- TN023-025 Ringfort - rath
Description
Situated on a natural hillock sloping gradually to the S with a stream c. 70m to the SW and a ringfort (TN023-026) visible c. 80m to the E. A circular area (31.3m N-S) enclosed by an earth and stone bank (Wth 2.5m; int. H 0.88m; ext. H 1.2-1.62m), a fosse (Wth 2.5m; D 0.3m) and an outer bank (Wth 6.5m; ext. H 0.4m). The outer bank has been formed by truncating the natural edge of the hillock. The interior is quite undulating with a fairly pronounced slope to the S. A gap at S (Wth 7.2m) appears to have been widened to allow tractor access. A slight suggestion of a ramp or causeway (Wth c. 4.5m) leads up to this gap which may be original. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Tipperary. Vol. 1 - North Tipperary' compiled by Jean Farrelly and Caimin O'Brien (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2002). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 22 September 2008
- TN023-026 Ringfort - rath
Description
Situated in very prominent position on top of a hillock, in undulating terrain under pasture with a ringfort (TN023-025) visible c. 80m to the W. A circular area (diam. 28m N-S; 28.8m E-W) defined by a scarp (H 0.86-1.86m) with a slight suggestion of an outer fosse (Wth 1.9m; D 0.4m) at W only and a possible causewayed entrance (Wth 3.5m) at SW. The site is unusual in its defensive positon and lack of enclosing bank.
