• WM012-156 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated on the summit of a ridge in undulating grassland, with good views in all directions. The road which marks the townland boundary with Toberaquill lies 80m to W. A sub-circular shaped area (approx. diam. 40m N-S; 35m E-W) enclosed by a low earthen bank (H 0.3m) and a shallow external fosse (Wth 1.75m) with a possible entrance gap (Wth 3.6m) at NE. The E quadrant and a large part of the interior has been destroyed by quarrying. A field fence running NE-SW intersects the perimeter of the monument at W and a second field fence running ESE-WSW intersects the perimeter at S.   Description

  Depicted as a circular shaped enclosure on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map. The monument is not depicted on the revised 1911 ed. OS 25-inch map where only the curving field bank at S indicates the location of the levelled monument. The curving field boundary visible from S-W follows line of enclosing bank of ringfort which has been levelled elsewhere and is clearly visible on Digital Globe aerial photograph taken November 2011.   Description

  Situated on a natural rise in marshy ground. Depicted on the 1837 OS fair Plan map as a circular shaped enclosure. An OPW field report from 1968 described the monument as an enclosure situated on a natural rise of ground possibly an esker in marshy land. Slight traces of possible house foundations suggest a farmyard of uncertain age. No definite shape to enclosure (approx. diam. c. 44 paces across). A certain amount of old quarrying around base of hillock. Slight scarping of edge (c. 4-5’ high) in places. No trace of an external fosse. Monument was levelled between shortly after this date as part of land reclamation works. No surface remains visible of levelled monument.   Description

  Situated on E facing slope of a prominent rise in gently undulating gras-land, with good views to E. A slightly raised circular shaped area (approx. diam. 25m N-S; 24m E-W) enclosed by a poorly preserved earthen bank and a shallow external fosse. There is an entrance gap (Wth 1.9m) and a slight causeway across the fosse at ESE. Traces of cultivation ridges are visible in the interior, which rises slightly towards the centre.   Situated on the lower S facing slope of a ridge in grassland. Ringfort (WM012-197---) 35m to NE. Outline of levelled monument visible on Digital Globe aerial photograph taken November 2011. Described in 1981 as a sub-circular shaped area (approx. diam. 25m NW-SE) enclosed by a low earthen bank and wide fosse. The bank is best preserved at W (max. H 1.25m) and is fragmentary in places elsewhere. A possible house site (WM012-198001-) is visible inside the bank in the E quadrant. • WM013-075 Enclosure - large enclosure
  Description

  Situated on the lower SSE face of a ridge with fairly good views of the surrounding countryside. Poorly drained land which has been reclaimed located to E with partially drained bogland to NW. An unusually large oval shaped area (approx. diam. 84m NW-SE; 64m NE-SW) enclosed by a fragmentary bank of earth and stone with a shallow external fosse visible from SW-NW. A lime kiln has been built on the perimeter at SW. Traces of cultivation ridges are visible running NNW-SSE across the interior, which slopes gradually from N-S.
