  In level pasture, adjacent to a lane. A raised circular area (diam. c. 37m) enclosed by a stone wall (Wth 2.2m; int. H c. 0.4m; ext. H c. 0.6m) of dump construction faced with large limestone blocks and topped by a modern stone wall. The grassy interior is heavily poached by cattle. The perimeter is overgrown with bushes. A lane skirts the SW arc.   Description

  On gently rolling pasture. A SW-facing gallery (L 7m; max. Wth 2m) stands in a diamond-shaped mound (11.5m NE-SW; 9m NW-SE; max. H 1m). The more northerly side of the gallery is intact and formed of seven orthostats. Adjoining the western of these seven stones is a facade-stone. Eight stones are in position on the opposite side of the gallery, three to the W of a gap and five to the E. A stone divides the gallery entrance into two parts. There are two partly buried slabs and a displaced stone in the rear half of the gallery.   Description

  Two terraced (three-bay to south, four-bay to north) two-storey rendered former houses, built c. 1860, now part of detached multiple-bay two-storey civic centre, built 2003. Extensive new-build extension to north and west. Original properties with pitched slate roof, clay ridge tiles, unpainted smooth-rendered flat-capped chimneystack to east gable, half-round cast-iron rainwater goods, painted roughcast walls, square-headed window openings, painted masonry sills, varnished one-over-one timber sash windows, square-headed door openings and varnished vertically-sheeted timber doors. New civic centre with flat roofs,varoius walling treatments including standing-seam vertically-jointed zinc-clad walling, painted smooth-rendered walling and coursed rubble stone walling. Square-headed window openings with planar glazing; full-height square-headed recessed formal entrance to north of terraced properties. Street fronted, gateways to rear to north and south.

  Description

  Attached two-bay two-storey funeral home, c.1925, on a rectangular plan. Now disused. Roof not visible behind parapet with rendered chimney stacks having moulded rendered cornice capping. Rendered walls with rusticated rendered piers to ends supporting moulded rendered cornice below parapet. Square-headed window opening (north) with concrete sill, and rendered surround framing timber boarded shutters. Square-headed opening (south) with concealed dressings framing timber boarded double doors. Square-headed window openings (first floor) with concrete sills, and rendered surrounds framing two-over-two timber sash windows. Street fronted with concrete brick cobbled footpath to front.

• Saint George's Church (Achonry), church/chapel, 1820–1840 · Regional interest
  Description

  Detached three-bay limestone church, built c. 1830. Two stage crenellated tower to west end, square on plan broached at belfry level to polygon. Small rectangular chancel to east end with flat-roofed vestry c. 1900 to north side. Pitched slate roofs to nave and chancel, plain clay ridge tiles, extruded profiled aluminium gutters on eaves corbel course. Flat roof to tower. Coursed squared-and-snecked rubble stone walling, ashlar quoins, corbelled parapet to tower, blank ashlar shield plaque above door opening in tower. Pointed-arch window openings, tooled ashlar splayed surrounds, flush splayed sills, paired Y-tracery painted timber lancets sub-divided into small rectangular panes surmounted by diamond-paned panels. Pointed-arch belfry openings, tooled ashlar splayed surrounds, flush splayed sills, painted timber louvres. Pointed arch door openings, tooled ashlar splayed surrounds, painted vertically-sheeted timber double doors with fixed panel over c. 1995, stone steps. Set in grassed graveyard, stone gravestones, bitmac paths, rubble stone boundary walls to north, east and south, painted smooth-rendered boundary wall with saddle-backed stone copings to road (west), entrance gates on ashlar piers to north-west.

  Detached multi-bay two-storey rendered house, built c. 1910. T-plan, gabled breakfront with projecting two-storey canted bay to east of north (front) elevation, two-storey lean-to to rear wrapping around south and west sides of gabled return, single-storey lean-to extension to west, lean-to porch in angle between breakfront and east elevation. Pitched artificial slate roofs, hipped to bay, clay ridge tiles, yellow brick corbelled chimneystacks, concrete verge cappings, uPVC rainwater rainwater goods. Painted roughcast walling; chamfered smooth-rendered plinth, quoins, sill and head strings; painted brick eaves dentil course to bay window. Square-headed window openings, smooth-rendered reveals, painted concrete sills, uPVC casement windows c. 1980. Square-headed entrance door opening, stained glass leaded overlight, hardwood half-glazed panelled door c. 1980. Fronts to garden, tree-lined avenue from road to north.

