• WM025-012 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Located just off top of ridge of rising ground on NE facing slope with good views in all directions. Levelled R. C. Chapel (WM025-154----) located 60m to N, medieval church site (WM025-011----) and graveyard (WM025-011002-) 100m to N. Well preserved ringfort which is now fenced off and inaccessible due to dense cover of scrub vegetation around the perimeter of the monument. Recorded in 1976 by Archaeological Survey of Ireland when the monument was described as a ‘large circular ringfort (int. diam. c. 36m; overall ext. diam. c. 68m) outlined by a wide low bank of earth and stones. On north, east and south the bank is set on a low embankment. Outside the bank there is a wide shallow fosse with a wide low outer bank beyond it. The interior slopes gently from west to east. There is a low stony outcrop to the west of centre. Inside the bank on the SE there is the outline of a large rectangular house (WM025-012001-). There is no apparent entrance to the interior of the ringfort. The earthwork is on a low gentle rise in good pasture land with good views to north, east and south with restricted views to SW and west’ (SMR File 17/08/1976). An earlier ASI report from 1971 recorded the presence of an entrance gap (Wth 2.2m-4.9m) at ENE (SMR File 09/04/1971). • WM025-012001 House - indeterminate date
  Description

  Located just off top of ridge of rising ground on NE facing slope with good views in all directions. Levelled R. C. Chapel (WM025-154----) located 60m to N, medieval church site (WM025-011----) and graveyard (WM025-011002-) 100m to N. The presence of a rectangular house site aligned NW-SE in the ESE quadrant of the ringfort was recorded in 1971 by Archaeological Survey of Ireland (SMR File 09/04/1971). In this year the monument was described as following; ‘inside the bank on the ESE there is a rectangular NW-SE house site (int. dims. 8.7m x 6.5m) represented by remains of an earth and stone bank (H 0.5m; Wth 1.2m). • WM025-038 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated on a natural rise, in gently undulating and hilly pasture, with good views in all directions. Field system lies c. 55m to NE at its closest point with possible barrow and ringfort (WM025-036---- /WM025-037001-) c. 200m and 275m to NW, respectively. Monument described in 1971 as a large circular-shaped area (approx. diam. 52m) enclosed by a substantial inner bank, a wide deep intervening fosse and large outer bank. There is an entrance gap (Wth at top 7.6m; basal Wth 3m) in the inner bank, a corresponding gap in the outer bank and a causeway (Wth at top 6m; basal Wth 8.2m; max. H c. 1m) across the fosse at E. The causeway is defined either side by traces of a low bank and incorporates some large stones, however these do not form any definite plan. The inner bank is best preserved from SW-W and from N-E and has been reduced to a scarp from E-SW and from W-N. It has definite indications of an internal stone facing. The outer bank has traces of internal stone facing and there are some disturbance gaps in places including one at the S side of the entrance. A modern roadside earthen bank and wire fence has been constructed against the external face of the outer bank from NNW-N. The footings of an old stone wall cross the top of the outer bank at ESE. A modern wall running NW-SE is located to the immediate NE of the monument. A modern field fence running NW-SE intersects the outer bank at WSW. The interior rises gently from the perimeter towards the centre and is traversed by cultivation ridges running NW-SE. A souterrain (WM025-038001-) and a house site (WM025-038002-) are located within. • WM025-038001 Souterrain
  Description

  Situated on a natural rise, in gently undulating and hilly pasture, with good views in all directions. In the centre of ringfort (WM025-038----) is a long surface depression (L 9m; Wth 2.2m) extending ESE-WNW to a circular depression (diam. 2.5m) at the WNW end, just within the ringfort bank. The linear and circular depressions are defined along the edges by what may be the upper portions of drystone walling.   Description

  Situated on a natural rise, in gently undulating and hilly pasture, with good views in all directions. In ringfort (WM025-038----) there is a rectangular-shaped depression (dims. 4m N-S; 3.5m E-W) defined by stone-faced sides which may be the remains of a house site. The masonry and sides of the depression are broken in places. The entrance is not clearly visible. Extending in an irregular line from the house site to the inside of the ringfort bank at SE are the grass covered wall footings of what appears to have been an internal partition wall. • WM025-047 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated on a low rise, in undulating pasture, with good views to E and SE. Monument described as a roughly circular-shaped area (diam. 33.4m) enclosed by a bank with no trace of a fosse or entrance feature. The monument is much disturbed and the low bank is visible from NW-N and from ESE-SE-S. The bank has been reduced to a scarp from WSW-NW and the exterior has been quarried at NW. The interior has a SSE-facing slope and has traces of cultivation ridges running WSW-ENE. There is evidence of quarrying in the SE quadrant and there are facing stones set on edge defining the quarry scarp and enclosing bank at this location. • WM025-048 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated on a SW-facing slope of a low rise, in pasture, with good views to SW, W and NW. Bivallate ringfort described as a circular-shaped area (diam. 29m) enclosed by an inner bank, an intervening fosse and an outer bank with possible entrance at SE. The low inner bank is best preserved from NW-N-E-SE and has been reduced to a scarp from SE-S-W-NW. The fosse is wide, deep and U-shaped from NW-N-E-SE and is shallow or completely infilled elsewhere. The outer bank has intermittent disturbance gaps from SSE-S-SW. The inner bank, fosse and outer bank have been much disturbed by quarrying from W-NW. The interior has a gentle ESE-facing slope with traces of cultivation ridges visible running WNW-ESE. • WM025-049 Cist
  Description

