Description
Situated towards the top of a S-facing slope. First identified in archaeological testing (02E0275) in advance of the N25 Waterford City by-pass (Russell (2006f), and fully excavated ((03E1217) as structures 1 and 3, which are part of Adamstown 3 (Russell 2006g). This is a complex but confined area (diam. c. 10m) with numerous post-holes, segments of a slot trench S-W (C c. 4m) and two hearths representing two huts at this location. It may have had a porch entrance at SE. One post-hole was packed with a fragment of a saddle-quern, and the fill of another post-hole produced a C14 date of cal BC 1700-1430 (Russell 2003). Situated on a SE-facing slope. First identified in archaeological testing (02E0275) in advance of the N25 Waterford City by-pass (Russell (2006f), and fully excavated (03E1215) as a feature in Area A of Adamstown 1 (Russell 2006i). This is an arc of stake-holes (diam. c. 10m) surviving SE-N. The stake-holes (diam. c. 7cm; D c. 0.2m) are too slight to be structural, and there were no significant internal features. Hut-site (WA017-123006-) and kiln (WA017-123007-) are c. 35m to the ENE, while kiln (WA017-0123004-) is c. 85m to the NW. (Russell and Ginn 2011a) Russell, I. (2006f) Site 3, Adamstown/Knockanagh. Description
Situated on a SE-facing slope. First identified in archaeological testing (02E0275) in advance of the N25 Waterford City by-pass (Russell (2006f), and fully excavated (03E1215) as Structure 2 in Area A of Adamstown 1 (Russell 2006i). This is a circular area (diam. c. 7m) defined by 13 post-holes placed c. 2m apart with five further post-holes within this circle. The entrance (Wth c. 1.7m) is marked by a pair of double post-holes at SE, and there are a large number of internal stake-holes. C14 dates of cal BC 1260-900 and cal BC 1280-880 were derived from the post-holes. The two possible kilns (WA017-123007-) within are probably not contemporary. The enclosure (WA017-123005-) is c. 35m to the WSW. (Russell and Ginn 2009b, 9-12; 2011a) Russell, I. (2006f) Site 3, Adamstown/Knockanagh. Testing. in I. Bennett (Ed.) Within the hut-site (WA017-123006-), but probably not associated with it, is a pit (dims. c. 0.62m x 0.5m; D 8cm) that contained a fragment of slag and a heat-shattered grinding stone. Description
Situated towards the top of a SE-facing slope. First identified in archaeological monitoring (03E1064) of the re-alignment of a gas-pipeline (Dempsey 2006) and later fully excavated (03E1325) as Adamstown 4 (Russell 2006j). A pit (dims. 1.5m x 1m; D 0.12) was lined with fire-redenned stones, from which a stone anvil or hammer-stone was recovered. A C14 date of cal. 1380-920 was obtained from this fill. A smaller pit (dims. 0.7m a 0.65m; D 0.5m) and a cluster of stakeholes is nearby. (Russell and Ginn 2009b, 8-9; 2011e) Dempsey, J. (2006) Adamstown and Ballyduff East. Pits, kilns and furrows. in I. Description
Situated on a SE-facing slope. Identified and excavated in archaeological monitoring (03E1064) of the re-alignment of a gas-pipeline (Dempsey 2006). A suboval pit (dims. 2.1m x 1.8m; D 0.65m) was lined with a fire-redenned oxidised clay and filled with layers of clay and some charcoal flecks. There were other pits and stakholes in the vicinity.
