• WM025-050 Castle - tower house
  Description

  Situated on W facing slope of a low rise, in pasture. Depicted as a rectangular-shaped structure and annotated ‘Oldtown Castle (in Ruins)’ on the 1913 ed. OS 25-inch map. Castle described in 1978 as a rectangular-shaped area (dims. 8m NW-SE; 6m NE-SW) defined by low grass-covered walls (H 2-2.5m), the interior is partly filled with collapsed rubble. There are low banks and wall footings in the immediate vicinity, some of which form the outlines of low buildings adjoining the castle. Larger enclosures extend out from the castle on all sides. These earthworks are clearly visible on oblique aerial photographs (CUCAP AOZ005/006/AYR022) taken 12/07/1966 and 11/07/1969 respectively Compiled by Alison McQueen, Vera Rahilly and Caimin O’Brien. • WM025-056 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated on a slight rise, in gently undulating and low-lying wet pasture, with good views in all directions. A ringfort (WM025-057----) lies c. 145m to SW. Bivallate ringfort described in 1977 as a large circular-shaped area enclosed by a bank, an intervening fosse and an outer bank. The inner bank of earth and stone is low and rounded. The banks have been levelled from NNE-NE, where the perimeter is marked instead by a low rise. There is a fairly well preserved intervening fosse and an outer bank at NW. The interior has a gentle SE-facing slope and a rectangular-shaped house site (WM025-056001-) in the centre. Compiled by Alison McQueen, Vera Rahilly and Caimin O’Brien. • WM025-056001 House - indeterminate date
  Description

  Situated on a slight rise, in gently undulating and low-lying wet pasture, with good views in all directions. In the centre of ringfort (WM025-056----) are the poorly preserved remains of a rectangular-shaped house site (dims. 7m NW-SE; 6m NE-SW). Old field banks run outside the outer bank at NW, N and one intersects the perimeter at SW. A low bank (approx. L 7m) runs into the interior from SW and may be an old field bank. • WM025-057 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated on a slight rise, in gently undulating pasture, with good views in all directions. A ringfort (WM025-056----) lies c. 145m to NE and an enclosure (WM025-055----) lies c. 180m to WNW. Bivallate ringfort described as a roughly circular-shaped area (diam. 38m) enclosed by an inner bank, an intervening fosse and an outer bank. A causewayed entrance is located at ENE where there is a gap (Wth at top 5.8m; basal Wth 3.4m) in the inner bank, a causeway (Wth at top 2.2m; overall Wth 6.8m; max. H c. 1.2m) across the fosse and a gap (Wth at top 8.6m; basal Wth 6.7m) in the outer bank. The earth and stone inner bank is substantial and has definite traces of an internal stone facing. There are several disturbance gaps in the inner bank. A wide and waterlogged fosse is present from ENE-E-S-W-N which is absent from N-NE-ENE. There are the remains of an outer bank only visible from NW-N and from ENE-S-W. The fosse and outer bank are obscured by a modern field fence which flanks the base of the inner bank from N-NE-ENE. There are the remains of a stone facing on the N side of the inner gap and large stones scattered on the opposite side of the same gap. The interior rises gently from the perimeter to the centre and is featureless. Monument is visible as a roughly circular-shaped earthwork on oblique aerial photograph (CUCAP AYR024) taken 11/07/1969.