  Cahill and Sikora (2011, 516-9) record that ‘in early February 1971 a short cist containing an inhumation and a bowl was discovered during ploughing operations on a farm near Castletown Geoghegan, Co. Westmeath. The capstone of the cist had been discovered about 0.2m below ground level when the point of plough caught in it and moved it approximately 0.4m out of position so that the south corner was exposed. The vessel was removed from the grave but the area was otherwise undisturbed. The site was reported to the NMI by Mrs Ruth Vandeleur, Wardenstown, Co. Westmeath. A one-day rescue excavation was undertaken by Dr Joseph Raftery. The human remains from the cist were examined by Professor C.A. Erskine. The cist was rectangular in plan, with its long axis running north-east/south-west. Internally it measured 1.18m long by 0.8m wide by 0.48m high. It was constructed of four thin edge-set slabs, with a maximum thickness of 0.lm. Each of the four slabs formed a wall of the cist. That at the south-western end was somewhat shorter than the others, and this was compensated for by positioning smaller stones on the end stone in order that the capstone would rest level on all four walls. All of the cist slabs were of limestone. There was no evidence for packing stones around the outside of the cist. A large, subrectangular capstone measuring 1.28m long by 1.24m wide by 0.12m thick sealed the cist. The floor of the cist was no-but was formed of hard, grey, packed soil. The grave contained a crouched inhumation burial of a male (1971:906) and a tripartite bowl. The cist was filled to a depth of about 0.15m with loose earth, which had apparently been thrown in to partly cover the body. The body lay on its right side, with the arms a flexed and the head at the south-western end and the feet at the north-east. The bowl had been placed close to the skull in the south-eastern corner. According to Raftery, the hands had been placed at either side of the vessel. A radiocarbon determination from a collagen sample produced a date of 3755±35 BP,which calibrates to 2287-2038 BC at 95% probability. Brindley (2007, 246-7) places this vessel in stage 2 of the development of the bowl tradition, and suggests that this took place over a period of 100 years centred on 2030 BC (i.e. 2080-1980 BC)'. • WM025-050 Castle - tower house
  Description

  Situated on W facing slope of a low rise, in pasture. Depicted as a rectangular-shaped structure and annotated ‘Oldtown Castle (in Ruins)’ on the 1913 ed. OS 25-inch map. Castle described in 1978 as a rectangular-shaped area (dims. 8m NW-SE; 6m NE-SW) defined by low grass-covered walls (H 2-2.5m), the interior is partly filled with collapsed rubble. There are low banks and wall footings in the immediate vicinity, some of which form the outlines of low buildings adjoining the castle. Larger enclosures extend out from the castle on all sides. • WM025-053 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated on a low rise, in undulating pasture, with good views in all directions. A moated site (WM025-054----) lies c. 35m to E and an enclosure (WM025-055----) lies c. 160m to SE. Monument described in 1971 as a large subcircular-shaped area enclosed by an inner bank, an intervening fosse and an outer bank with entrance (Wth at top 7.2m; Wth at base 3.5m) and causeway (overall Wth 6.3m; Wth at top 2.4m; H 0.4m) at ENE. The inner earth and stone bank has an irregular outline and has several disturbance gaps. The wide, shallow fosse is best preserved from WSW-W-N-NE. The outer bank is visible from WSW-W-N-NE. The interior has a general SE-facing slope and rises slightly towards the centre. A low, short scarp (L 15m; H 1m) running NW-SE extends from the interior of the inner bank at NW. • WM025-054 Moated site
  Description

  Situated on a low rise, in undulating pasture, with good views in all directions. A ringfort (WM025-053----) lies c. 35m to W and an enclosure lies c. 145m to SE. Monument described in 1971 as a rectangular-shaped area enclosed by an inner earthen bank, an intervening fosse and an outer earthen bank. The inner bank (int. H 0.3m; ext. H 0.75m; Wth at top 0.3m; overall Wth 1.4m) is low, narrow, yet steep and has several small disturbance gaps. The fosse (Wth at top 2.4m; basal Wth 1.3m; D 0.45m) is narrow, shallow and flat-bottomed. The outer bank is slight and is visible along the N side with a short return along the E side. An outer bank is also present along the W side. A bank extends from the outer bank at the NW corner of the monument. There is no trace of a formal entrance and the interior has a S-facing slope. There are old field banks in the immediate vicinity which may be contemporary with this monument and the ringfort to W. • WM025-055 Enclosure - large enclosure
  Description

