• WM003-004 Moated site
  Description

  Situated on a low natural rise of ground surrounded by wet poorly drained land with stream 80m to W. Rock of Curry and the Hill of Mael visible 1.8km and 2.8km to the ENE respectively. Cropmark of levelled enclosure visible on Digital Globe aerial photographs taken November 2011. Old cultivation ridges roughly aligned E-W can be seen running across surface of levelled monument. Depicted as a roughly rectangular-shaped enclosure on 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map. An OPW report from 1966 described the monument as a 'rectangular enclosure with slight bank and old thorn trees on bank. An oldish field or garden on edge of long (alt 200-300 ft) with shelter belt of thorns. Not ancient in appearance but not now used as a separate field’ (OPW Field Report 08/12/1966).   Description

  Situated atop low natural rise on poorly drained grassland. No surface remains visible of enclosure depicted on 1912 ed. OS 6-inch map but not indicated on 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map. On the latter map a house site is indicated roughly in the area where the earthwork is depicted. • WM003-030 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated on a low natural hillock on a N-S ridge with good views of undulating countryside. Rock of Curry and Hill of Mael visible to the NE & ENE respectively. A large sub-circular area (approx. diam. 57m N-S; 51m E-W) enclosed by an earthen bank with traces of an external fosse visible only from E-SE. No clear entrance feature visible. Several gaps in the bank all of which appear to modern in appearance. The enclosing bank is best preserved from SE-E-SW. Evidence of intern stone facing of bank at W and N. The interior slopes from the centre to the E. Old cultivation ridges can be seen running E-W across the interior of the monument. Well preserved cultivation ridges and small field system of uncertain antiquity can be seen immediately N and NW of ringfort. • WM003-033 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated on a NW facing slope in average pasture land. L-shaped field boundary depicted in this area on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map. Present remains consist of a roughly circular area (approx. diam. 40m N-S) enclosed by the slight remains of a wide low earth and stone bank with wide shallow external fosse. A field fence and old roadway intersect the perimeter of the earthwork from SSE-S-SSW destroying the bank and fosse.   Description

  Situated on a low natural rise in fairly well drained pasture land, with moderate views of the surrounding countryside. Rock of Curry and Hill of Mael visible from the site. D-shaped area (diam. 43m N-S) with straight side at W enclosed by a poorly preserved earth and stone bank with slight traces of a shallow fosse and external bank only visible from SW-W-N-NE. Entrance gap at SE. The interior is quite uneven with a gentle rise towards the centre. From the centre the ground slopes quite appreciably to the bank at E, S & SE.   Description

  Situated on a low natural rise of ground with good views to N, E and SE. No surface remains visible. Depicted as a small circular enclosure on 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map and annotated as 'Fort' on the 1837 OS Fair Plan map. Not depicted on revised editions of the OS 6-inch maps. Site probably levelled between 1837 and 1912 edition of the OS 6-inch maps.
