- TS063-052 Enclosure
Description
In a very poorly drained area of improved pasture, on a W-facing slope. Depicted on the 2nd (1906) ed. OS 6-inch map as a sub-oval enclosure (dims. c. 30m E-W; c. 25m N-S) with a stream, now culverted, flowing c. E-W extending SW from a blocked-up spring within a gentle depression. It is not visible at ground level. Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 26 August 2011

Description
Within the modern town of Mullinahone there is a 13th/14th-century hall-house (TS063-071001-), traditionally ascribed to the Knights Templar, and formerly a chapel (TS063-071004-) nearby (Cairns 1987, 14). There is no documentary, cartographic or visible evidence of a medieval settlement associated with the hall-house. Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 6 October 2014

Description
On an impressive outcrop of limestone which stands at a height of 1m over present ground level, at the rear of Mr. Michael Cahill's public house (Castle View), on the E side of Carrick Street. There was a chapel (TS063-071004-) c. 30m to the SE. By tradition this castle is ascribed to the Knights Templar (Cairns 1987, 14). A strong rectangular two-storey structure (ext. dims. 17.30m E-W x 13.50m N-S; int. dims. 12.20m E-W x 8.85m N-S), of roughly coursed limestone rubble (wall T 1.5m above the base-batter) with roughly cut quoins, no cut stone utilised in the construction of the building. The substantial base-batter (H 3.5m; Wth 1.4m) has been robbed-out on all sides. There is a small stair turret (dims. 3m square) at the NW angle which is obscured by thick ivy growth. The N, E, and S walls survive to their full height while the W wall stands only to first-floor level. The SW corner has collapsed leaving the upper masonry of the western end of the S wall hanging precariously and there are several large breaches in the corresponding ivy-clad N wall. The hall-house was entered through a round-headed door embrasure centrally placed in the E wall at first-floor level. The arch is composed of rough wedge-shaped voussoirs with impressions of plank-centering on the soffit. The first-floor was lit by large round-headed windows and rested on a timber floor. The ground floor was lit by rectangular loops in the N and S walls. The deep, straight-sided window embrasures are in very poor condition. The interior is filled with rubble, debris and dead foliage, the build-up of which obscures the ground-floor masonry. The roof was contained within the side walls of the hall-house. On the upper part of the internal face of the E wall there is an internally projecting course and c. 1m above this there are three corbels spaced along the wall with a line of beam-holes above. Externally, below the top of the wall, there are a series of large beam-holes along each wall. Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 26 August 2011

Description
In an area of marshland, with some reclaimation, on a gentle N-facing slope at the junction of four fields. It is located immediately SE of St. Michael's Church, Mullinahone. A stream flows SE-NW to the SW and there are three springs in the field immediately to the S. A poorly preserved, roughly circular area (diam. 28.20m N-S; 30.50m E-W) enclosed by an earthen bank (Wth 9m at base; int. H 0.8m; ext. H 1m) with a high stone content and fosse (Wth 4m). The bank is best preserved from N-NW and at S and elsewhere is barely discernible. It is sparsely covered with hawthorns and briars. The fosse is only evident from the E-S-W. (Farrelly and FitzPatrick 1993, 125-6). Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 26 August 2011

- TS063-071004 Chapel
Description
On the E side of Carrick Street, c. 45m behind the street front on a slight rise in an area of rough ground which is bounded by a concrete wall to the W, the tumbled remains of an old wall to the N and by conifers along the N, E and S boundary. The ground slopes to the W. The area is overgrown and has been used as a dumping ground. A chain-link fence has been built inside the line of the N wall. There is a hall-house (TS063-071001-) c. 30m to the NW. The chapel is indicated as an L-shaped building on the 1st (1840) ed. OS 6-inch map, with the main portion running E-W and a return running N-S from the N face at the E end. By the 2nd (1904) ed. OS 6-inch map it is indicated as 'Chapel (Site of)'. There is no visible trace of the chapel above ground. There may have been a graveyard (TS063-071005-) associated with this chapel. Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of revised upload: 6 October 2014