  Situated on a slight rise, in gently undulating and low-lying wet pasture, overlooked by higher ground. Annotated ‘Rathglass’ on 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map. A moated site (WM025-054----) and a ringfort (WM025-053----) lies c. 145m and c. 160m to NW, respectively and a ringfort (WM025-057----) lies c. 180m to ESE. Monument described in 1971 as an unusually large subrectangular-shaped area (approx. diam. 118m E-W x 80m N-S) enclosed by an earthen bank and an external fosse. The bank is slight and is pierced with numerous small disturbance gaps. The bank has been reduced to a steep scarp from NE-E-ESE where it incorporates a later field bank. Vague traces of wide, shallow fosse are visible from SSW-W-N and a water-logged trench is present from NE-E-ESE. There are faint traces of a possible outer bank from SSW-W-N. The original entrance is not recognisable. There are old field banks in the immediate vicinity which may be contemporary with this monument and those to NW and ESE. Two of these field banks traverse the fosse and extend to the foot of the bank at SW and NW. The interior rises gently from the perimeter towards the centre and there is a long rectangular-shaped house site (WM025-055001-) in the SE quadrant.   Description

  Situated on a slight rise, in gently undulating and low-lying wet pasture, overlooked by higher ground. In the SE quadrant of large enclosure (WM025-055----) is a long rectangular-shaped house site (dims. int. L 14.7m; int. Wth 5.6m; overall L 16.4m; overall Wth 9.8m) defined by a bank (Wth c. 2m) of earth and stone with entrance doorway (approx. Wth 1.6m) in NW corner. The interior is divided into an ENE compartment (int. L 6.2m; int. Wth 5.2m) and a WSW compartment (int. L 6.6m; int. Wth 5.8m) by a smaller earthen bank running NW-SE. This internal division has a gap (approx. Wth 1.6m) at the NW end, presumably representing an internal doorway. A low, broad earth and stone bank running NNW-SSE extends 29 meters to NNW from the N corner of the house site. See attached plan and profile of monument surveyed and drawn by the ASI.   Description

  Situated on a slight rise, in gently undulating and low-lying wet pasture, with good views in all directions. A ringfort (WM025-057----) lies c. 145m to SW. Bivallate ringfort described in 1977 as a large circular-shaped area enclosed by a bank, an intervening fosse and an outer bank. The inner bank of earth and stone is low and rounded. The banks have been levelled from NNE-NE, where the perimeter is marked instead by a low rise. There is a fairly well preserved intervening fosse and an outer bank at NW. • WM025-057 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated on a slight rise, in gently undulating pasture, with good views in all directions. A ringfort (WM025-056----) lies c. 145m to NE and an enclosure (WM025-055----) lies c. 180m to WNW. Bivallate ringfort described as a roughly circular-shaped area (diam. 38m) enclosed by an inner bank, an intervening fosse and an outer bank. A causewayed entrance is located at ENE where there is a gap (Wth at top 5.8m; basal Wth 3.4m) in the inner bank, a causeway (Wth at top 2.2m; overall Wth 6.8m; max. H c. 1.2m) across the fosse and a gap (Wth at top 8.6m; basal Wth 6.7m) in the outer bank. The earth and stone inner bank is substantial and has definite traces of an internal stone facing. There are several disturbance gaps in the inner bank. A wide and waterlogged fosse is present from ENE-E-S-W-N which is absent from N-NE-ENE. There are the remains of an outer bank only visible from NW-N and from ENE-S-W. The fosse and outer bank are obscured by a modern field fence which flanks the base of the inner bank from N-NE-ENE. There are the remains of a stone facing on the N side of the inner gap and large stones scattered on the opposite side of the same gap. The interior rises gently from the perimeter to the centre and is featureless. Monument is visible as a roughly circular-shaped earthwork on oblique aerial photograph (CUCAP AYR024) taken 11/07/1969.   Description

  Situated on the SE side of a slight rise, in gently undulating and hilly pasture with good views to E and S. Monument described in 1971 as a roughly D-shaped area (dims. 35m N-S; approx. 33m E-W) enclosed by the remains of a substantial bank of earth and stone with traces of an external fosse with possible entrance gap (Wth 3.2m) at S. The bank has several slight disturbance gaps and the fosse is best preserved at S. A modern laneway skirts the bank at NW, where it obscures the fosse, and leads to an abandoned house outside the bank at W. The interior has a gentle ESE-facing slope and the surface is uneven with slight scarps and depressions. Monument described in 1977 as levelled with no surface remains visible.
