• SL047-051 Moated site
  Description

  In undulating pasture, on the E side of a road and adjacent to the Sligo-Roscommon border. A raised square area (31m N-S; 31m E-W) enclosed by two earthen banks with intervening and external fosses. The inner bank (Wth 3.6m; int. H 0.4m; ext. H 1.1m) is flat-topped with a low internal rim and a steep-sided external slope. The outer bank (Wth 7.1m; int. H 1.5m; ext. H 1.6m) is flat-topped and broad based with steeply sloping sides and is substantial on the E and S sides. A section of the outer bank (L 14m) at the S end of the W side is levelled. The intervening fosse (Wth 2.6m) is flat-bottomed and steep-sided. The external fosse (Wth 2.5m; D 0.35m) is evident as a shallow depression on the E and S sides and is almost entirely silted-up elsewhere. The entrance is at the E end of the N side with gaps in the inner and outer banks (Wth 2m and 1.8m respectively) and a causeway (Wth 2.5m) across the fosse. A single large stone flanks the W side of the causeway. Immediately E of the entrance, the inner face of the external bank has a distinctive slump (Wth c. 2m; L c. 4-5m). The interior is level and grass-covered. There is a low sod-covered rise (c. 9.5m N-S; c. 3.6m E-W; H 0.3m) in the centre, with a line of closely set stones (L 2m) at the N end of the E side and possibly also on the W side. A relict field boundary extends for c. 55m from the SW corner of the moated site. Appended to the S side of this boundary, at its junction with the moated site, is a roughly triangular earthen platform (7.3m N-S; 16m E-W; H 0.55m). The garden of a recently constructed bungalow is 16m to W.   Description

  In pasture, on a gentle slope towards the W end of, and occupying almost the full width of, a narrow ridge. A slightly raised roughly D-shaped area (dims. 24.6m N-S; 32m E-W) defined SW-SE by an eroded bank (Wth 2.7m; int. H 0.15m; ext. H 1m) and on the straight S side by a poorly defined scarp (H 0.3m) which merges into the natural slope. There is a break (Wth 7.5m) in the bank at NNW. An external fosse, indicated by a band of irises (Wth c. 3.5m) in waterlogged ground, is evident intermittently W-E. The interior slopes slightly down to W; the E half is covered with rushes and irises. Indicated as an embanked circular area on the 1914 OS 6-inch map.   In pasture, at the W end of a ridge. A raised roughly circular area (int. diam. 27m x 29.5m) enclosed by an earthen bank (Wth 2.5m; int. H. 1.35m; ext. H 1.15m) with an external fosse (Wth 3.5m; D 0.6m). The entrance (Wth 3.5m) is at SE with a causeway across the fosse. • SL047-073001 Field boundary
  Description

  Listed in the RMP (1994) an classified as 'Enclosure'. Not marked on the 1838 edition of the OS 6" map. Depicted a small wedge-shaped field on the 1914 edition of the OS 6-inch map. On a natural terrace of dry ground, in otherwise waterlogged pasture. Upon inspection in 2000 the visible remains comprised a roughly triangular area (28.5m WNW-ESE; c. 39m NNE-SSW) defined by a flat-topped earthen bank (Wth 2.2m; int. H 0.2m; ext. H 1.1.2m) with an external flat-bottomed fosse (Wth 2m; ext. D 0.4m) on the NNW and SW sides and by a linear field boundary (Wth 2m; int. H 0.75m; ext. H 1.5m) with a substantial external drain, along the E side. There is a break (Wth c. 10m) at the NE end of the NNW side which allows cattle access to interior. Remnants of a counterscarp bank (Wth 1.5m; int. H 0.55m; ext. H 0.3m) are evident outside the fosse on the SW side. The interior is raised c. 0.8m above the external ground level on the NNW and SW sides. The field boundary extends beyond the enclosure to SSW while at the NNE end it intersects with another field boundary. It was concluded that this is a natural terrace which has been transformed, probably in recent times, into a roughly triangular field. It is likely to be post-1700 AD in date. • SL047-073002 Field boundary
  Description

