- TS070-017 House - 17th century
Description
On a SW-facing slope in undulating terrain within a horse gallops. This is indicated as an unroofed 'Old Manor Ho. (in ruins)' (dims. c. 36m N-S; c. 6m E-W) on the 1st (1840) ed. 6-inch OS map. This map also shows a small building, or angle tower, projecting from the NW angle and a wall running c. 12m westward from the SW angle. In the OS Namebooks (O'Donovan c. 1840) it is described as 'a ruin about 35 yards in length having several smaller ruins & two large houses at its western side'. By the 2nd (1903-04) ed. 6-inch OS map the house is no longer indicated. It is possible that this house dates to the 17th century as it was ruinous by 1840, and the house which possibly had succeeded it, Brook Hill house, located 40m to the W, is also described as being in ruins, though roofed, on the 1840 map. There is no visible trace of this house above ground. Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 5 December 2012
- TS070-018 Ringfort - rath
Description
In woodland and pasture. Circular area, (map dims. C. 20m) defined by extant, yet not clearly visible bank (presumed to be intervening bank reduced to scarp) NW-N-ESE. Scarp (Wth 6m; ext. H 0.65m) is levelled ESE-S-WSW. Intervening fosse (Wth 10m; D 0.1m). Outer bank (Wth 14m; int. H 0.1m; ext. H 0.5m). Drain visible in place of outer bank (WSW-W-WNW). Of the southern levelled sector, not much is discernable due to low profile. Also a possible old stream path for water run-off has existed in the area of the intervening fosse between the possible outer and intervening banks. Earthen field boundary partially covered in furze bushes truncates monument E-W. There is a deeply cut drain within to N. Also deeply cut drain to E of monument therefore there was probably a problem with water and flooding in this area in previous years which would explain the sinuous water channel visible in S-area of monument. Moated site (TS070-023----) located 160m to SE. Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 26 August 2011
- TS070-019 Ringfort - rath
Description
In rough pasture, on a steep W-facing slope. Circular area (diam. 32m) defined by earthen scarp which is low (Wth 1.25m; H 0.5m) on NE-side and high and steep (Wth 4.5m; H 2.65m) on SW-side where it is raised to compensate for hillslope. External fosse (basal Wth 1.2m; total (Wth 4.2m; D 0.55m) NE-ESE is in-filled SE-S-W-N-NE. Possible causewayed entrance (Wth 4m) at WNW is disturbed by cattle erosion. Irregular, grass covered, pile of earthen material dumped on exterior of scarp at W. Interior ground levels slope down gently (Wth 7.55m; H 1.55m) from top edge of the scarp, being gradual and not bank-like. Enclosure (TS070-021----) located 180m to SSE.
