-shaped quarry (L E-W stretch 8m; L N-S stretch 6m; Wth top 2m; Wth base 0.5m; D 0.4m) abuts the inner face of the bank at W. Four hut sites (SL011-090002-; SL011-090003-; SL011-090004-; SL011-090005-) are located just outside the perimeter of the rath at E-S, and a fifth hut site (SL011-090006-) is located c. 15m to ESE within a field system (SL011-090007-) that borders the E side of the rath. • SL011-090006 Hut site
  Description

  Situated in level pasture 35m to the SE of a rath (SL011-090001-) and incorporated into the SE side of a relic field system (SL011-090007-) associated with the rath. Slightly raised rectangular area (L 5m NE-SW; Wth 4m NW-SE) enclosed by a line of large roughly rectangular boulders (L 0.8m; Wth 0.7m; H 0.4-0.5m) laid as wall footings. The SW end of the NW wall is defined by a stretch (L 1.5m) of earth and stone bank (Wth 1.6m; H 0.4m) associated with the nearby field system. A break in the line of boulders (1.6m) midway along the NW side marks the original entrance. This hut is abutted by elements of the field system (SL011-090007-); on the NW side is a raised rectangular field and the W side is a semi-circular field. • SL011-090007 Field system
  Description

  Situated in level pasture immediately to the E and SE of, and overlooked by, a rath (SL011-090001). The field system consists of a roughly rectangular area (34m NW-SE; 21m NE-SW) defined by a banks of earth and stone (Wth 1.6m; H 0.4m). The NE side is defined by a low meandering earth and stone bank that links to the bank of Clooneen rath at its NW end and to a roughly N-S orientated field boundary at the SE end. The SE side is defined by a linear scarped edge (H 0.3m). The SW side is defined by a low earth and stone bank. From W-NW, the limit of the system is defined by the bank of the rath. The larger rectangular area is divided by relic boundary consisting of a NE-SW orientated SE facing scarp (L 16.6m; H 0.4m) topped with small rubble boulders extending NE from midway along the SW side of the larger area. At the SE corner of the larger area is a hut site (SL011-090006-) and two smaller fields. The first field is a roughly semi-circular area (10m NW-SE; 10m NE-SW) defined by a low earthen bank (Wth 1.6m; H 0.4m) lying to the W of the hut site. The second field lies to the NE of the hut site and consists of a raised rectangular area (12m NW-SE; 5m NE-SW) defined by an earth and stone bank (Wth 1.6m; int. H 0.3m). • SL011-141 Enclosure
  Description

  Located on a gentle elevation in undulating pasture. There is an expanse of more lowlying, wetter land to E and SE, with a stream c. 100m to SE. Slightly raised, sub-rectangular area (36.5m NW–SE; 34m NE–SW) defined by a scarp, and enclosed by a fosse and remnants of an external bank. The enclosing elements have been partly levelled or modified. They are best defined on the SW side. Here, the scarp (H 0.75m) drops into a fosse which is clearly discernible as a shallow depression (W 2m) marked by a growth of irises. Outside the fosse is a broad low rise (Wth c. 3.5-4m; int. H 0.3m; ext H 0.1-0.2m) representing the levelled external bank. On the NW side the enclosing elements have been modified or truncated by incorporation into a field fence/hedgerow, which also skirts the NE corner of the enclosure. On the NE side the scarp is largely levelled, but the fosse and the external bank are clearly visible. The SE side was also incorporated into a NE–SW field fence, recorded on the 1913 OS 6-inch map, but the fence has since been removed, leaving the scrap relatively intact but removing almost all trace of the fosse and external bank. The interior is relatively level. Faint linear undulations, on a NW–SE axis, may represent relict cultivation ridges, possibly related to the period of occupation of a now ruined vernacular cottage located c. 70m to SE. A rath (SL011-090001-), hut sites (SL011-090002- to SL011-090006-) and associated field system (SL011-090007-) are located c. 170m to W. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 12 April 2013