  Listed in both the SMR (1989) and the RMP (1995) and classified as 'Enclosure'. In waterlogged pasture, immediately N of a triangular field (SL047-073001-). Inspection in 2000 revealed that this is a low, naturally-occurring elevation with sides that slope gently down to the E and SE. This area is now enclosed by field boundaries creating a roughly square field (c. 34.5m E-W; 33m N-S) with linear N and E sides and gently curved S and W sides. The interior slopes gently down to NW. The W half of the field is planted with conifers while much of the E half is occupied by a corrugated iron barn and a small concrete enclosure and cattle crush.   Description

  In poorly drained rough grazing, on top of a narrow ridge. A raised roughly circular area (26.5m N-S; 30m E-W) defined by a scarp (H 0.8m) with an external fosse. The scarp is most substantial at N where it retains a slight internal lip (H 0.15m) but is reduced to a barely perceptible rise NE-SE. The fosse (Wth 4m; D 0.35m) is clearly defined SE-NE but evident only as a flat band of waterlogged ground marked by irises NE-SE. The interior is bisected N-S by a field boundary flanked by drains. The low remnants of a N-S field boundary lies 4m to E of the rath.   Description

  In rough grazing, on top of and occupying almost the entire width of a narrow E-W ridge. A slightly raised circular area (31.7m N-S; 31.4m E-W) defined WSW-NW by a mostly levelled bank (Wth 5.7m; int. H 0.25m; ext. H 1.1m) with a slight internal rim and elsewhere by a broad low scarp (H 1.3m). The scarp is lowest NE-SE where it merges with the external ground level and is most substantial SE-SW where there is a broad external terrace (Wth 5m) from which the ground falls away steeply. The interior slopes slightly down from the centre to S. Another rath (SL047-080----) lies c. 20m to E and a bowl-barrow (SL047-079----) c. 50m to NNE.   Description

  In marshy ground, in a narrow valley flanked by two long narrow ridges. A roughly circular mound (diam. at base 13.8m NNE-SSW; 11.6m WNW-ESE; diam. at top: c. 3m; H 2.3m) with a small circular hollow (diam. 1.5m; D 0.2m) in the centre of its top. The SW portion is highest and steepest to compensate for the slight ground slope. A narrow terrace (Wth 0.8m; H 0.7m) is cut into the base of the mound S-SW. A barrow (SL047-083006-) lies c. 450m to NNE and two raths (SL047-078----; SL047-080----) are c. 50m to SSW and c. 70m to SE, respectively.   Description

  In rough grazing, straddling the top of a narrow E-W ridge. A circular area (c. 36m N-S; 36.5m E-W) defined by the remains of an earthen bank. The interior is defined NE-SE by a slight flat-topped rise (Wth 2.9m; int. H 0.1m; ext. H 0.1m), SE-SW by a barely perceptible scarp, WSW-NW by remains of a levelled bank (Wth 2.8m; int. H 0.2m) and NNW-NNE by a low scarp (H 0.6m). The interior is slightly dome-shaped following the natural contour of the ridge and is covered in rushes. Inside the bank at E and W is a band of slightly wetter ground (Wth c. 2.5m) which dips slightly below the level of the interior. A field boundary and drain lie immediately to N. A rath (SL047-078----) lies c. 20m to W and a bowl-barrow (SL047-079----) c. 70m to NW. • SL047-081 Ritual site - holy well
  Description

  In a grassy verge, on the W side of the Frenchpark-Boyle road and adjacent to the E side of a field boundary. The well, which is slightly sunken below the road level, is enclosed in a dilapidated concrete structure (int. dims. 1.1m E-W; 1.05m N-S). The entrance is in the centre of the S wall. Access to the well is through a small concrete annexe immediately to the front into which steps lead down from ground level. There is no evidence of recent veneration at this well. In 1836 it was recorded that the 'patron-day is the 11th of August, St. Araght's (Athracht's) Day, on which stations used to be performed' (OSL, 233). The site of a nunnery (SL047-083001-) and a graveyard (SL047-083002-) are c. 600m to N. • SL047-083001 Religious house - unclassified
  Description

