- TS053-045 Church
Description
In flat grassland at base of W-facing hillslope in undulating countryside with good views to N, S and W, higher ground to E, stream 115m to W of church. Wall-footings of levelled nave and chancel church (overall int. dims. 5.65m N-S; 19.5m E-W; wall T 0.8m) are visible at the N end of the rectangular graveyard (TS053-045002-) which is defined by a low earth and stone bank with a possible castle (TS053-045003-) 100m to S and watermill (TS053-045001-) 239m to SW. There are earthworks of a possible deserted settlement (TS053-045004-) to W, N and S of the church and graveyard. The OS Letters describe a poorly preserved nave (dims. 48 ft [14.6m] E-W x 19 ft 2 inches [5.8m] N-S) and chancel (dims. 18 ft [5.5m] N-S) (O'Flanagan 1930, vol. 1, 109). The church is mentioned in 1291 in the Papal Taxation as part of the possessions of Hore Abbey (Cahill 1982). In 1840 the N wall of the church was the best preserved and stood 11 ft [3.35m] high and measured three feet [0.9m] thick, built with uncoursed limestone rubble (ibid.). Described by White (1892, 13) as an upstanding church with a doorway at the E end of the S wall and the N wall partly upstanding, with no visible grave-markers visible. - TS053-045001 Graveyard
Description
In flat grassland at base of a W-facing hillslope in undulating countryside with good views to N, S and W, higher ground to E, stream 115m to W of church. Wall-footings of church (TS053-045----) visible at N end of rectangular graveyard (int. dims. 58m N-S; 34m E-W) which is defined by a low earth and stone bank (top Wth 2m; base Wth 4m; int. H 0.3m; ext. H 0.8m) which represents the grass-covered wall-footings of an original graveyard wall (wall T 0.9m). Possible castle and bawn (TS053-045002-/TS053-045003-) 100m to S and watermill (TS053-045005-) 239m to SW. Earthworks of possible deserted settlement (TS053-045004-) to W, N and S of church and graveyard. Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 26 August 2011
- TS053-045002 Castle - unclassified
Description
In flat grassland at base of a W-facing hillslope in undulating countryside with good views to N, S and W, higher ground to E, stream 115m to W of castle, church (TS053-045----) and graveyard (TS053-045001-) 50m to N. Watermill (TS053-045005-) 139m to SW. Earthworks of possible desterted settlement (TS053-045004-) to W, N and S of castle. All that survives are the grass-covered wall-footings of a possible small rectangular tower (approx. dims. 6.3m N-S; 7.4m E-W) in the centre of a possible bawn (TS053-045003-). Possible castle and bawn are attached to the S end of the graveyard wall. Dimensions and shape of wall-footings suggest that this may be the remains of a tower house with associated bawn. - TS053-045004 Settlement deserted - medieval
Description
In flat grassland at base of a W-facing hillslope in undulating countryside with good views to N, S and W, higher ground to E, stream runs N-S along side of settlement earthworks. Church and graveyard (TS053-045----/TS053-045001-), castle and bawn (TS053-045002-/TS053-045003-) and watermill (TS053-045005-) associated with adjoining earthworks. Extensive remains of low linear earthworks which appear to form several small rectangular enclosures or plots best visible to the W of the church and graveyard. No clear evidence of a hollow way or any clear house sites. Extensive remains of cultivation ridges within small fields to E of church may be contemporary with medieval settlement. These earthworks probably represent the remains fo a settlement associated with church, castle and watermill. Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 26 August 2011
