- TS062-118 Ringfort - rath
Description
On level ground in gently undulating terrain, under pasture with channelised stream c. 250m to W. Roughly circular ringfort (diam. 29.3m N-S; 34m E-W) enclosed by a bank (Wth 7.8m; int. H 0.96m; ext. H 1.94m); fosse (Wth 2.8m; D 1.07m) and outer bank visible from NW-N (Wth 4.3m; ext. H 0.35m). Banks of earthen construction. Field boundary which ran E-W along S side of ringfort has been levelled and some of the material dumped in the monument, particularly in the W and S quadrants where it has filled the fosse and obscured the outer bank. The ringfort is grass covered, with scrub on the bank in the S quadrant and trees and scrub on the banks in the N sector. There is a gap (Wth 4m) in the W quadrant. - TS070-007001 Castle - unclassified
Description
On flat ground on the E bank of the Clashawley river with Rathcool motte (TS070-008---) located c. 25m to the S and Rathcool church (TS070-009----) and graveyard (TS070-009001-) 350m to the S. According to the Civil Survey (1654-56), the 'lands of Rathcoole, Farrenmabin, Cuarraghscartin Bellavady & Garryduffe...hath on it a Castle a Thatcht house, an old Oarchard & a Garden with sev[er]all small Cottages & the Rivolett Glassalin run[n]ing through it', with 'James Lord Barron of Dunboyne Irish Papist' the proprietor in 1640 (Simington 1931, vol. 1, 191). The 2nd (1903-04) ed. 6-inch OS map indicates that Rathcoole house (TS070-007002-) is on the site of Rathcoole Castle. This is indeed the case as one wall of a medieval castle, probably a tower house, still survives 2.2m from the present S end of the two-storey house where it joins onto a later three-storey house. The wall, two-storeys high (Wth 1.7m) has an external base-batter (H 2m; Wth 0.3m) facing N. The rest of the castle appears to have been levelled. It is possible that the thatched house, mentioned in the Civil Survey, was built onto the exterior of the N wall of the castle and thus this wall was retained. The present two-storey house, running roughly N-S, is possibly that 17th house. During recent renovations within the house the central portion of an ogee two-light cut limestone window head, probably of 16th-century date, was recovered from the stonework of the chimney of the two-storey house. - TS070-007002 House - 17th century
6-inch OS map indicates that Rathcoole house is on the site of Rathcoole Castle (TS070-007001-). Rathcoole house is a two-phase building, the earlier two-storey six-bay house (L 28.7m; Wth 4.6m; wall T 0.5-0.65m) runs roughly N-S while a later mid-18th century block runs eastward from the S end of the earlier house. The two-story house is one room deep, though a corridor runs from the kitchen along the W wall giving access to other rooms. The southern end of the house probably originally was built up against the wall of a castle, the N wall of which still survives. The original large fireplace in the kitchen was modified during renovations and a cut limestone architectural fragment, probably from the castle and of 16th-century date, was recovered from the stonework of the chimney. The two-storey house has three brick chimneys, all later insertions. Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 23 March 2012
- TS070-008 Castle - motte
Description
In low-lying valley of the Clashawley river which runs c. 20m W of base of motte. Rathcool castle (TS070-007001-) and possible 17th-century house (TS070-007002-) is located c. 25m to the NNW. Rathcool church and graveyard are located 350m to the S. Empey (1985, 74) mentions that the sheriff of Tipperary in 1297, Walter le Bret, was robbed of £100 from his manor of Rathcool. There is a ridge running N-S to E of motte. A well-preserved, flat-topped motte (basal diam. 32.2m N-S; 33.8m E-W; H 6.4-7.4m H), the oval summit (diam. 10.8m N-S; 10.2m E-W) is enclosed by a low stone wall, (H 0.52-0.65m) two courses high, obscured by grass. There is a steep drop on all but the N side where there is a more gentle slope. There is a beech tree growing on the summit and a post and wire fence around the base c. 3-10 from edge. There is no visible evidence of a bailey, the flat ground to the N or S could have been utilised, the former is now occupied by Rathcool castle and possible 17th-century house and landscaped garden, while the area to the S was seen as a likely candidate by Lyons (ITA files, N.D.).
