• TS077-010001 Castle - tower house
  Description

  On a slight, natural rise which slopes to the W in gently undulating pasture. The medieval parish church was located approx. 100m to N. The present ruined C of I church blocks view to N. The Ormond Deeds of 1530 record that 'Richard, son and heir of Thomas Howet of Lisronagh, grants to Peter Butler, Earl of Ormond, the site of his castle at Lisronagh which belonged to his father and grandfather before, but 'which was razed and destroyed by Edmund McPeris [fitz Piers Butler of Dunboyne]' (COD vol. 4, 142). The Civil Survey (1654-6) refers to 'Ellyn late Countess Dowager of Ormond and the Earle of Ormond' as proprietors of 'The Mannor, and Castle of Court-Lisronagh...[and] upon the sd lands...standeth a castle' (Simington 1931, vol. 1, 295-6). The OS Letters record that the ground floor of the tower house was inhabited at the time of their inspection in 1840 'A door, locked, prevented entrance to the ground floor; a man who lives in [the] castle and was absent on business somewhere, having secured it on his going out' (O'Flanagan 1930, vol. 2, 145). The five-storey tower house is constructed of limestone rubble, roughly coursed, with a base batter (H 3.2m; Wth 0.25-0.5m). It has cut limestone quoins, with occasional sandstone. The ground floor is entered by a doorway in the E end of the N wall. The doorway enters into a lobby area with a murder-hole above. From this lobby a mural passage runs W leading to the mural stairs and a doorway leads into the ground-floor chamber. The ground floor was lit by two single-light windows, one blocked in the centre of the E wall and another at the N end of the W wall. There are five wall cupboards, and a fireplace and flue has been inserted in the W wall. The first floor was carried on wooden beams supported on corbels, five on the S wall and three surviving on the N wall at the W end. At a later re-occupation phase, joist holes were inserted in the E wall and, less successfully, in the W wall. The shadow of a joist is visible c. 0.2m above the top of the corbels on the S wall. The first floor is entered from the mural stairs in the N wall. It is lit by two single-light windows, in the E and S walls. A doorway in the W wall gives access to a mural passage which is lit by a single-light window opposite the doorway. Access to the murder hole, at the E end of the N wall, probably doubled in function as a wall cupboard. This floor is roofed by a stone vault which is barrel-vaulted on the W end, but the E end appears to have collapsed and been rebuilt as a pointed vault. The mural stairs continues up the W wall. At the NW angle there is a murder-hole overhead which is accessed from a wall cupboard in the second-floor chamber. The mural stairs is lit by a number of flat-headed single-light windows. The second-floor is entered from a doorway in the W wall. It was lit by six flat-headed single-light windows, two in both the N and S walls and angle lights in the NE and SE angles. A mural stair leads from the W embrasure of the most easterly of the N windows. This stair runs up towards the NW angle giving access to a lobby which leads into a mural chamber at third-floor level in the W wall. The second-floor chamber has a poorly preserved fireplace in the centre of the E wall. At the S end of the W wall there is a recess containing a garderobe, with remains of an offset to carry a wooden seat and a convenient wall cupboard at the W end of the S wall, which is one of at least six wall cupboards at this level. The third floor was carried on wooden beams supported by corbels, four on the S wall and poor remains of at least three corbels in the N wall, with large beam holes in the W wall at N and S ends. The third floor was entered from the mural stairs at the S end of the W wall. It was lit by a flat-headed single-light window, with a window seat in the embrasure, at the E end of the N wall, and by a broken-out, probably two-light, window with window seat in the centre of the S wall. On the E side of this window embrasure steps lead to a doorway which gives access to a mural stairs running towards the SE angle. In the centre of the N wall is a flat-headed fireplace of roughly-cut voussoirs. A doorway in the W end of the S wall gives access to an L-shaped mural passage, lit by two single-light windows, with a garderobe chute in the SW angle. The fourth floor was carried on wooden beams supported on three large corbels in the N wall and one surviving broken corbel in the S wall. The fourth floor only partially survives but appears to have been altered and the original roof rebuilt to accommodate a higher parapet. Towards the W end of the S wall there is a small ogee-headed single-light window with two crude corbels on either side, and on the S side of the E wall there is a flat-headed doorway. Also on the E wall, at parapet level, there is a chimney stack, but the top parapet level is broken off. The garderobe chute exits (H above ground 0.5m; Wth 0.63m) at the base of the W wall at the S end, and is partially blocked with sandstone boulders. According to Lyons (1937, 245) the tower house lost its battlements c. 1830 during the building of the adjacent C of I church. At parapet level there are a series of water spouts, probably eight originally, now broken off. Only a portion of the base of the parapet wall survives with drainage hole intact. • TS077-010002 Church
  Description

