- TS049-013 Ringfort - rath
Description
On a NW-facing slope of rising ground in the Slieveardgah hills with good views from W through N to E and higher ground to S. A stream runs downslope into outer fosse at the NE and encloses the monument from NE through N to W where it exits the fosse and runs downhill. This feature has been noted at other ringforts in the Slieveardagh hills. Monument very overgrown and covered in mature trees and thorn bushes making detailed examination impossible. Only able to examine bank and outer fosse from NE to E elsewhere the ringfort is impenetrable. Monument consists of a raised circular platform (approx. diam. 45m N-S) enclosed by an earth and stone bank (top Wth 1.6m; base Wth 5m; int. H 0.2m ext. H 1-1.5m) and wet outer fosse (base Wth 2m ; top Wth 4m; ext. D 0.4m), possible entrance gap (Wth 5m) at SE. Cattle gap (Wth 1.5m) in bank at NE. No other features visible. Impossible to take diameter measurements due to the thick cover of vegetation on the ringfort. Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 26 August 2011
- TS049-014001 Cairn - unclassified
Description
On top of Bregaun hill in upland region with panoramic views in all directions. No clear remains visible of any cairn on top of Bregaun hill which has a cross erected on the summit of the hill in 1950. Small whitethorn bush located beside the cross, immediately to the NE which may have been located on a low or levelled cairn as there is evidence for grass covered loosely piled stones which may be the remains of a levelled cairn. No other features visible, no definite shape or edge to the grass-covered stones. No evidence of any cairn with burial (TS049-014002-) which was referred to in the Kilkenny journal of 20 July 1918 which refers to 'Excavations on Brengaun'. Cairn in grassland at time of inspection with railing erected around Stone cross. The construction of the cross in the 1950s may have resulted in the partial levelling of any cairn on this hill.
