Description
On a gradual S-facing slope, in gently undulating terrain, under tillage. There is no visible trace of monument at ground level. The monument is outlined as a sub-square enclosure on 1st (1840) ed. OS 6-inch map (dims. c. 26.5m N-S; c. 29.5m E-W) but is not shown on 2nd (1904) ed. The field boundaries to the W and S have been removed. Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 26 August 2011
- TS077-075 Ringfort - rath
Description
On quite a steep S-facing slope in undulating pasture. The ground at base of hill is quite marshy. Enclosure (TS077-076----) formerly visible c. 120m to SW. Circular area (diam. 49m N-S; 48m E-W) defined by low scarp (H 0.68m) and shallow outer fosse, widest in S quadrant (Wth 1.4-5.2m; D 0.12m). The interior slopes quite steeply to S, with the natural slope. Field boundary immediately S of the ringfort has been removed. Limited quarrying into scarp in the S quadrant. Description
In a valley at base of a S-facing slope in very marshy pasture, particularly immediately E of enclosure. Area S of monument has been reclaimed. Ringfort (TS077-075----) visible to NE. Enclosure has been levelled but is still discernible as a raised, roughly circular area (diam. 48.7m N-S; c. 44.6m E-W) defined by a low, very gradual scarp (H 0.18-0.33m), particularly visible in SW quadrant. Evidence of a fosse in the N quadrant (Wth 2.5m; D 0.55m above ext.). The field boundary immediately S of enclosure has been removed. Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 26 August 2011
- TS077-079 Bullaun stone
Description
In factory car park, c. 1km to N of Clonmel. A triangular bullaun stone (L 3m to N; L 2.9m to SE; L 2.2m to SW) (max. H 0.7m) of limestone rock outcrop with natural fissures. It is depicted on the 2nd (1906) ed. OS 6-inch map as a 'Holy Well'. The main water-filled depression is circular (diam. 0.3m; D 0.5m) and occurs on the elevated S corner with another small, circular depression (diam. 0.15m; D 0.03m) on highest point, adjacent to the N. Four other circular depressions (diam. 0.17m; D 0.1m and diam. 0.12m; D 0.025m at W and dims. 0.15m N-S; 0.13m E-W; D 0.05m and diam. 0.06m; D 0.02m at E) are aligned c. E-W, along the lower portions of the gently sloping N side of the outcrop. The bullaun stone is incorporated into a landscaped area defined by a low, modern stone wall. Description
Detached four-bay single-storey vernacular house, built c. 1800, with single-bay lean-to to west and to rear. Hipped thatched roof with rendered chimneystacks. Pitched corrugated-iron roofs to extensions. Battered painted roughcast rendered walls. Square-headed openings with one-over-one pane timber sliding sash windows having rendered surrounds. Entrance comprising windbreak with square-headed replacement timber door. Multiple-bay single-storey outbuilding to south-west having pitched corrugated asbestos roof. Painted roughcast rendered piers with painted carved caps and double-leaf wrought-iron gates.