  In gently undulating pasture, in Killaraght graveyard (SL047-083002-) and within a field system (SL047-083004-). Probably the site of a convent founded by St Attracta which, according to tradition, was built by St Patrick (Gwynn and Hadcock 1970, 320-21). A nunnery and hospital (SL047-083007-) existed here into the 16th century and an abbess of Killaraght is mentioned in 1591 (ibid.). A 'house of nuns of Killaraght' still stood here in the 1680s (Ó Muraíle 2002, 242, n. 48). It is also probably the site of the medieval parish church of Killaraght. According to local tradition, there was a church ruin in the NW quadrant of the graveyard. Several blocks of dressed stone, found during a graveyard clean up, are the only recent indication of a church here (Mount 1994a). A road (SL047-083003-) lies c. 200m to the NE. 'Toberaraght' holy well (SL047-081----) is c. 600m to the S. • SL047-083002 Graveyard
  Description

  A subrectangular graveyard (53.5m N-S; c. 41m E-W) enclosed on the S, W and N sides by a stone wall. The E wall has been removed and the graveyard has been extended c. 100m to the E. This extension is enclosed by a modern wall and is accessed from the main road to E. Headstones in the older section date to the 19th and 20th centuries. The NW quadrant is slightly raised and, according to local tradition, is probably the site of a church (SL047-083001-). The graveyard is still in use. Several dressed limestone and sandstone slabs of medieval appearance were uncovered during a graveyard clean-up scheme, including a gabled sandstone slab with 'four projections on its upper surface each of which has a swastika carved on its face' and 'a number of fragments of windows decorated with plate tracery' (Mount 1994a). Also uncovered were some 18th-century style cut stones including three pieces of an archway and a plinth inscribed 'POSITUM 1742' (ibid.). A flint arrowhead was also found in the graveyard (pers. comm. M. A. Timoney). A field system (SL047-083004-) lies to the S and W. There is a moated site (SL047-083008-) c. 50m to the W and a mound barrow (SL047-083006-) c. 150m to the SW. A road (SL047-083003-) lies c. 200m to the NE and 'Toberaraght' holy well (SL047-081----) is c. 600m to the S.   Description

  In undulating stony pasture. Indicated only on the 1914 OS 6-inch map as a linear feature (Wth c. 10m; L c. 750m), flanked by field boundaries, extending in a NE direction from c. 150m ENE of the mound barrow (SL047-083005-) to almost the Roscommon border. It was levelled during land reclamation and there are no visible remains of the SW half. The NE half is evident intermittently as a slight rise though its NE end has been truncated by a row of bungalows. Killaraght graveyard (SL047-083002-) and the site of a nunnery (SL047-083001-) lie c. 200m to SW. • SL047-083004 Field system
  Description

  In undulating stony pasture. A system of roughly rectangular fields indicated only on the 1914 OS 6-inch map. The boundaries of these are mainly earthen with a few of earth and stone. They are of fairly uniform dimensions (Wth 1.7-2m; H 0.5m) but vary greatly in degree of preservation. Killaraght graveyard (SL047-083002-) and the site of a church (SL047-08301-) are roughly in the centre of the field system. Immediately to SW of the graveyard is a faint pattern of two or three small fields (c. 14m E-W; c. 28m N-S) which are not indicated on any OS 6-inch map. An even more faint outline of a similar field pattern is evident to SE. A moated site (SL047-083008-) lies c. 50m W of the graveyard. The relict field system is now overlain by a grid pattern of N-S and E-W field boundaries. There is a mound barrow (SL047-083005-) c. 150m SW of the graveyard and another (SL047-083006-) c. 170m to NE, both also within the field system. In the same townland is a second field system (SL047-084003-) c. 300m to E.   Description

  On a slight rise, bordering an expanse of wet pasture to WSW and within a field system (SL047-083004-). A circular steep-sided earthen mound (diam. at base 11.6m; diam. at top 6m). The S portion of the mound is highest (H 1.5m) due to a natural dip in the ground level. The top of the mound is defined by a slight rim and there is a hollow (diam. 3m) in the centre. This mound is located within a rectangular field (30m N-S; 49.5m E-W) defined by a low earthen bank (Wth 2m; H 0.4m). A mound (SL047-083005-) lies c. 400m to NE and a graveyard (SL047-083002-) c. 150m to NE.   Description

  In pasture, at the base of a gentle slope and c. 50m W of a graveyard (SL047-083002-). A rectangular area (31.5m NW-SE; c. 20m NE-SW) defined on the SE, SW and NW sides by a bank (Wth 2.4m; int. H 0.2m; ext. H 0.5m) with an external fosse evident as a slight depression marked by rushes. The enclosing element on the NE side is now indistinct though a band of rushes may indicate a silted-up fosse. The interior is raised on the W side to create a dry level area. The moated site is within a field system (SL047-083004-). • SL047-083009 Cross-slab
  Description

