Description
In garden and driveway to E of two-storey house. Remains of sub-circular area (dims. 46m N-S; 52m E-W) defined by earthen scarp (Wth 2m; H 0.8m) NW-E-SW, wall SW-W, two-storey house to W and stone wall and entrance W-NW. Scarp (Wth 1.1m; H 1.15m) retained by wall (T 0.15m; H 0.7m) of rubble stone and mortar intermittent NW-E and continuous E-S. Exterior fosse (Wth 2.9m; D 0.6m) NW-E-SW is choked with overgrowth and dead wood SSE-SW. - TS070-054 Ringfort - rath
Description
In pasture, on a gentle E-facing slope. Oval area (dims. 28m N-S; 36m E-W) defined by wide earthen bank (Wth 7.2m; int. H 0.75m; ext. H 2.2m), eroded by cattle W-N and reduced to scarp (Wth 5m; H 2m) c. ENE-E, leaving scarp. Intervening fosse (Wth 7.45m; D 0.65m) is well formed. Outer bank (Wth 5.85m; int. H 1.85m; ext H 1.2m) flat-topped SSE-WSW where it tapers off. Outer bank continues intermittently ENE-E and SE-SSE. Causewayed entrance through interior (Wth 4m) and exterior (Wth 9m) banks at SSE. Description
In pasture, on a gentle S-facing slope. Flat-topped, circular area (dims. 16m N-S; 18m E-W) defined by gentle scarp (Wth 4m; H 0.25m) best preserved to SE-NE. Remains of external fosse (Wth 14m at S and Wth 17m at N; D 0.05m at S and Wth 1m at N). Interior slopes down gently to S with prevalent slope and is incorporated into rest of field as pasture. Linear depression (long-axis c. N-S) to E and similar depression (long-axis c. E-W) to NW represent levelled field boundaries. Depicted on 1840 OS six-inch map as oval enclosure. Description
In level pasture in NW corner of field. Remains of sub-circular area (dims. 24m N-S; 28m E-W) defined by scarp (Wth 2.7m; H 1.7m) SW-N-ENE and levelled ENE-SW. External fosse (basal Wth 1.4m; overall Wth 5.6m; D 0.75m) SW-N-ENE. Field fence traverses interior between the surviving terminals of monument at SW and ENE: two-thirds within is under long grass and remaining one-third is incorporated into rest of field as pasture. Description
In pasture, on a gentle E-facing slope. Circular area (dims. 26m N-S; 27m E-W) defined by flat-topped (Wth 1.2m) earthen bank (overall Wth 9m; int. H 1.0m; ext. H 2.1m). Bank breached (Wth 4.5m) at N and at SE (Wth 3m). Intervening fosse (basal Wth 2m; overall Wth 7.2m; D 0.9m) E-W is waterlogged in places E-SE and is uneven along N arc due to infilling.. Remains of outer bank (Wth 3.75m; int. H 1.4m; ext. H 0.5m) E-S-W are intermittent in places and poorly preserved. Outer bank pushed into intervening fosse W-N-E (except at NNW) and at SW where it resembles a causeway. Interior slopes down gently from bank all around and is quite deep and sheltered due to increased interior bank height. Covered in long grass and nettles with briars towards eastern half. Description
In level pasture, enclosed by field boundary. Circular area (dims. 36m N-S; 34m E-W) defined by substantial flat-topped (Wth 1.0m) earthen bank (overall Wth 10.55m; int. H 1.65m; ext. H 2.05m). Causewayed entrance (Wth 5.75m) at NNW, breach (Wth 3.75m) at NE and large breach (Wth 6m) to SE. External fosse (basal Wth 1.9m; total Wth 9.15m; D 1.4m) is well preserved, although eroded by cattle at W. Earthen mound in fosse at SE is possibly material from breached bank at same. Fosse is wet and waterlogged in places along E arc due to adjoining wet patch. Interior generally level and planted with tall conifers. Thin earthen field boundary encloses monument. In level pasture. No visible surface trace of monument at ground level. Identified as circular enclosure (diam. 20m) on aerial photograph (GSI S.652/1, 16.4.1974). Not shown on 1st (1840) ed. OS 6-inch map. Circular, wet patch further to N. Enclosure (TS070-057----) is located c. 170m to SE, ringfort (TS070-056----) is c. 235m to NE and enclosure (TS070-055----) is c. 260m to NW.
