- SL027-082 Ringfort - rath
Description
In rough grazing, on the summit of a N-S ridge. A raised circular area (diam. c. 30m) enclosed by an earthen bank (Wth 6m; int. H 1.2m; ext. H 1.5m) which is truncated by a field boundary SSE-SSW. A possible entrance (Wth 2m) is at SSW. An external fosse (Wth 4m; D 0.6m) is evident all round but is encroached upon by a forest plantation SSE-SSW. An E-W field boundary crosses the N half of the interior. The perimeter of the rath is partially overgrown with gorse. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Sligo' compiled by Ursula Egan, Elizabeth Byrne, Mary Sleeman with Sheila Ronan and Connie Murphy (Dublin Stationery Office, 2005). Date of upload: 18 January 2008
- SL027-083 Hut site
Description
In a forest plantation, at the top of a hill. The hut had been inspected in 1982, when the surrounding area had been deep ploughed for tree planting. It was then described as a circular area (diam. 8.5m) enclosed by an earthen bank (Wth 0.8m at top, 1.5m at base; H 1m) with a possible entrance (Wth 2m) at E; some stones were noted in the base of the bank (SMR (1989) file). This is a National Monument (no 10070) in state ownership. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Sligo' compiled by Ursula Egan, Elizabeth Byrne, Mary Sleeman with Sheila Ronan and Connie Murphy (Dublin Stationery Office, 2005). Date of revised upload: 1 October 2019
- SL027-099 Ringfort - rath
Description
In a young coniferous plantation, on a level area just below the summit of a ridge. A raised circular area (diam. 29m) enclosed by an earthen bank and a possible external fosse. The bank (Wth 3.5m; int. H 0.8m; ext. H 1m) is generally low internally. The entrance (Wth 3m) is at E, infilled with stones. There is a gap (Wth 2m) in the bank at NE. A band of darker vegetation (Wth 3m) surrounding the bank probably indicates a silted-up external fosse. A field boundary truncates the line of the fosse at NW.
- SL027-100 Enclosure
Description
On the E-facing slope of a ridge. A raised D-shaped area (dims. c. 20m N-S) defined by a scarp (H 0.7m) W-E and on the straight S side (L c. 25m E-W) by a field boundary. Indicated on the 1838 OS 6-inch map as a pentagonal enclosure with linear sides, the longest being the southern. No visible remains of the enclosure on the S side of the field boundary.