  The following account of its discovery is recorded by Timoney (2008-9): ‘In April 2007, on a visit to Killaraght graveyard. Co. Sligo, to check an 18th century headstone the author discovered an Early Christian cross slab which had been reused as a grave memorial in recent times. The Old Red Sandstone slab was lying on the ground in front of the Goldrick family grave plot in the old section of the graveyard. The slab measures 99cm long, the upper two thirds is about 40cm in width with a maximum thickness of 8.5cm. The left side of the slab is complete but parts of the right side have been cut or broken off. The inscribed cross with T-shaped terminals measures 14.5cm long and 21cm wide. The cross is cut in a V-section groove with a maximum of 1.5cm in width and a depth of 0.5cm. The terminals are U-shaped in section.’ Compiled by: Paul Walsh Date of upload: 2 May 2017

  Description

  In rough grazing, on top of a low ridge. A raised circular area (19.8m N-S; 20m E-W) defined by a scarp with an intervening fosse and an outer bank. The scarp (H 1.2m) has an almost vertical face and retains a slight internal lip (Wth 2m) S-SW. The outer bank (Wth 2.5m; int. H 0.55m; ext. H 0.4m) is evident NE-SSW, incorporated into or replaced by a linear field boundary at W and truncated by another field boundary at N. The intervening fosse (Wth 3.3m) is also evident NE-SSW, elsewhere it is distinguished by a band of wet ground densely covered with rushes. A section of a linear bank (L 14m; Wth 2.3m; int. H 0.7m; ext. H 0.55m) evident ENE-ESE, 2.3m outside the external bank may be the remains of a second bank but could also be a remnant of a field boundary. The interior slopes slightly down from the centre to N. A slump (Wth 1.4m) in the scarp at ESE is directly opposite a break (Wth 3.5m) in the outer bank. A field system (SL047-084003-) lies c. 20m N and downslope of the rath and an enclosure (SL047-084002-) lies c. 30m to E. There is a burnt mound (SL047-084004-) c. 100m to SE.   Description

  In rough grazing, straddling the top of a low ridge. A raised roughly square area (18.4m N-S; 17.8m E-W), with rounded corners, enclosed by an inner earthen bank (Wth 3m; int. H 0.25m; ext. H 1.05m) except along the E half of the N side where a broad slumped scarp exists. There is a gap (Wth 3.6m) in the bank at the N end of the W side and another (Wth 1.4m) at the N end of the E side. A short section of a possible outer bank (L 4m; Wth c. 3m) is evident at SE, 3m outside the inner bank. The interior slopes down to N. A sunken linear trackway (Wth at base 2.3m), flanked along its E side by an earthen bank (Wth 3.8m; int. H 1.3m; ext. H 0.4m), lies immediately to E of the enclosure where its construction has modified the external bank face. A field system (SL047-084003-) lies c. 20m N and downslope of the rectangular enclosure. A rath (SL047-084001-) lies c. 30m to W and a burnt mound (SL047-084004-) lies c. 80m to S.   Description

  In pasture, c. 20m N and downslope of a rath (SL047-084001-) and a rectangular enclosure (SL047-084002-). A pattern of earthen field boundaries (Wth 2m; H 0.5m) and scarps define small fields covering an area c. 200m x 200m. The fields are mostly irregular in size and shape though some are square or subrectangular (average field size: 15m x 15m) and some have slightly raised interiors. The field boundaries generally follow sinuous curving lines on natural contours. The field system is indicated only on the 1914 OS 6-inch map and survives mostly as depicted, though some of the smaller subdivisions are not indicated and a roughly D-shaped field at the N limit has been removed during land reclamation. In the same townland is a second field system (SL047-083004-) c. 300m to W. There is a burnt mound (SL047-084004-) to S.   Description

  In a field of rushes, at the base of a slope and immediately SW of a well. A low roughly circular grass-covered rise (c. 10m N-S; c. 13m E-W; H 0.6-0.8m). The soil is noticeably stony and incorporates some small pieces of iron slag. A rath (SL047-08401-) lies c. 100m to NW and an enclosure (SL047-084002-) lies c. 80m to N.