  Corner-sited attached three-bay three-storey rendered house, built c. 1890, former ground floor shop converted to residential use c. 1995. Pitched artificial slate roof hipped at corner, clay ridge tiles, painted smooth-rendered corbelled chimneystacks, profiled extruded aluminium gutters c.1990 on painted timber fascias. Ground floor painted smooth-rendered walling with V-jointed rustication, smooth-rendered fascia with moulded cornice over to former shopfront to west elevation returning to north. Upper floors pebble-dashed walling, smooth-rendered straight quoins. Square-headed window openings, painted concrete sills, lugged and kneed rendered surrounds with decorative flourish to head, uPVC casement windows. Square-headed entrance door openings, uPVC double doors, plain-glazed overlights. Street fronted to north and west sides, lower two-storey property to south.

  Corner-sited, attached multi-bay two-storey rendered bank, built c. 1910. Splayed corner entrance, two-bay west elevation with lower two-bay extension c. 1970, six-bay north elevation. Pitched slate roof hipped at corner, clay ridge tiles, painted smooth-rendered corbelled chimneystack, moulded cast-iron gutters on eaves corbel course. Painted smooth-rendered walling, smooth-rendered channel-jointed quoins. Square-headed window openings, painted masonry sills, moulded architraves with roundels at corners of most windows, round-headed beaded pilasters on plinth blocks flanking windows to banking hall, painted one-over-one timber sash windows, some paired. Square-headed door opening, round-headed beaded moulded pilasters on plinth blocks flanking entrance, plain frieze over, plain-glazed overlight, painted timber double doors each with five raised-and-fielded panels. Moulded render sign fascia wrapping around corner and extending over banking hall windows, plain frieze, moulded cornice raised to form segmental pediment over entrance, terminating in paired consoles capped by triangular miniature pediments. Street fronted on incline, lower two-storey building to east, high smooth-rendered boundary wall to south.

  Description

  Detached eleven-bay two-storey rendered convent with dormered attic, built c. 1905, main block remains in use as convent while school block derelict. Irregular plan form with contiguous seven-bay three-storey school block extension c. 1950 to east and various flat roof extensions c. 1965 to rear (north). Symmetrical elevation to main block with projecting gabled central bay and end bays. Mansard slate roof to main block, pitched slate roofs to wings, plain red clay ridge tiles, gabled dormers faced in timber with lead-clad cheeks, painted timber decorative barges to dormers and gables, moulded decorative cast-iron gutters. Unpainted roughcast walling, moulded plinth, corbelled moulded brick eaves course, statue niche at first floor over entrance. Pointed-arch window openings, painted smooth-rendered chamfered surrounds, painted masonry sills, painted one-over-one timber sash windows. Pointed arch entrance door opening with flanking side lights, stopped hood moulding over, painted timber door with six panels, plain-glazed overlight, limestone steps. Range of less architecturally significant buildings in grounds. Set on elevated site opposite church, painted smooth-rendered boundary wall with segmental dressed limestone coping to roadside, square painted smooth-rendered gate piers, decorative wrought-iron gates, tree-lined avenue on central axis with main building.

  Detached three-bay two-storey rendered parochial house, built c. 1910. Rectangular on plan, square single-storey porch projecting from north elevation, single-storey canted bay projecting from west elevation. Hipped slate roofs to house and porch, plain clay hip and ridge tiles, painted smooth-rendered corbelled chimneystack, profiled extruded aluminium gutters on paired painted profiled timber corbels carrying projecting eaves, uPVC downpipes. Lead flat roof behind parapet to bay window. Painted smooth-rendered ruled-and-lined walling, painted plinth, moulded strings at window head height to porch and bay, moulded cornice below parapet with deep coping to bay. Square-headed window openings, painted masonry sills, uPVC casement windows c. 1990. Square-headed entrance door opening, pole-moulded stop-chamfered rendered surround, varnished hardwood door with five panels. Two-storey painted rubble stone outbuilding to south, hipped slate roof, brick dressings to openings, single-storey section to east. Approached by curving bitmac driveway from road to north, lawn to west of driveway, mature trees to east, painted smooth-rendered boundary wall to road, rock-faced margined ashlar limestone copings, surmounted by decorative cast-iron post and chain fence, painted smooth-rendered gate piers with chamfered plinths, frieze and corniced pyramidal caps, gates missing, pathway leading to church to west.

