• SL026-026001 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  In pasture, on a low flat-topped ridge with broadly sloping sides, steepest on the W side, and bordered W-E by low-lying wet ground and SE-S by a gently rising ridge of higher ground. An arc of scarp (L 70m; Wth slope 1.7m; H 0.5m) S-NNW coincides with the natural break of slope at the top of the ridge. At the base of the scarp there is a terrace (Wth 4.5m) from which the ground falls in a broad slope (Wth slope 5m; H 0.95m) to the base of the ridge. This is probably the remains of a large oval rath, though no evidence of an enclosing element survives N-SE. A NE-SW field boundary crosses the probable S limits of the rath. There is a souterrain (SL026-026002-) in the S half of the interior. This rath is probably that described by O'Rorke (1878, 241) as 'a large rath or fort…oblong being 96 yards [87.78m] in length and 72 [65.84m] in breadth'. There is a possible fulacht fia (SL026-026005-) immediately to W. • SL026-026002 Souterrain
  Description

  In the S half of a rath (SL026-026001-), close to the scarp of the rath at S. A low roughly circular rise (14m N-S; 13m E-W), marked by long grass and brambles, from which loose stones protrude, especially on the E side. Within the S edge of the rise is a collapsed roofless souterrain passage (L 4m N-S, Wth 1m; D 1m), choked with brambles. At the N end is an in situ lintel covering a low opening (H 0.3m) to a drystone-built passage which extends to the N. Roughly 10m to N, protruding from the ground, are two further in situ lintels, 1.3m apart. • SL026-026003 Ritual site - holy well
  Description

  Indicated on the 1913 OS 6-inch map at the S end of a rath (SL026-026001-). No remains of the well were positively identified though at the S terminal of the scarp of the rath, a large slab is visible in the scarp face and at the base of the scarp the ground is wet and boggy. This may be the remains of the well. In 1836 it was recorded that the 'patron day' of the parish is 1st of February, St Brigid's Day (OSL, 375). A penitential cairn (SL026-026004-) recorded by O'Rorke (1878, 241) in the immediate vicinity was not located.   Description

  In low-lying pasture, at the base of a slope on the W side of a low ridge on which a rath (SL026-026001-) is located. A barely discernible sod-covered rise (c. 7m N-S; 8m E-W) containing heat-shattered stones in a charcoal-rich soil. • SL026-062 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  In level elevated pasture, with a fall of ground towards a stream c. 150m to S. A low subcircular platform (21.6m E-W; 18.5m N-S to field fence) defined NNE-NW by a scarp with a slight internal lip. An E-W field boundary truncates the N edge of the rath. The scarp (H 0.4m) is very low NE-SE and partially incorporated into a N-S field boundary. It is higher (H 1.3m at S; 0.9m at NW) and better preserved SSE-NW, retaining a slight internal lip in places to S and W. The interior is level with a very slight rise at NW. A low linear rise (Wth 0.8m) on a N-S axis crosses the interior close to the scarp at W, possibly an old field division or perhaps remains of cultivation ridges. A farm track skirts the perimeter SE-SSW. Another rath (SL026-063----) lies c. 100m to E. • SL026-063 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  In elevated pasture; the ground slopes gently down towards a stream c. 150m to S. A raised circular area (34m N-S; 32m E-W) defined by an earthen bank (Wth 6m; int. H 0.4m; ext. H 2.6m) with an external fosse (Wth c. 5m; D 0.8m). The bank has a high, well-defined external face but a low, slumped internal rim and is best defined N-SE where much stone protrudes from the sod on the internal face. The fosse is clearly visible SSW-NW as a broad flat-bottomed shallow depression but is infilled elsewhere. A farm track to N, an area of surface disturbance and overgrowth to E, and a small plantation of conifers at SE impinge on the line of the infilled fosse. The interior slopes down gently to S. The entrance (Wth 3m) is at SSE with a possible ramp or causeway across the fosse. The perimeter is ringed with hawthorn bushes. There is a farmyard immediately to E. Another rath (SL026-062----) lies c. 100m to W.   Description

  In pasture. A small circular enclosure is visible in an aerial photograph (OSAP, 6 3985-6); the interior of the enclosure is evident in the photograph as a dark-coloured area and the enclosing element as a lighter-coloured band of grass.
