• SL014-039 Enclosure
  Description

  On a S-facing slope. This monument is depicted as a circular enclosure on the 1837 and 1940 editions of the OS 6-inch map. A rectangular area (27m NW-SE; 16.5m NE-SW) is enclosed by an earthen bank (int. H 0.74m; ext. H 0.84m; Wth 2m). There is no fosse. The entrance is located at the SE (Wth 2.7m). • SL014-040001 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  In farmyard, on level ground. Depicted as a large, roughly circular enclosure on the 1837 and 1940 editions of the OS 6-inch map. Remains comprise a semi-circular area enclosed from N to SE by a bank (diam. c. 54m; overall Wth 4m; H 2.1m). The bank is barely discernable through a mantle of brambles. There is a break (Wth 3.25m) at SE, which currently incorporates a gate. A farmyard occupies area to NW and SW. At the centre of the interior is a rectangular building (SL014-040002-). • SL014-040002 Designed landscape - folly
  Description

  A circular two storey stone building (diam. c. 9m; H 6m) stands in the centre of enclosure SL014-04001. It is constructed of roughly coursed limestone and is bonded with a lime mortar. The base of the structure is obscured due to heavy growth of nettles and brambles and farm machinery. A pointed arch, indicating a doorway or window is located on the north side on ground level but the details of this or any other features cannot be seen through the overgrowth. A string course above the pointed arch ope indicates the first floor. According to the former landowner, Mr Jack Lindsey, access to the building was gained via a doorway on the first floor that is now covered with ivy. Two windows on the first floor, one of which is blocked with modern concrete blocks, both are set in pointed arch opes.   Description

  On high ground in gentle undulating pasture, with extensive views in all directions. A circular area (diam. 28m) enclosed by a bank (int. H 0.75m; ext. H 1.6m; Wth 1.3m) with external fosse (Wth. 3.5m) and an external bank (int. H 0,7m; ext. H 1.25m; Wth 0.7m). The external bank is absent from NE-E-SE.   Description

  In undulating rough pasture. An approximately oval-shaped area (dims. unattainable due to dense vegetation) is enclosed by an earthen bank (int. H unattainable; ext. H at N 1.08m; ext. H at S 1.55m; Wth 2m), with the faint outline of a fosse (Wth 3.3m) and an external earthen bank (int. H 0.65m; ext. H 0.15m; Wth 1.2m), which is located to the N only.   Description

  In undulating rough pasture bordered to the N and E by third class roads. A circular area (c. 30m) is enclosed by an earth and stone bank (int. H 1m; ext. H 2m; Wth 2.2m), a fosse (Wth 2.78m) and an external earth and stone bank (int. H 1.03m; ext H 1.12m; Wth 2.7m). This latter feature is extent for the entire circuit, except from NE to SE where it is truncated by the third class road.   Description

  At a court tomb (SL014-045----). Ó Nualláin (1989, 30) notes that the centre-court tomb stands within ‘a roughly circular embanked enclosure which rises to a maximum height of about 2m. The enclosure appears to be of later construction than the tomb and stones protruding from the bank suggests that spoil from the megalithic cairn may have been utilised in the construction of the bank.' • SL014-047001 Embanked enclosure
  Description

  Located in damp, rush-grown pasture, formerly part of the estate of Cummeen House, 500m S of Cummeen Strand, the inner reaches of Sligo Bay. A circular area (diam. c. 100m) is enclosed by a flat-topped earth and stone bank (Wth 5.48m, top 2.1m; int. H 0.4m; ext. H 1.67m), with an external flat-bottomed fosse (Wth base 2m). The bank is reduced to a scarp at the NE. There are several breaks in the bank, due to animal action, but the location of an original entrance is uncertain. In the centre of the flat interior, there is an enclosure (SL014-047002-), in the centre of which is a cairn (SL014-047003-).   Within an embanked enclosure (SL014-047001-). A circular area (diam. 32m) is defined by a low bank (Wth 4.8m, at top 3m; int. H 0.15m; ext. H 0.24m).   Description

  Within an enclosure (SL014-147002-) at the centre of an embanked enclosure (SL014-047001-). This cairn consists of a stone-built conical mound (diam. 7m; H 2.5m), constructed of unshaped field stones of large (L 0.44m; Wth 0.25m) to medium (L 0.2m; Wth 0.15m) size. It is partly covered with earth, moss and brambles. Timoney (1984, 324, no. 16) suggests that this and a nearby possible barrow (SL014-048----) may be 'nineteenth century demesne monuments on the Ormsby demesne'. Compiled by: Patrick F.   Description

  Located 500m S of Cummeen Strand, the inner reaches of Sligo Bay, on an E-facing slope in undulating pasture, formerly part of the estate of Cummeen House. A flat-topped, sheer-sided mound (17m N-S; 19m E-W; H 4m) of earth and stone construction. The mound is largely grass covered though in areas of slippage, detail of stone revetment can be seen. On the W side there is a broad V-shaped depression, forming a path to the top (measuring at the top 4m E-W; 2m N-S; D 1m). Timoney (1984, 324, no. 17) suggests that this and a nearby cairn (SL014-047003-) may be 'nineteenth century demesne monuments on the Ormsby demesne'. Compiled by: Patrick F.   Description

  Situated on an N-facing slope in pasture. This potential monument is not marked on the 1837 OS 6-inch map. On the 1940 edition of OS 6-inch map it is depicted as a circular hachured feature lying within woodland associated within the demesne of 'Cummeen House'. The woodland has been removed and the area is now used for pasture. There are no surviving remains above ground level. This is in all probability a levelled landscape feature. Compiled by: Patrick F.   Description

  Detached stone tower, built c. 1840. Rubble uncoursed limestone walling stepping out at lower stage, square profile strings at first floor and roof, stone external staircase. Single-storey lean-to outbuildings built around base. Flat roof structure not visible. Pointed-arch window openings, windows missing. Set in farmyard.

• Cummeen House, house, 1750–1850 · Regional interest
  Description

  Remains of large stone house, built c. 1800, now in ruins with Gothic-style follies to east and south. Rubble limestone walling to north and east and farmyard with rubble masonry outbuildings to north. Folly to east having central triple-lancet openings with pointed-arched openings to either side. Limestone and sandstone rubble masonry with rubble stone voussoirs to arches. Set back from road on private laneway and surrounded by farmland, house c. 1980.
