- TS061-112 Ringfort - rath
Description
In improved pasture, on an E-facing slope. Circular area (diam. 35m) defined by earthen bank (overall Wth 7.65m; Wth at top 1.7m; int. H 0.95m; ext. H 2.5m), except where reduced to scarp at NE. Gap (overall Wth 4m; basal Wth 2m) in bank and possible causeway over fosse at NE may represent an entrance. Fosse (overall Wth 5.75m; basal Wth 1.75m; D 0.95m) has been modified at ESE, where redug and extended outwards to form pond. Outer edge of fosse is truncated by field boundary NNE-ENE and disturbed by upcast from excavated pond at ENE. Interior is generally level and is accessible around perimeter, but overgrown with vegetation within centre. Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 26 August 2011
- TS061-114001 Concentric enclosure
Description
In improved pasture, on an ENE-facing slope. Oval area (dims. 105m E-W; 75m N-S) defined by remains of linear bank (overall Wth 8.25m; Wth at top 4.25m; int. H 0.1m; ext. H 0.16m; L 42m) along N-side and reduced to linear scarp (Wth 2.3m; H 0.6m; L 30m) at N-end, E-side. Gap (Wth 13m) at E. E-scarp (c. 30m) curves inwards at SE, where it appears to be truncated by field boundary. Scarp (Wth 1m; H 0.14m); intervening fosse (basal Wth 1.2m; overall Wth 3.05m; Dth 0.14m); levelled bank (Wth at top 2.8m; total Wth 4.4m; int. H 0.2m; ext. H 0.15m and outer fosse (basal Wth 2m; overall Wth 3.3m; Dth 0.15m) SSW-SW. Part of enclosing elements may be incorporated into field boundary SW-NW. A berm (Wth 20-30m) separates the outer enclosure form the inner circular enclosure (diam. c. 40m) which is situated off-centre to SW. It is defined by bank (overall Wth 7.4m; Wth at top 2m; int. H 0.2m; ext. H 2.35m). Outlet channel excavated through bank on downslope at E to allow water run-off into fosse. Fosse (overall Wth 7.8m; basal Wth 3.1m; D 1.15m) is waterlogged for most part and it has been excavated outwards at E to form pond. Interior is densely overgrown for most part and this has extended around top of bank. The outer bank of the concentric enclosure appears to be cut by an enclosure (TS061-114002-) to S, whilst another enclosure (TS061-114003-) appears to be adjoining to S.
