• WM003-043 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated on a natural rise of ground with good views to NE, E and SW. Large oval-shaped area (approx. diam. 79m NW-SE; 53m NE-SW) enclosed by a well preserved substantial earth and stone bank (Wth 3-5m; int. H 1.5-2m), with wide deep fosse and the remains of an external bank only visible from N-E-S. Causewayed entrance (Wth 3.8m) at W. The external bank appears to be the remains of a post-1700 field boundary as depicted on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map. The interior of the ringfort has old cultivation ridges running NE-SW through it.   Description

  Situated on flat poorly drained land with good views to SE and higher ground to W. A large spring well marked as 'The Big Well' on the OS 6-inch map lies 40m to S. Present remains consist of a waterlogged low circular shaped mound enclosed by a shallow fosse and low earthen bank intersected at E by public road running NNW-SSE.   Description

  Freestanding cast-iron, water pump, erected c.1885. Banded cylindrical shaft with fluted neck and flat plate top with 'cow-tail' handle. Cap now missing. Set on cement base and surrounded by concrete wall, open to front (south). Located to the north of Castlepollard, adjacent to rural road junction.

  Description

  Detached three-bay two-storey house, built c.1830. Single-storey lean-to extension to the west side and complex of outbuildings to the rear (north). Hipped natural slate roof with overhanging eaves, two central red brick chimneystacks and cast-iron rainwater goods. Roughcast rendered walls over smooth rendered plinth course. Square-headed window openings having cut stone sills and two-over-two pane timber sliding sash windows. Central round-headed doorcase with cut limestone block-and-start doorcase having replacement glazed timber door with a plain fanlight over. Set back from road, at a right angle, with rubble limestone boundary wall to road-frontage (east). Located to the north of Castlepollard.
