  Description

  Situated on a gentle E-facing slope with the Poulaneigh River running close to the W edge of the site, in reclaimed pastureland. An oval-shaped area (diam. c. 30m N-S) defined by an earthen bank (Wth 1.3m; int. H 0.2m; ext. H 1.24m) partially levelled at SE and NE. Site very heavily overgrown with brambles. • TN041-079 Water mill - unclassified
  Description

  Waste ground adjacent to Thurles golf course. Site marked as T-plan building called 'Turtulla Flour Mill' on 1st (1848) ed. OS 6-inch map but not indicated on 2nd (1952-53) ed. Mill race survives but there is no trace of the mill building. No memory of mill according to local information though there is a memory of some ruins including a length of wall which as children they called 'the Black Chapel'. On John Rocque's map of Thurles 1755 an 'Old Mill' is marked at this location (NLI Estate Maps: 16.I.17(9)) which suggests that the mill may have been seventeenth-century in date. • TN047-021 Church
  Description

  Situated at the base of a gentle N-facing slope in the flat floodplain of the River Suir which is c. 50m N of the site. Described as the 'Rectory of Fertene' in the taxation of the Diocese of Cashel in 1302 (CDI, vol. 5, 283). The church, which has almost completely collapsed, is aligned E-W. A short portion of the S wall (H 1.7m; L c. 2m; Wth 0.7m), of limestone rubble, is still standing while the N and E walls are marked by a grassed-over mound of collapsed masonry. The line of the W gable is difficult to discern with loose stone and portion of wall collapsed into the interior. The church measures between 16.5m and 18.4m in length internally and is 4.5m wide. It was in better condition when visited by the Ordnance Survey c. 1840. The dimensions given are 16.8m x 4.8m (50ft 6in x 16ft) (O'Flanagan 1930, vol. 2, 194). There is no graveyard marked on the 1843 or the 1952-3 ed. of the OS 6-inch map. However, remains of the graveyard are visible N of the church, where a collapsed wall (Wth c. 2m) enclosed a roughly square area (dims. 24m N-S; 25m E-W). There is a probable entrance at the N end of the W wall (Wth 2.2m). There are old field boundaries to the N, SW and S of the church.   Situated on a gentle NW-facing slope in gently undulating terrain, in pasture. Indicated on the 1st ed. (1843) OS 6-inch map as a roughly circular enclosure (diam. c. 42m N-S).   Description

  Situated on a slight rise in gently undulating terrain, in pasture. The site is indicated as a rectangular enclosure on the 1st ed. (1843) OS 6-inch map but is not marked on the subsequent 1952-3 revision. A rectangular enclosure (dims. 25.7m NE-SW; 27.3m NW-SE) which was probably levelled between 1843 and 1952. Lush grass growth indicates the line of the fosse (Wth 3m) at NW and at the N and W angles. The NE side is not as clearly defined. The SE side is delineated by a hedgerow with a deep fosse along its NW side. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Tipperary. • Turtulla House, country house, 1835–1840 · Regional interest
  Description

  Detached irregular-plan two-storey country house, built 1837-8, comprising two parallel five-bay two-storey blocks with canted bays, multiple-bay two-storey block to north and three-bay single-storey with dormer block to west. Recent glazed addition to north-east. Now in use as golf clubhouse. Pitched artificial slate roofs with rendered chimneystacks. Rendered walls with moulded stone string course to south elevation and plaque over entrance to west elevation. Square-headed openings with single and mullioned double and triple timber sliding sash windows, one-over-one pane mainly with some two-over-two pane to ground floor, having stone sills and with label-mouldings to first floor of west and south elevations. Canted bay window with balustraded balcony, and canted oriel window to south elevation. Timber glazed panelled double doors in canted entrance with timber sash sidelights. Detached five-bay two-storey outbuilding to northwest, having hipped slate roof, rendered chimneystacks, roughcast rendered walls, and timber sash windows with stone sills. Remains of walled garden to site.
