Description
Situated on the gentle NE-facing slope of a ridge in tillage. Depicted on the 1st ed. OS 6-inch map with only the E portion indicated on the subsequent 1954-5 revision. A circular site (diam. c. 36m) levelled except for the overgrown bank (Wth 2m; int. H 0.58m; ext. H 0.4) at E, which has internal stone-facing. The remainder of the site is visible as a very subtle bank. Field clearance material, earth and wood, is dumped adjacent to the bank at E. No visible fosse or entrance feature. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Tipperary. Vol. 1 - North Tipperary' compiled by Jean Farrelly and Caimin O'Brien (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2002). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 22 September 2008
- TN021-065 Enclosure
Description
Situated on a break in a S-facing slope in pastureland. An irregular-shaped enclosure (diam. 36m N-S; 35.5m E-W), poorly preserved and defined by a low bank (Wth 2.9m; int. H 0.35m; ext. H 0.36m), badly damaged by cattle along the E side and reduced to a scarp at S with a shallow, poorly defined external fosse (Wth 3.1m; ext. H 0.41). The N, W and S sides of the enclosure are straight, however, the shape is somewhat different from that depicted on the 1st ed. OS 6-inch map.
- TN021-066 Mound
Description
Situated in a flat marshy river valley. The river is nearby to the E and a fast-flowing stream runs along the base of the site in the NE quadrant. A long, low earthen mound (dims. 67m ENE-WSW; 17.7m SSE-NNW) defined by a low, broad bank (Wth 2.2m; int. H 0.23m; ext. H 2.3m), a fosse (Wth 2.5m; D 0.2m) and a possible outer bank visible at S (Wth 4.4m; ext. H 0.46m) though this may be the remains of a field boundary. The interior is heavily overgrown with scrub.
