• WM001-017 Castle - motte
  Description

  Situated on a low rising ground. Site covered in scrub and trees making detailed examination impossible. Present remains consist of a very high steep-sided flat-topped earthen mound (base diam. c. 46m; top diam. 18m) the base of which is enclosed by a fosse with traces of an external bank visible at E. The base of the mound is damaged by later walls and trenches which have been dug into the base of the earthwork. See attached profile of monument surveyed and drawn by the ASI. • WM001-018 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated on top of a slight natural rise surrounded by gently undulating land of good pasture. Excellent views to the W and N. Castle site (WM001-019----) located 280m to NNE. Unusually large roughly circular-shaped raised area (diam. 57m NE-SW; 55m NW-SE) defined by a poorly preserved earth and stone bank best preserved from WSW-W-WNW where it has been incorporated into a modern field boundary running N-S, and elsewhere reduced to a scarp with external fosse only visible from NW-N. No entrance feature visible. The interior slopes unevenly from SW to NE. To the east of the centre there is a low rocky outcrop. Faint traces of cultivation ridges running NNE-SSW across the monument. See attached profile of monument surveyed and drawn by the ASI. • WM001-019 Castle - unclassified
  Description

  Site of levelled castle is marked at the wrong location on the revised editions of the OS 6-inch and 25-inch maps. Castle site of is marked on the first ed. OS 6-inch map in an area occupied by a cluster of buildings and not in the field to the SW where the Ordnance Survey have mistakenly shown the location of the castle site. No surface remains visible of any castle in area marked on six-inch map. In 1837 the castle was described in the Ordnance Survey memoranda as 'an Old Castle in Ruins' (SMR file). This castle may have been located in the area where a cluster of buildings are depicted on the first ed. OS 6-inch map. A small square shaped building depicted on this map may have been the castle building mentioned in the OS memoranda. The area where the castle is marked on the revised 1911 ed. OS 25-inch map was visited by the ASI in 1981 when land reclamation works were being carried out in the area marked on the OS map. At this time the ASI survey recorded that the site was visited 'while bulldozing operations to remove field fence were in progress. There is no indication in the disturbed band of earth of the former existence of a castle there. A no. of stones are visible but none of these appear to be building stones. There are no traces of walls or foundations visible. The landowner informed me that he has ploughed all the fields in the immediate vicinity with a horse-drawn plough in the past & no trace of a castle has ever turned up’ (ASI Field Report 24/02/1981). • WM001-020 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated on a low natural rise of ground in well drained pasture-land with good views of the surrounding countryside. Roughly oval-shaped area (diam. 34.5m E-W; 37m N-S) enclosed by a well preserved earth and stone bank with wide deep external fosse best preserved at N, with causewayed entrance gap (top Wth 7m; base Wth 0.9m) at ESE. The interior of the ringfort slopes very slightly from NW to SE with a rise towards the centre. Outside the fosse from S-SW there is a narrow almost level zone of ground and outside this is a steep scarp-like feature which merges into the natural slopes of the natural rise at both ends.
