• TS049-026 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  On a SE-facing slope of rising grassland with good panoramic views from E through S to W in upland region. Nearby moated site (TS049-027----) 400m to the S. Slightly raised circular area (diam. 41m N-S; 38m E-W) enclosed by an earthen bank (top Wth 1.5m; base Wth 4m; int. H 0.3m; ext. H 1m) and external fosse (base W) both of which are only visible from SW through W to NW elsewhere the bank has been reduced to a scarp (H 0.2-0.7m) and the fosse has been filled in. • TS049-027 Moated site
  Description

  Square-shaped moated site (dims. 64m N-S; 44m E-W) defined by a scarp (H 1.2m) and external waterlogged outer fosse (Top Wth 4m; ext. D 0.3m) which possible fish-pond (TS049-027001-) in the N corner. This moated site with internal division (possible fish-pond) is depicted on the 1840 ed. OS 6-inch map. The interior of the moated site is much drier than that of the internal enclosure, which with its unsual arrangements of banks and fosses would appear to keep water within this smaller internal enclosure. According to local knowledge this enclosure has several springs which provide a wet interior all year around which would be suitable for a fish-pond. • TS049-027001 Fish-pond
  Description

  On a SE-facing slope of rising grassland on wet land with good views to S and E in upland region. Nearby ringfort (TS049-026----) 400m to the N. Possible fish-pond located in N corner of a moated site (TS049-027----). Possible fish-pond consists of a square-shaped area (int. dims. 22m N-S; 30m E-W) enclosed by an flat-topped earthen bank (top Wth 1.5m; base Wth 3m; int. H 0.15m; ext. H 0.1-1m) and waterlogged outer fosse (base Wth 2.5m; top Wth 4; ext. D 0.5m) both of which are well preserved along the NE and NW sides, elsewhere the bank has been incorporated into a field boundary and the fosse has been partially filled in. No entrance feature visible. The interior is wet especially along its S side or on the downslope. Nearby stream runs past the fish-pond from SW to S of the moated site. The interior of the moated site is much drier than that of the internal enclosure, which with its unsual arrangements of banks and fosses would appear to keep water within this smaller internal enclosure. According to local knowledge this enclosure has several springs which provide a wet interior all year around which would be suitable for a fish-pond.
