• SL008-062 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated in low-lying level wet pasture 10m to the S of the E-W flowing Carney River. Another rath (SL008-061----) is visible c.400m to the NW. Slightly raised circular area (diam. 21m) enclosed by a broad flat-topped bank of earth (Wth 6.4m; int. H 1m). At the external base of the bank is a silted up fosse (Wth 2.5m). The bank encloses the site SW-SSE and is best preserved W-NE where it is overgrown with dense gorse. From NE-SSE and SW-W the bank is very denuded and is absent SSE-SW where the circuit is defined by a scarp (ext. H 0.2m). The fosse encloses the site SE-NW only and is visible as a band (Wth 2.5m) of wetter ground around the site. A modern N-S orientated field drain lies along the line of the absent fosse ENE-SE and an E-W orientated modern field drain, now relic and largely silted up, lies along the outer edge of the fosse SSE-SW. • SL008-063 Fulacht fia
  Description

  In low-lying level wet pasture 120m to the N of the foreshore of Drumcliff Bay. Not marked on the 1836-7 edition of the OS 6-inch map. Only the S portion, marked by hachures, is visible on the 1940-1 edition. There is no definite trace of a fulacht fia now visible at ground level. Compiled by: Patrick F. • SL008-157 Souterrain
  Description

  In pasture, located on the brow of a low rise on an E-W ridge, which borders the N side of Drumcliff Bay. Ground falls away gradually for 150m to the stony shoreline. A souterrain in Finned townland was known about in the early 19th century when it was noted in the OS Name Books (OSNB Co. Sligo, vol. 1, 293), however, its exact location was not recorded, and it was, therefore, not listed in the RMP (1995). It was rediscovered in the early 21st century (pers. comm. Leo Leyden, 2019). A subcircular opening (max. dim. c. 1m) is visible at surface ground level. It opens into a stone-lined subterranean cavity (D c. 1m), part of a drystone-built chamber or passage. The surface opening is not an original entrance, but most likely resulted from the collapse of a roof lintel. The chamber/passage is now partly infilled with loose soil, and its original form is difficult to determine; drystone walling is evident at S-SW, possibly a side or end wall, and the chamber/passage appears to continue to NNW or N. • SL008-216 Midden
  Description

  Located on the S shoreline of Finned point which juts into the inner reaches of Drumcliff Bay. This midden (L c. 6m E−W; D 0.2m) is exposed in section in the land-edge scarp (H c. 2.7m) bordering a stony beach. It is visible just below the sod line (D 0.05-0.1m) at a height of 2.6m above the beach, and overlies boulder clay. It consists of a dense layer of oysters shells, mixed with lesser quantities of cockles, periwinkles, mussels, whelks and limpets in a matrix of brown and reddish soils. Small and medium-sized angular stones are intermixed with the shells. Parts of the layer have slumped or collapsed where the section face is eroding, and parts are obscured by grass/vegetation. • SL008-217 Midden
  Description

  Located on the S shoreline of the Finned peninsula overlooking the inner reaches of Drumcliff Bay. This midden is exposed in section in the vertical land-edge scarp (H 2m) bordering a stony beach. It occurs at a height of 1.4m above beach level, and c. 0.4-0.5m below the top of the scarp. It underlies a layer of moderately stony, grey soil and overlies compact, stony orange boulder clay. It is evident as a thin layer (L c. 2m WSW−ESE; D 0.05m) of sea shells, oysters, cockles and occasional periwinkles, intermixed with occasional burnt stone in a dark brown soil matrix.
