- WM039-002 Ringfort - rath
Description
Not depicted as an antiquity on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map but shown as an oval-shaped field in the the SE corner of a larger rectangular field. In pasture, on top of a low E-W ridge with good views to N, E and W. Ballykilmore Lough visible 55m to the N. Ringfort (WM039-003----) 150m to NNE. Roughly oval-shaped area (diam. 30m N-S; 48m E-W) defined by a low earth and stone bank with traces of a narrow fosse only visible at SW which may not be an original feature. No entrance feature visible. The enclosing feature consists of a single earth and stone bank visible at E and W. At N and S the enclosing bank changes into a double bank with intervening fosse of post-1700 appearance. The interior of the ringfort is uneven. Description
In pasture, on the end of a low ridge with good views of the surrounding countryside. Ballykilmore Lough 100m to the SW and Daly's Lough 80m to the E. Ringfort (WM039-002----) 150m to SSW. Circular-shaped area (diam. 28.5m N-S; 27m E-W) defined by a poorly preserved earth and stone bank which is only visible at E, elsewhere has been reduced to a scarp. No entrance feature visible. The interior of the ringfort is uneven. A small quarry has defaced the W edge of the monument. A 19th century field boundary running N-S intersects the E edge of the ringfort which has caused defacement of the bank on this side. This N-S field boundary is not indicated on the 1837 ed. Description
Holy well located S of the village of Tyrrellspass in a small woodland. Known locally as St. Stephen's Well. Tyrrellspass Castle (WM039-001----) located 300m to the NW. Circular pool (diam. 0.9m; D 1m) of water lined with stones and is accessed by a series of four steps leading down to the water. Description
Semi-detached four-bay Roman Catholic church, built c.1858, heavily altered and remodeled, c.1970, with new entrance front/porch added to northeast. Pitched natural slate roof with cast-iron rainwater goods and a wrought-iron cross finial above entrance gable (northeast). Pebbledashed walls over rendered plinth with clasping buttresses, built of dressed limestone, between window openings to nave. Concrete brick cladding, c.1970, to entrance front (northeast). Pointed-arched window openings with modern stained glass to nave openings. Modern triple-light window to entrance front with three graded lancet windows to chancel gable with Mayer of Munich-type stained glass. Square-headed doorcase to entrance front with timber double doors and overlight above. Mosaic panel over main doorcase depicting the stoning of St. Stephen. Simple interior, reordered c.1970, with open kingpost roof, marble altar goods and a plain gallery above entrance gable. Set back from road in own grounds with presbytery adjoining to southwest and a freestanding cast-iron belfry to the north. Main entrance to northeast with cut stone gate. Associated graveyard to the east/northeast.

Inscription 'Glenfield & Kennedy Ltd, Kilmarnock' to shaft. Horizontal pull lever now missing. Located in the southwest of the centre of Tyrrellspass adjacent to main road.

End-of-terrace four-bay two-storey house, built c.1830. Pitched tiled roof with cast-iron rainwater goods and a single rendered chimneystack. Roughcast rendered walls over ruled-and-line rendered plinth with raised block quoins to corners at either end. Square-headed window openings with cut stone sills and replacement windows. Round-headed doorcase, offset close to centre of front façade, with cut limestone surrounds with fluted keystone over, and a timber panelled door with spoke fanlight above. Road-fronted. Located a short distance to the southwest of the centre of Tyrrellspass. Two-storey random rubble outbuilding to rear (southwest) with pitched slate roof and a flight concrete steps flanked by iron railings to first floor opening.

End-of-terrace seven-bay two-storey house, built c.1820, with public house to ground floor on eastern side c.1950. Now in use as a public house with private accommodation over. Originally two (possibly three) separate properties, now conjoined with five-bay pubfront to east and two-bay house to west end. Pitched natural slate roof above pubfront, artificial slate to western end above house, with rendered chimneystacks and terracotta chimney pots. Pebbledashed walls over smooth rendered two-stage plinth with raised block quoins to corner at west end. Smooth rendered fascia with raised lettering and smooth rendered stallrisers to pubfront. Square-headed window openings with six-over-six pane timber sliding sash windows to first floor openings and a single eight-over-eight pane timber sliding sash window to west end of ground floor, Cut stone sills throughout. Square-headed fixed pane windows to pubfront with timber casement windows over. Round-headed doorcase to house at west end with cut stone block-and-start surround with projecting keystone over, replacement timber panelled door and a timber spoke fanlight above. Two cut stone steps to front of doorcase with cast-iron bootscrapers to either side. Road-fronted. Located just to the southwest of the centre of Tyrrellspass.

