- TN020-126 Enclosure
Description
A possible enclosure was identified by C. O'Rahilly, in the Environmental Impact Study on the Route of the Proposed Nenagh By-Pass, Northern and Southern Routes which was undertaken in July 1994. An unusual kick in the field boundary on the N side may indicate the presence of a small enclosure located inside the field. On the first edition of the OS 6-inch map the field boundary kicks out in a polygonal shape. This polygonal-shaped field boundary is clearly shown on the revised 25-inch OS map. Present remains consist of a low elevated platform (dims. 15m N-S; 18m E-W) defined by a low earth and stone bank mainly reduced to a scarp (H 0.4m) with a wide water-logged fosse (Wth 11m; D 0.4m) visible on S side of platform only. Field boundary respected the presence of this low platform and formed a polygonal shaped field boundary around the low elevated platform. A pathway is depicted running past this earthwork on the W side on the first ed. OS 6-inch map. Traces of this metalled pathway can still be seen today. - TN020-144001 Enclosure
Description
In 2000 archaeological excavation by Donald Murphy revealed evidence of a U-shaped ditch (Wth 2m; D 0.7m) belonging to a D-shaped enclosure (Bennett 2002, 318). A rotary quern and a possible rubbing stone were retrieved frrom the fill of this dicth suggesting a medieval date for the enclosure. A gap which measured 3.5m by 1.5m, evident in the north-western section of the ditch, probably functioned as an entrance. Excavation was carried out under licence No. 00E0385. A second excavated enclosure (TN020-144001) was situated nearby to the S. Compiled by: Caimin O'Brien. Date of upload: 22 September 2008
- TN020-144002 Enclosure
Description
In 2000 archaeological excavation by Donald Murphy revealed evidence of a V-shaped ditch (Wth 1.6m ; D 0.9m) of an enclosure (Bennett 2002, 318). Finds retrieved from this site include quernstone fragments, rubbing stones, medieval pottery and part of a copper-alloy thimble. This enclosure lay to the N of an excavated enclosure (TN020-144001). Excavation was carried out under licence No. 00E0385 (Bennett 2002, 318). Compiled by: Caimin O'Brien. Date of upload: 22 September 2008
- TN020-145 Fulacht fia
Description
In 2000 archaeological excavation by Donald Murphy revealed evidence of a Fulacht Fiadh which covered an area approx. 15.65m N-S x 7m. A particularly dense area of charcoal was evident within the NW quadrant measuring 5.5m x 5m. This was removed revealing nine pits/depressions which varied in shape, length and width. The largest measured 5m x 1.5m and the smallest had diameter of 0.9m. The depth varied ranging from 0.25m to 0.6m (Bennett 2002, 318). Excavation was carried out under licence No. 00E0211 (Bennett 2002, 318). Compiled by: Caimin O'Brien. Date of upload: 22 September 2008
