• WM003-085 Hilltop enclosure
  Description

  Situated on a hilltop now covered in trees. A circular shaped earthwork is depicted on Carne Hill on an estate map dating from 1798 (NLI, MS 21.F.48 (005) ). An unusually large circular area (approx. diam. 68m N-S; 66m E-W) enclosed by two earth and stone banks with a slight, wide intervening fosse. The perimeter of the monument has been disturbed by quarrying from W-N. The interior is uneven, and slopes from N to S and E. Compiled by: Frank Coyne and Caimin O'Brien Date of upload: 23 May 2017

• WM003-089 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated on gently sloping grassland with good views to S on the demesne lands of Pakenham Hall located 890m to SE. Ringfort (WM003-090---) 260m to E. Depicted as an irregular shaped tree plantation and not as an antiquity on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map. An unusually large sub-circular shaped area (approx. diam. 53m E-W) enclosed by two earthen banks and an intervening fosse. The inner bank is wide and low; the fosse is wide and deep and has been disturbed by quarrying at NE. The outer bank has been partially levelled. • WM003-090 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated on a slight rise of ground on the landscaped demesne of Pakenham Hall located 670m to SSE. Ringfort (WM003-089---) 260m to W. Depicted as a rectangular shaped tree plantation and not as an antiquity on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map. A sub-circular shaped area (approx. diam. 26m NE-SW) enclosed by an earth and stone bank and a wide external fosse. The fosse is visible from E-SW, and joins a more recent field fence at W. A narrow rectangular enclosure, probably part of a tree plantation is visible outside the monument to the S. It is possible that this ringfort was altered to form a tree-ring, part of the landscaping works associated with the nearby Pakenham Hall.