Description
Semi-detached four-bay two-storey former house, built c.1840, with modern shopfronts to either end (southwest and northeast). Later in use as a Royal Irish Constabulary barracks, c.1910. Now in use as a shop and post office with accommodation above. Pitched natural slate roof with projecting eaves course, cast-iron rainwater goods and a central rendered chimneystack with terracotta chimney pots. Ruled-and-line rendered walls over smooth rendered plinth with quoins to corners. Square-headed window openings with projecting keystone over, cut stone sills and replacement windows. Central round-headed doorcase with cut stone block-and-start surround with plain fanlight and a timber panelled door. Modern shopfront to west with central square-headed doorcase flanked by fixed-pane shop windows. Square-headed doorcase to east end with glazed surrounds giving access to post office. Road-fronted in a prominent position in the centre of Tyrrellspass, overlooking The Crescent. Outbuildings to the rear (southeast).

Pitched natural slate roof with clay ridge tiles and rendered chimneystacks to either end. Pebbledashed walls over smooth rendered plinth with smooth rendered strips to corners at either end. Square-headed window openings with two-over-two pane timber sliding sash windows, architraved stucco surrounds and cut stone sills. Square-headed doorcase to centre with timber panelled door with overlight and architraved stucco surround. Concrete step to front. Single-storey extension to southeast with pitched slate roof and rendered walls. Road-fronted on sloping site overlooking The Crescent in the centre of Tyrrellspass.

Pitched natural slate roof and two rendered chimneystacks (above original entrances) with clay chimney pots. Pebbledashed walls over smooth rendered plinth with raised block quoins to either end. Square-headed window openings with rendered reveals, cut stone sills and two-over-two pane timber sliding sash windows. Square-headed doorcase to centre of house to southwest end with rendered reveals and glazed timber door, doorcase to northeast property now infilled. Set slightly back from road with rubble limestone to front (northwest). Located in a prominent position overlooking The Crescent in the centre of Tyrrellspass.

Semi-detached three-bay single-storey house, built c.1800 and altered c.1870, with single-storey return to the rear (southeast). Pitched natural slate roof with clay ridge tiles and cast-iron rainwater goods. Rendered chimneystack to the southwest gable with elongated clay chimney pot and a massive rubble limestone chimneystack to northeast end shared with adjacent ruinous property. Roughcast rendered walls over smooth rendered plinth with block quoins to corners at either end. Square-headed window openings with decorative rendered surrounds, cut stone sills and one-over-one pane timber sliding sash windows. Square-headed doorcase to centre with rendered reveals, replacement timber panelled door and plain overlight over. Road-fronted with wrought-iron gate to southwest giving access to rear. Located in a prominent position towards the northeast end of Tyrrellspass overlooking The Crescent.

Detached four-bay single-storey house with attic storey, built c.1820 and extensively altered c.1880, with projecting flat-roofed three-bay single-storey porch to entrance front (northeast) and return to rear to east end. Pitched natural slate roof with two rendered chimneystacks and cast-iron rainwater goods. Four dormer windows to entrance front with decorative bargeboards over. Ruled-and-line rendered walls with applied rendered/stucco decoration, including decorative plinth with incised panels and quoins to corners. Projecting porch to front has 'belt-buckle' quoins to corners and a decorative cornice with dentils. Square-headed window openings with plain rendered surrounds, cut stone sills and replacement windows. Central square-headed doorcase to porch with plain rendered surround and replacement door. Set back from the main road in own grounds with boundary wall to front (northwest) with render/stucco decoration and wrought-iron gate. Located to the northeast of Tyrrellspass adjacent to main Dublin-Galway road.
