• SL014-270 Souterrain
  Description

  This souterrain, of drystone construction with lintel roofing, was recorded in 2005 during a pre-development archaeological assessment. The inspection revealed that the souterrain had been accessed previously in the modern era, and had been modified. Current access is through an opening (0.6m by 0.65m) at ground level. The opening is not original, but was the result of the collapse of two stone roofing lintels into the passage beneath. The passage (Wth 0.55m; H 0.8m), oriented NE−SW, could not be explored along its SW extent as it is blocked by a metal grate 2.7m to SW of the opening. The passage extends 2.4m to NE of the opening, where it intersects with a N−S passage (Wth 0.5m; H 0.6m). The N−S passage ends 1.65m to S of the junction; it was not possible to investigate how far it extended to N of the junction. Evidence of relatively recent modification of the souterrain included the metal grate blocking the NE−SW passage, cement coursing on the wall adjacent to the current opening, and the replacement of original stone lintels with concrete slabs along a section of the passage immediately to SW of the opening.   End-of-terrace five-bay two-storey rendered house, built c. 1885, with single-storey rubble-masonry outbuilding attached to rear at south-west corner. Pitched slate roof, clay ridge tiles, brick chimneystack to west gable, unpainted smooth-rendered corbelled chimneystack to east gable, uPVC rainwater goods. Unpainted smooth-rendered ruled-and-lined walls. Square-headed window openings, painted stone sills, painted timber two-over-two sash windows, replacement casement windows c. 1980 to rear. Square-headed door opening, double-flight of rendered steps and wrought-iron railing, painted timber vertically-sheeted door with original brass ironmongery. Street fronted building at junction of John Street and Adelaide Street with enclosed garden with rubble masonry boundary wall to rear south. Slightly set back in relation to adjoining buildings to east.

  Detached eight-bay former rendered church hall, built 1928. Asymmetric front north-facing front elevation with projecting five-bay central section, 'L'-shaped on plan with return at south-west. No longer in use. Flat roof behind castellated parapet, cast-iron rainwater goods with uPVC replacement section to east. Unpainted ruled-and-lined rendered walls, straight channelled quoins, moulded cornice and architrave below parapet. Square-headed window openings, unpainted masonry sills, uPVC windows c. 1980, windows to central section with metal mesh grilles. Round-headed door opening, rendered hood-moulding over recessed doorway, hardwood vertically-sheeted double doors. Date plaque above door reads 'ST. JOHN'S CHURCH HALL AD 1928'. Doorway accessed by concrete steps from John Street. Sited on rising ground, unpainted smooth-rendered boundary retaining wall topped with wrought-iron railings to John Street, castellated rubble stone boundary wall to east with pass gate giving to Church of Ireland Cathedral.

  Description

  Detached multi-bay stone church, originally built c.1730 by Sir Roger Jones to designs by Richard Castle. Original design consisted of cruciform plan with chamfered corners between nave and transepts, polygonal chancel to east end, square three-stage tower to west end, round-headed windows, plain corbelled eaves. Substantially remodelled 1812 in the gothic style. Single-bay gable-fronted chancel, vestrys, two-stage castellated towers engaged with north and south transepts, all added c. 1883. Pitched slate roofs reslated c. 2000, lead-lined valley and parapet gutters, lead hips and ridges, lead-covered flat roof diamond-shaped on plan over nave, square limestone chimneystack with tall yellow clay pot, uPVC downpipes. Uncoursed rubble limestone walls, limestone strings, copings, corbels and roof parapet castellations. Paired multi-paned intersecting tracery to nave and chancel, hood-mouldings, limestone block-and-start surrounds, flush sills. Curvilinear tracery leaded light east window to chancel. Square-headed window openings to north and south towers with hood-mouldings, block-and-start surrounds, flush sills, multiple-paned paired timber lancet windows. Round-headed window openings to bell-tower, fixed multiple-paned painted timber windows to lowest stage, timber louvres to top stage. Leaded light commemorative windows. Semi-circular-headed door opening to bell tower, moulded stone archivolt and keystone, hardwood six-panel double doors, bisected hardwood overlight. Interior with panelled hardwood-fronted balconys, box pews, painted plaster dome-vaulted ceiling over nave, painted plaster walls, memorial windows. On elevated site, set in graveyard with grave markers from eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, bounded by crenellated rubble-stone wall, wrought-iron gates from John Street.

  Terraced two-bay two-storey rendered house, built c. 1900, with dormer attic and timber shopfront. One of a row of similar properties. Now solely in residential use. Pitched artificial slate roof c. 2000, brick chimneystack, gabled dormer with painted timber barges carried on moulded brackets, moulded cast-iron rainwater goods. Unpainted smooth-rendered walling to first floor, painted render to ground floor. Square-headed window openings with unpainted channelled smooth render surrounds to first floor, painted masonry sills, painted timber one-over-one sash windows to first floor and attic. Centrally-located square-headed window opening to ground floor, painted timber fixed light shop display window, blank painted timber fascia board over. Square-headed door openings to east and west, plain overlights, painted timber four panel doors. Street-fronted.

  Corner-sited end-of-terrace one-bay three-storey rendered house with shopfront, built c. 1900. Pitched tile roof, red brick chimneystack, cast-iron gutters. Square-headed window openings, painted stone sills, painted timber two-over-two sash windows. Painted timber shop front, simple gold leaf lettered frieze with cornice over supported on slender fluted pilasters flanking offset painted timber double one-panel doors with plain fanlight to east, five external painted timber shutters to shop display window to west. Pitched artificial slate roof, red brick chimneystack, moulded cast-iron rainwater goods on stone corbelled eaves. Coursed ashlar limestone walling, flush sandstone broken stringcourses and quoins. Square-headed window openings, shouldered stone surrounds with chamfered reveals and moulded heads, corbelled sandstone sills, uPVC casement windows c. 1980. Pubfront with painted fascia board with individual gold lettering, square-headed window openings, uPVC windows flanked by painted plain pilasters, painted panels below windows, painted stone plinth. Square-headed door opening to west with flanking painted timber pilasters, painted-timber half-glazed double doors. Street fronted with exposed gables to both sides.

Pitched slate roof, clay ridge tiles, ashlar limestone verges with corbelled and pedimented springers, cast-iron gutters on corbelled eaves course. Coursed squared rubble limestone walls with cut-limestone dressings. Pointed-arched window openings with cut-limestone surrounds, perpendicular tracery, and leaded stained glass lights. Triple pointed-arch chancel screen on polished granite clustered columns. Mosaic tiled walls with arcaded marble altar.

Flat roof with mono-pitched roof to sanctuary. Purpose-made pink calcium silicate brick walls with stained horizontally-sheeted timber friezes and patent sheet metal coping. Square-headed window openings with fixed-pane fittings. Abstract pointed-arch open porch with insitu concrete arch leading to inset hardwood double doors. Interior with exposed steel beam trussed roof. Street fronted.
