• TS055-055 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  In reseeded grassland on a S-facing slope of rising ground in upland area with good extensive views from E through S to W, higher ground to N. Nearby possible enclosure (TS055-076----) 120m to NW and ringfort (TS055-056----) 200m to SE. Raised circular area (int. diam. 35m NW-SE; 38m E-W) enclosed by a bank which has been mainly reduced to a scarp (H 1-2m) and outer fosse (base Wth 1.5-2.5m; top Wth 4- 6m; ext. D 0.7-1.4m) with possible causewayed entrance gap (Wth 1.7m) at E. Cattle poaching on external face of scarp at SE otherwise monument is in a fair to good condition. Field boundaries to N and W have been removed and replaced with wire fencing. On 1840 ed. OS 6-inch map a field boundary running E-W intersects the ringfort at SW and SE, no remains of these field boundaries survive. Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 26 August 2011

• TS055-056 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  In wet unreclaimed grassland on a S-facing slope of rising ground in upland area with good extensive views from E through S to W, higher ground to N. Nearby possible enclosure (TS055-057----) 100m to NE and ringfort (TS055-055----) 200m to NW. Raised circular area (int. diam. 30m N-S; 31m E-W) enclosed by a bank (top Wth 2.2m; base Wth 5m; int. H 0.3m; ext. H 0.3-1.5m) which has been mainly reduced to a scarp (H 1-2m) and outer fosse (base Wth 2m; top Wth 4m; ext. D 0.3m) best preserved on the downslope from SW through S to SE. Possible entrance gap (Wth 3m) at NE. Bank only visible at N elsewhere it is covered in bushes and nettles. Platform style ringfort which has been built into sloping terrain where it is nearly level with external ground surface on the uslope at N and is at its highest on the downslope at S, constructed in such a way as to provide a level platform on sloping wet terrain. Small shallow quarry (dims. 4m N-S x 8m E-W x 0.6m D) located in NE quadrant of ringfort, perimeter of ringfort covered in thorn and furze bushes at time of inspection. • TS055-057 Enclosure
  Description

  In grassland on a S-facing slope of rising ground in upland region with good views to S and higher ground to N. Nearby ringfort (TS055-056----) 100m to SW. Possible circular enclosure (diam. 46m N-S; 44m E-W) indicated by slight rise (Wth 4m; H 0.2m) of ground and external fosse (top Wth 6m; base Wth 4m; ext. D 0.2m) visible from W to N only, no other features visible. Indicated as a semi-circular arc on 1840 ed.   Description

  On poorly drained slightly undulating grassland atop low rise of ground with good views in all directions. Nearby moated site (TS055-059----) 220m to S. Not visible at ground level. • TS055-059 Moated site
  Description

  In wet grassland on a S-facing slope of rising ground in upland region with good views in all directions. Enclosure (TS055-058----) 220m to the N. Moated site consists of a slightly raised square-shaped area (int. dims. 30m NW-SE; 30m NE-SW) enclosed by a poorly preserved earthen bank (top Wth 2m; base Wth 5m; int. H 0.1m; ext. H 1m) mainly reduced to a scarp and outer fosse (base Wth 2.5m; top Wth 4.5m; ext. D 0.6m) visible from NW through N to E only elsewhere it has been filled in. No clear entrance feature visible although there are gaps along all four sides of the moated site averaging 2.5m wide, all of which appear to be cattle gaps, S corner has been quarried out (Wth 6m). Interior has been planted in trees at the turn of the century which have caused considerable damage. The enclosing bank is best preserved along its NE side elsewhere it has been reduced to a scarp. Classic moated site in classic location. Field boundary shown intersecting with N corner of moated site no longer visible, field bank has been removed. Centre of N, S , E and W banks has a gap (Avg. Wth 2.5m), these all appear to be livestock entrances. Moated site is in a fair to poor condition, enclosing features are poorly preserved while interior is in a fair to good condition. • TS055-076 Enclosure
  Description

  In grassland on a SW-facing slope of rising ground in upland area with good views to SW higher ground to NE. Ringfort (TS055-055----) located 120m to SE. Roughly oval-shaped area (diam. 34m N-S; 26m E-W) defined by a low barely visible rise of ground (Wth 2m; int. H 0.1m; ext. H 0.3m) visible from S through W to N and intermittently on the other sides. Not indicated on 1840 ed. OS 6-inch map, and hachured as semi-circular rise of ground on the 1903 ed.   Description

  Detached four-bay with attic thatched house, built c.1800, having lobby-entry plan, with recent lower two-bay additions to west end and to rear. Half-hipped straw thatch roof with raised decoratively-scolloped ridge and recent brick chimneystack. Pitched artificial slate roof to extension. Roughcast rendered walls with smooth render plinth. Square-headed timber sliding sash one-over-one pane windows with painted sills. Windbreak with replacement timber battened door. Recent rubble limestone boundary wall to front, with wrought-iron pedestrian gate. Rubble limestone outbuilding with barrel-shaped corrugated-iron roof and square-headed timber battened doors.
