  Description

  At a break of slope on the NE side of a ridge and immediately NW of a ruined house. A slightly raised circular area (27.6m NNE-SSW) defined by an earthen bank (Wth 4.5m; int. H 1m; ext. H 0.7m) S-N. The bank is incorporated into a field boundary S-W, gradually peters out W-N and is levelled N-S. Surviving sections of the bank are riddled with rabbit burrows. A shallow external depression noted S-W may indicate a silted-up fosse. The interior is level; the W half is cut by forestry trenches and planted with conifers; felled sycamore tree and dense overgrowth cover the E half. There is a square concrete tank (3m x 3m) in the SE quadrant. Mature sycamore trees grow around the perimeter. • SL025-033 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  In pasture, on the S-facing slope of a ridge. A large rath with a smaller oval enclosure (SL025-033001-) in its N half. The rath consists of a circular area (50.8m N-S; 49m E-W) enclosed by an earthen bank (Wth 1.7m; int. H 1m; ext. H 1.1m) that is incorporated into a field boundary SSE-SSW. There are gaps in the bank at SW (Wth c. 4m) and at NNE (Wth 3.8m); a rough farm track curves across the interior between these gaps. The interior slopes down to S. An area in the centre of the interior has been quarried, in places up to 1m in depth. There is a stone-built shed in the NE quadrant. A dense patch of irises grows on a fairly level part of the interior just inside the bank at S. A rectangular garden surrounding a disused cottage is built onto the N side of both enclosures. • SL025-033001 Enclosure
  Description

  Within the N half of a rath (SL025-033----). A raised oval area (21m NE-SW; 17.4m NW-SE) enclosed by an earthen bank (Wth 1.7m; int. H 0.1m; ext. H 1.15m) NNE-NNW and by the bank of the rath NNW-NNE, the bank being widest at N (Wth 2.9m) where it merges with the rath. Traces of external stone facing are evident on the bank at SW. There is a gap (Wth 1.4m) in the bank at NE. The S portion of the interior is raised to compensate for the hillslope. A small slightly raised rectangular area (3.4m x 2m), defined by a low sod-covered bank (Wth 0.6m; int. H 0.4m; ext. H 0.5m), is built against the internal face of the bank at NNW. Part of the bank and the interior are cut away along the NE arc and a stone hut (c. 3m x 3m) is built against the external slope. A rectangular garden surrounding a disused cottage abuts the enclosure and the rath at N.   Description

  In pasture, straddling the S end of the summit of a ridge. A slightly raised roughly circular area (44.5m NNW-SSE; 48.5m NE-SW) enclosed by an earthen bank (Wth 2.7m; int. H 1.2m; ext. H 1.4m) all round apart from WSW-WNW where the bank is levelled for c. 12m. The bank SE-S is low internally (H 0.5m) but high externally to compensate for the hillslope. There is a possible entrance at E (Wth 4m) with traces of stone facing on its N side. Gaps (Wth 2m) occur in the bank at NE and SSW. The interior slopes gently down to SE. In the SE quadrant an area (32m N-S; c. 34m NE-SW) is defined by an arc of sod-covered bank (Wth 2.7m; int. H 0.55m; ext. H 0.4m) SW-E. A NW-SE field boundary crosses the SW quadrant. Traces of a levelled NW-SE field boundary (Wth 1m) are barely discernible crossing the centre of the interior and continuing as an extant boundary to SE of the rath. Another field boundary shown on the 1914 OS 6-inch map extending NE from bank at N has been levelled. A bowl-barrow (SL025-035----) lies c. 60m to NE.   Description

  In pasture, at the E end of the summit of a ridge which affords a panoramic view. A circular sod-covered flat-topped mound of earth and stone (diam. 18.5m at base, 4.8m at top; H 4.2m). A small section of the top of the S edge of the mound has been dug away. The sides are steep and eroding in places. A field boundary (not shown on the 1838 OS 6-inch map) is immediately to NE. A rath (SL025-034----) lies c. 60m to SW.   Description

