  Description

  In a meadow, on the E bank of the Owenmore River, overlooked to SE and S by undulating rising ground. A level rectangular area (35.4m NE-SW; 25m NW-SE) defined on the NE, SE and SW sides by a scarp (H 0.9m), with an intervening fosse and an outer bank. On the NW side it is defined by the vertical riverbank (H 1m). The scarp is topped by a slight grassy rise (Wth 2m), in parts along the NE side and at the N end of the SE side. The fosse (Wth 3.6m; D 0.7m) is flat-bottomed, waterlogged and marked by a dense growth of rushes. The outer bank (Wth 4.2m; int. H 1.5m; ext. H 0.45m) is broad, low and compact. The enclosing elements stop short of the riverbank on both the NE and SW sides but this appears to be the result of relatively recent disturbance. The entrance (Wth 3m), with a causeway across the fosse, is midway along the SE side where the N terminal of the outer bank is expanded. The interior is densely covered with rushes and irises except for a grassy strip (Wth 3-4m) bordering the riverbank. At the E corner of the interior, a small rectangular two-tiered earthen platform (5m NW-SE; 4m NE-SW) projects from the scarp into the fosse. The SE side (Wth 2m NE-SW) is at the same level as, and is a continuation of, the top of the scarp. The NE side is at a lower level forming a flat step (H 0.45m) that projects 2m into the fosse. The fosse appears to swing out slightly to accommodate the projection but is nevertheless narrower (Wth 2m) here than elsewhere. Opposite the projection the inner face of the outer bank incorporates a significant amount of stone. At the S corner of the interior the scarp incorporates a much less substantial projection (1.2m NE-SW; c. 2.5m NW-SW) into the fosse. On the N half of the SE side, a berm (Wth 4.8m) separates the outer bank from the fosse (Wth 3.5m; D 0.7m) which lies parallel to the outer bank on the SE side but at the E corner swings wide, terminating at the riverbank c. 15 to N. This is clearly visible on an aerial photograph (IASAP, 3038211) but is only barely discernible on the ground.   Description

  In undulating pasture. A circular area (int. diam. 35m) enclosed by an earthen bank (Wth 3m; ext. H 1m) which is overgrown with bushes and trees. The bank is extremely low at N possibly indicating the location of the entrance. Faint traces of a possible external fosse were also noted.   Description

  In level pasture, on the S bank of the Owenmore River. Immediately to S is undulating rising ground, much of which has been dug away by extensive quarrying c. 50m to S. A level square area (28.5m N-S; 29.5m E-W) enclosed by a fosse (Wth 3m; D 0.5m) on the E, S and W sides. On the E side a NW-SE field boundary truncates the fosse. A natural scarp (H 0.6m), 2.5m S of the riverbank, defines the N side. A slight rise on the inner edge of the fosse at the S end of the W side may be the remnant of a bank. There is a causeway (Wth 2.5m) across the fosse on the S side, E of centre, marked by a dense growth of irises, clumps of which also occur in the interior. Another moated site (SL026-021002-) lies 20m to E and a possible rectangular enclosure (SL026-021003-) lies c. 100m to E. • SL026-021002 Moated site
  Description

  In level pasture on the S bank of the Owenmore River. Immediately to S is undulating rising ground, much of which has been dug away by extensive quarrying c. 50m to S. A rectangular area (29m N-S; 53m E-W) enclosed on the E, S, W sides by a bank (Wth 3m; int. H 0.6m; ext. H 1m) and an external fosse (Wth c. 3.8m; D 0.7m). On the N side there is a broad low stony scarp (Wth c. 4m; H 0.4m) that slopes to within 4m of the river. This, however, extends beyond the limits of the enclosure and appears to represent a natural break of slope incorporated into a field boundary. It is difficult to examine as a dense thicket of bushes and overgrowth line the river's edge. The bank is compact and sod-covered. The fosse is clearly marked by a dense growth of irises even though its outer edge is generally poorly defined. On the E side the bank has been levelled to a slight grassy rise and the fosse is infilled to a shallow depression. The entrance (Wth 2.3m), with a causeway across the fosse, is towards the W end of the S side. The interior is covered by long grass, rushes and irises. There is a circular flat-topped mound (19m E-W; 19m N-S; H 1.8m at N, 1.5m at S) with broadly sloping sides in the SW quadrant, the level top (diam. c.10m) of which has a slight depression. A somewhat similar but probably natural, flat-topped rise (c. 20m N-S; c. 10m E-W) protrudes from the gentle S-facing slope c.15m to NE. Another moated site (SL026-021001-) lies 20m to W and a possible rectangular enclosure (SL026-021003-) lies 20m to E.   Description

  In level pasture on the S bank of the Owenmore River. Immediately to S is undulating rising ground, much of which has been quarried away. A rectangular area (16m N-S; c. 24m E-W) of level ground defined by traces of a fosse on the E side, by a field boundary (Wth 1.7m; H 0.3m) with a drain (Wth 1.7m; D 0.5m) on the S side and by a field boundary on the W side. This is a circular flat-topped mound (diam. 19m; H 1.8m at N, 1.5m at S) with broadly sloping sides, except N-NE where the slope is steeper.   Description

  In undulating pasture. Indicated on the 1913 OS 6-inch map as an arc of hachured bank SSE-S and a hachured scarp W-N. Now evident as a raised circular area (int. diam. 39m) defined along the S arc by a short section of an earthen bank (Wth 1.5m; int. H 0.4m; ext. H 1.5m) and along the N arc by a scarp (H 1m). Elsewhere the interior slopes to merge with the external ground level.   Description

  In undulating pasture. The cropmark of a bank and an external fosse W-S (diam. c. 20m E-W) are visible in an aerial photograph (IASAP, 3038211). Along the SW quadrant the bank and fosse are indinted giving it an irregular appearance. This possible enclosure is not visible at ground level; a house and garden have been built in the vicinity.   Description

  In pasture, on a gentle SE-facing slope. A circular area (diam.19m) enclosed by remains of an earthen bank (Wth 2.6m; ext. H 0.75m). A possible entrance (Wth 2m) is at SE. The interior is level with the SE portion raised to compensate for the hillslope. The perimeter SW-W is clipped by a concrete shed. There is a possible standing stone (SL026-051002-) in the internal face of the bank at N. A field boundary abuts the bank at SE. This monument was levelled in July/August 2007. • SL026-051002 Standing stone
  Description

  In the interior of a rath (SL026-051001-). Described during a previous site inspection in 1992 as a prostrate stone (L 2.7m; Wth 0.5m; T 0.5m) lying against the internal bank face at N, which according to local information, had formerly stood upright in the interior of the rath (SMR (1989) file). The stone was subsequently re-erected on the bank at N where it stood to a height of 2m above ground level. The rath was levelled in July/August 2007 and the stone, now prostrate, has been incorporated into a field boundary.