  Description

  Detached stone Catholic church, built c. 1932. Four-bay nave, single-bay east and west transepts, gabled porches project from north side of east transept and west side of west transept, canted chancel to south, single-storey vestry to south-east, square two-stage belfry tower to north-west with octagonal spire set behind parapet. Pitched slate roofs, hipped to chancel, crested clay ridge tiles, coursed rock-faced ashlar flat-capped chimneystack to vestry, ashlar verge copings to gables, carved crosses to apexes of gables to main roofs, iron crosses to porch gables and spire, moulded cast-iron gutters on stone corbels, cast-iron downpipes. Simple Y-tracery window to north entrance front, stained glass leaded lights. Tall pointed-arch openings to belfry, splayed dressings and Y-tracery, square transoms. Pointed-arched door openings, block-stopped hood mouldings, splayed ashlar reveals (stepped to main entrance), wood-grained vertically-sheeted timber double doors, stone panel over door in base of tower. Timber boarded floors below pews, carpeted aisles, marble steps to altar remodelled c. 1990, painted plaster walls with splayed reveals to openings, paired pointed-arch openings to chancels each with central column, hammer beam truss roof with twisted iron tie rods, soffit of pitched ceiling between trusses sub-divided into square panels, ribbed fan-vaulted ceiling to chancel, rectangular timber porch to entrance front with leaded lights set below timber gallery containing small pipe organ to north side and timber panelled gallery front, leaded light windows in chancel dated 1910 and attributed to 'Watson Co., Youghal'. Toilet/boiler house building c. 1990 to north-east, lawns, bitmac paths, painted smooth-rendered boundary wall to road, rock-faced margined ashlar limestone copings, surmounted by decorative cast-iron post and chain fence, rock-faced ashlar gate piers with rock-faced caps, gates missing, path to parochial house to east.

  Detached five-bay two-storey rendered bank, built c. 1910. L-plan, three-bay breakfront to east side with forward-projecting porch doorcase to extreme east. Hipped slate roof, clay ridge and hip tiles, painted smooth-rendered chimneystacks, moulded cast-iron gutters embellished with lion's head motifs on moulded render eaves corbel course. Painted smooth-rendered walling, moulded string courses at first floor and window head levels, moulded plinth. Square-headed window openings, painted concrete sills, decorative moulded heads and plain bands to reveals (kneed to breakfront) to first floor, painted two-over-two timber sash windows except two painted timber casement windows to banking hall, ground floor window to west modified to accept cash dispenser. Painted smooth-rendered plain frieze over ground floor windows and door with individually-lettered sign. Square-headed entrance door opening in painted smooth-render, doorcase with flanking pilasters with moulded caps, plain frieze containing bank logo, moulded cornice, plain-glazed overlight, hardwood door with six raised-and-fielded panels c. 1970. Two steps from footpath, small paved area to front bounded by ornate cast-iron railings, painted smooth-rendered gate piers with pyramidal copings to west, painted sheet-metal gates c. 1995, alleyways to east and west sides, taller three-storey building to west, lower two-storey building to east.

  Description

  Detached six-bay three-storey rendered shop, built c. 1870, formerly with dwelling over. Shopfront to full width of ground floor, two-storey return to east, three-storey return to west. Pitched slate roof, clay ridge tiles, brick corbelled chimneystacks, concrete verges to gables, moulded cast-iron gutters on moulded corbels, rectangular cast-iron downpipes. Painted smooth-rendered walling, raised quoins. Square-headed window openings, painted stone sills, moulded architraves to second floor, first floor window aedicules with panelled pilasters, plain friezes and moulded dentilled cornices, painted one-over-one timber sash windows. Shopfront with smooth-rendered fascia with raised lettering under moulded cornice, square-headed display windows flanked by paired pilasters with stop-mouldings, simple capitals and bases to either side of openings. Square-headed shop door opening set between paired pilasters to centre, painted timber glazed double doors, plain-glazed overlight. Round-headed double-recessed door opening leading to ground floor hall and dwelling on upper floors, plain-glazed fanlight, painted timber door with six raised-and-fielded panels and central bead. Street fronted, lower two-storey bank to east, gateway leading to yard and rubble stone boundary wall to west.

  Detached single-bay two-storey stone water tower, built c. 1860, now disused. Cast-iron water tank with moulded panels and rounded corners on corbelled brick eaves. Coursed rubble limestone walling, raised brick quoins. Segmental-headed window opening, brick dressings and triple-course arch, window missing. Round-headed door opening, brick dressings and triple-course arch, door missing. Located at north end of former platform, disused railway line to east.