  On a slight, natural rise which slopes to the W in gently undulating pasture, Lisronagh tower house (TS077-010001-) is c. 30m to the N. The church at Lisronagh is mentioned in the Ecclesiastical Taxation returns of 1319-22 (Barry 1977, 167). In 1570 there was a dispute between the Vicar of Lisronagh, Peter Howet, and the collectors of Rectorial tithes as to certain tithes of Lisronagh, the judgement given was in favour of the former (Curtis 1935-7, 56). The 1st (1840) and 2nd (1906) ed. OS 6-inch map indicate a C of I church which was built c. 1831 (Curtis 1935, 58). The C of I church now stands in ruins, within a rectangular graveyard (TS077-010004-). The OS Letters mention foundations of a wall visible to the E of the C of I church which may have been the E gable of the medieval church which 'has been demolished about seven years ago' (O'Flanagan 1930, vol. 2, 143), i.e. in the 1830s. According to Power (1907, 283-310) 'some remains of the ancient church stand in the graveyard beside the small, square, and well-preserved castle ruin of Lisronagh'. There is now no visible trace of the medieval church above ground. A late medieval graveslab (TS077-010005-) is located at the E gable of this church.   According to Power (1907, 283-310) 'some remains of the ancient church stand in the graveyard beside the small, square, and well-preserved castle ruin of Lisronagh'. The graveyard is rectangular in plan and is situated immediately N of Lisronagh tower house (TS077-010001-). The C of I church, which replaced the medieval church (TS077-010002-) was built c. 1831 (Curtis 1935-7, 58) and now lies in ruins.   Description

  A late medieval graveslab is located at the E gable of the C of I church at Lisronagh, formerly a medieval church (TS077-010002-). Only the upper (dims. L 0.89m; Wth 82.5m; T 0.11m) and lower (dims. L 0.64m; Wth 0.77m at top, 0.7m at base) portion survive. The slab is described in detail by Maher (1992, 30-36). 'It consists of a seven-armed cross, carved in relief, with simple floriated terminals' (ibid. 32). The top sinister side is broken off, but there are motifs in each of the three remaining sunken segments of the cross-head and outside the cross-head (ibid.). Three of these motifs are typically 'Celtic' in style and form (ibid., 34). Maher suggests a late 15th/early 16th-century date for this graveslab (ibid.).   Description

  Lyons (1937, 242-9) identified a number of earthworks associated with the medieval settlement of Lisronagh (TS077-010----). Running roughly S of the tower house, Lyons (1937, 243, 248) recognised an old roadway, this roadway runs immediately E of the raised platform (TS077-010008-) and consists of a shallow, flat-bottomed hollow-way (Wth 6m).   Lyons (1937, 242-9) identified a number of earthworks associated with the medieval settlement of Lisronagh (TS077-010----). In the field immediately S of the tower house, near the NW corner, there is a raised earthwork (TS077-010008-), roughly circular in shape (diam. 14.4m N-S; 10.3m E-W; H 0.42m) which roughly corresponds with Lyons' site 11 (ibid.), the adjacent field boundary, running N-S, appears to transect the W side of the earthwork, there appears to be some trace of it in the field to the W. • TS077-010010 Fulacht fia
  Description

  An excavation in Lisronagh in 2002 revealed the remains of a burnt mound (dims 7.8m E-W x 5.3m; max. surviving H 0.2m) (Lennon 2004, 478). The original extent of the mound is unclear, but, from the positioning of the two troughs uncovered, it is likely that it was horseshoe shaped, 2m by 2m, and opened to the NE (ibid.). The excavation uncovered two troughs, both cut into the subsoil. The first trough was subcircular (diam. 2m; D 0.47m) (ibid.). The second trough measured 2.3m east-west by 1.84m and was 0.47m deep (ibid.). There was no evidence that either trough had been lined with timber planks or stone slabs (ibid.). However, at the base of both troughs small stake-holes were uncovered (ibid.). These were oval in outline and situated away from the edges of the troughs (ibid.). They may have been the impressions left from a basket-style container used to hold meat while cooking (ibid.). Associated with the pits were several small pits (diam. c. 1m) (ibid.). These may have been associated with the storage or preparation of food used in the troughs (ibid.). To the E of the troughs an arc of post-holes was uncovered (ibid.). The posts may have formed a rudimentary shelter for those using the fulacht fia (ibid.). No trace of a hearth was uncovered during excavation (ibid.). A radiocarbon date of 1610±40 BC. was obtained from charcoal in the lower fill of the second trough (ibid.). Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 26 August 2011

