Description
Situated in an area of marsh and rock outcrop on the N shore of Youghal Bay along the E side of Lough Derg. A castle is described in the Civil Survey (1654-6) as 'an old ruined castle the walls onely standing' (Simington 1934, vol. 2, 299). It is also depicted on the Down Survey maps of 1654-7 (NLI MS 721). No visible trace above ground; modern house built on site of castle. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Tipperary. Vol. 1 - North Tipperary' compiled by Jean Farrelly and Caimin O'Brien (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2002). Description
Situated in an area of marsh and rock outcrop on the N shore of Youghal Bay along the E side of Lough Derg. In 1617 the 'castle, town and lands of Tomonia were granted to William O'Meara (Cal. pat.