  In pasture, on a low rise at the N end of a long narrow field. Indicated on the 1838 OS 6-inch map as an embanked circular area (diam. c. 20m). This rath is now partially levelled and obscured by dense overgrowth. Remains consist of a circular area (23m E-W) defined by a slightly curved field boundary SW-WNW and by an arc of scarp N-SE. The E half of the interior is crossed on a N-S axis by a farm trackway and field boundary. In the W half of the interior is a slightly raised area (12m N-S) with a depression (Wth 3m; D 0.5m), probably the result of recent disturbance, extending c. 5m to W. • SL025-055001 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  In pasture, on a low rise. A slightly raised oval area (49.7m NNW-SSE; 70.4m ENE-WSW) enclosed by an earthen bank and an external fosse. The bank (Wth 3.7m; int. H 0.8m; ext. H 2m) has an almost vertical external face and is incorporated into a field boundary WSW-WNW. There is a possible entrance (Wth 2m) at NE with a low causeway across the fosse. Gaps occur in the bank at SE, S and SW, ranging in width from 1-2m. A quarry pit (12m N-S; 10m E-W; D 1.2m) abuts the external face of the bank at ENE. The fosse (Wth 3m; D 1m) is evident N-NE; elsewhere the line of the fosse is marked by a slight depression and a dense growth of irises. A slight rise (Wth c. 2.4m) on the external side of the fosse at NE may be remains of an outer bank though there is no further evidence of such. The interior is grass-covered and slopes gently down to S and SE. There is a souterrain (SL025-055002-) in the SW quadrant and a rectangular enclosure, with a slightly sunken interior, in the E half. The latter consists of a rectangular area (18.3m WNW-ESE; 24.5m NNE-SSW) enclosed by an earthen bank (Wth 2.2m; int. H 0.9m; ext. H 0.4m) which is best evident on the N and W sides, low and eroded on the E and S sides with boulders lining the internal face on the N side.   Description

  In the SW quadrant of a rath (SL025-055001-). An opening (Wth 1m; D 0.6m) in the bank at SW reveals a stone-built souterrain with a lintelled roof. A linear hollow (L c. 7m) extends eastwards from the bank into the interior of the rath. Two slabs, probably roof lintels, protrude from the sod at the E end of the hollow.   Description

  In pasture, at a break of slope on the E-facing side of a ridge. A raised circular area (int. diam. 26.5m NE-SW) enclosed by two earthen banks and an intervening fosse. The inner bank (Wth 3.8m; int. H 0.55m; ext. H 1.9m), with traces of internal stone kerbing, is evident all round apart from a short section (L c. 5m) at E which is levelled. The entrance (Wth 2m) is at SSW, with traces of possible stone facing on its E side. The outer bank (Wth 2.8m; int. H 0.55m; ext. H 0.65m) and intervening fosse (Wth 3m) are evident only S-W. The interior is level and there is a souterrain (SL025-057002-) in the N half. A house has been built immediately to NE and a disused railway line lies immediately to S. • SL025-058 Megalithic tomb - unclassified
  Description

  On a flat tract of ground in rolling pasture. Two groups of orthostats stand 3.6m apart, four to the SW and three to the NE. Each group seems to represent a chamber. The four to the SW include two opposed orthostats (H 0.8m), 1.75m apart, standing at either side of a stone set transversely between them. This seems to be a sillstone (H 0.5m). Some 1.5m W of the more southerly of the two opposed stones there is another orthostat, apparently a sidestone. The chamber represented by the second group of orthostats seems to have been of polygonal outline. It measures 2.3m N-S and is represented by three orthostats, one at N, E and S. There are some prostrate and partly concealed stones at the site. Faint traces of mound adjoin the southern side of each chamber.   In pasture, at a break in slope on the N side of a ridge. A raised circular area (37.2m N-S; 37.7m E-W) enclosed by an earthen bank (Wth 5.6m; int. H 0.7m; ext. H 2.7m). Gaps occur in the bank at N (Wth 3m), at W (Wth 1.5m) and at E (Wth 1m). A field boundary has been built onto the external face of the bank E-SW. The bank has been dug into in several places E-S. A shallow depression (Wth 1.4m), evident outside the bank W-NNW, may be the remains of an external fosse. There is a souterrain (SL025-059002-) in the SW quadrant of the interior.
