- SL018-047001 Ringfort - rath
Description
Situated on a NW-SE rise on top of an E-W ridge. Raised circular platform (44m E-W; 41.5m N-S) defined by a substantial earthen bank (Wth 7.9-8.5m; int. H 1.2-1.5m; ext. H 2.9-3.6m). Enclosing the base of the platform is a fosse (Wth 3.8m; ext. D 0.5-1.5m) which is deepest at S–W. The entrance is at E where there is a break in bank, eroded now to a width of c. 6m, with an accompanying causeway (Wth. 4m) across fosse. Within the W part of the interior is a circular, flat-topped mound (SL018-047002-). Description
At a rath (SL018-047001-). Within the W half of the rath interior is a circular, flat-topped mound (H 2.7m; diam. at base 12.5m, of top 3.8m). A kerb of large stones encloses the base of the mound, and stones also protrude from the sod on the top of the mound and on the sides. Description
At a rath (SL018-047001-). A narrow, linear depression (L 10.5m; Wth. 1.2m; D 0.3m) extends from a gap (Wth 2m) in the enclosing bank at S into the rath interior, curving slightly towards NNW. Description
Situated at the N edge of the top of a low rise or knoll in undulating pasture. Slightly raised circular area (diam. 20.4m) enclosed by a much degraded bank (Wth 1.7-1.9m; int. H 0.1-0.3m; ext. H 0.5-0.6m) of earth and stone. There is a gap (Wth 1m), whose N terminal is lined with a large slab, at E. Close to the centre of the interior is a small circular hut site (SL018-072002-). Description
In wet, marshy pasture at the base of an E-W ridge, situated on a small island of firm ground on the SE side of a naturally-occurring, spring-fed pool. It comprises a low semicircular mound (7m N-S; 4m E-W; H 0.4m) of shattered sandstone fragments within a matrix of black soil. The trough area is at W, facing the pool. The top of the mound is partly eroded by farm stock. There is a fulacht fia (SL018-091001-) c. 30m to NE, a burnt mound (SL018-091002-) c. 80m to NE, and a another burnt mound (SL018-091003-) c. 60m to N. Compiled by: Patrick F. Description
Situated in wet, marshy pasture at the base of an E-W ridge, 10m SE of a NE–SW field drain. This comprises a well-defined, horseshoe-shaped mound (10m NE-SW; 7.5m NW-SE; H 0.6m). The hollow area (Wth 2.9m) is at NW. There is another fulacht fia (SL018-091----) c. 30m to SW, a burnt mound (SL018-091002-) c. 35m to NE, and another burnt mound (SL018-091003-) c. 15m to NW. Description
Situated in wet, marshy pasture at the base of an E-W ridge. Not marked on any edition of the OS 6-inch map. This fulacht fia comprises a low, subcircular mound (diam. c. 7m; H 0.4m). Sandstone fragments and black soil are exposed on the NW side, which has been eroded by farm stock. There is another burnt mound (SL018-091003-) c. 15m to WSW, a fulacht fia (SL018-091002-) c. 35m to SW, and another fulacht fia (SL018-091----) c. 80m to SW. Compiled by: Patrick F. Description
Situated in wet, marshy pasture at the base of an E-W ridge. Not marked on any edition of the OS 6-inch map. Four fulachta fiadh in proximity. The first three are located along the SE side of a NE-SW drain. There are intervening spaces of 30m and 35m between them. The fourth lies at the NW side of the drain. This, the fourth fulacht fia, comprises a D-shaped rise (dims. 13m NE-SW; 11.3m NW-SE - H 0.6m) composed of fragments of burnt stone in block soil.