• TS077-029 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  On a very gentle NE-facing slope in gently undulating terrain, under pasture. Circular area (diam. 31.5m N-S; 32.9m E-W) enclosed by a very low bank (Wth 1.7-2.3m crest, 5.8m base; int. H 0.4m; ext. H 1.1-2.05m), largely reduced to scarp, and fosse (Wth 3.4m), except in the NE and E quadrants. A field boundary runs concentrically with the bank in the W quadrant. The interior, which is covered with lush grass and some nettles, slopes to the NE. Scrub and brambles are growing around the edge of the scarp in N, W and S quadrants. • TS077-030001 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  On a gentle E-facing slope in gently undulating terrain, piggery situated to SW. Gravel roadway with high earthen bank on N side runs adjacent to the N quadrant. Tower house (TS077010001-) at Lisronagh visible c. 1.2km to NE and Donaghmore church (TS077-027001-) visible c. 1.5m to NW. This ringfort has been subject to disturbance. Circular area (diam. 29.7m N-S; E-W not obtainable due to heavy growth in E quadrant) defined by scarp (H 0.7m); round-bottomed fosse (Wth 2.3m; D 1.2m) and outer bank (Wth 2.2m crest, 5.3m base; ext. H 0.6m). The bank has been modified with a lot of refuse mixed-up with bank material, and it has been planted with conifers. Bank gone in N quadrant, on the 2nd (1906) ed. OS 6-inch map the outer bank is only depicted in SW quadrant. The inner scarp has also been levelled in N quadrant. The interior is planted with coniferous and deciduous trees. The S and E quadrants are badly overgrown. A possible roadway (TS077-030002-) appears to run from this ringfort towards the medieval settlement at Lisronagh to the NE.   Description

  In flat terrain with tillage fields on either side. A field boundary, running NE from 'Lisronagh' ringfort (TS077-030001-) towards Lisronagh settlement (TS077-010----) appears to be the remains of a old road (distance to settlement c. 500m) (Lyons 1937, 243). The boundary is described by the landowner as a 'double ditch' though it consists of a single large bank (Wth 2.26m crest, 4m base; H to NW 1.65m; H to SE 1.28m) with a field ditch running along the NW side.   Description

  Freestanding cruciform church, built 1831-2, comprising three-bay nave with single-bay chancel, single-bay sacristy to south-east, and gabled porches to north wall of nave, that to north-east being recent addition. Pitched slate roofs with carved limestone cross finials to main gables. Ashlar limestone bellcote to west gable having pointed arch bell opening and cross finial. Painted roughcast rendered walls with rendered plinth course. Pointed arch window openings having rendered surrounds and limestone sills, with stained glass to east, west and nave windows, traceried timber sash windows elsewhere, double six-over-six pane to transepts, six-over three-pane to older projections and three-over-three pane to recent addition. Camber-headed carved limestone doorcases to porches with roll mouldings and having pointed arch openings with replacement timber battened double doors. Interior has chamfered re-entrant corners, carved timber Stations of the Cross, and ornate marble reredos and shrine to Our Lady in north transept with cinquefoil detail over marble colonettes. Painted roughcast rendered piers with double-leaf cast-iron gates and rendered boundary walls. Graveyard adjacent to site.

  Description

  Freestanding limestone Board of First Fruits style church, built in 1831-2, comprising three-bay nave with porch to north, and two-stage tower to west having chamfered corners. Dismantled 1923, now roofless. Pitched roof, structure and covering gone. Carved stone pinnacles and crenellations to tower and remains of stone finial to east end. Roughly dressed snecked masonry walls, with ashlar quoins, and with string course, eaves course and angled buttresses to tower. Pointed arch window openings with chamfered surrounds and carved stone hood-mouldings. Double lancet windows to tower with hood-mouldings, some openings having timber louvers. Entrance to tower comprising Tudor arch opening with carved detail to spandrels and carved stone label-moulding. Church set within graveyard with some table tombs and with legible gravestones dating to late 1830s. Rubble limestone and sandstone masonry piers with double-leaf cast-iron gates and boundary walls. Medieval ruined tower house to south.
