• WM030-076 Earthwork
  Description

  Situated on the summit of an esker ridge, in undulating pasture, with good views in all directions. Depicted on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map as an oval-shaped earthwork at a spot height of 356ft/109m OD. Not depicted on the revised 1910 ed. OS 25-inch map. Monument is obscured by woodland on Digital Globe aerial photography. • WM030-077 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated on a small rise, in undulating pasture, with good views to N, E and SE, overlooked by ridges to W and NW. Depicted on the revised 1910 ed. OS 25-inch map as an oval-shaped earthwork. Monument described in 1979 as a roughly oval-shaped area (dims. 28m N-S; 23m E-W) defined by an inner bank and an outer scarp. The inner bank is present from SE-S-W-NW and is reduced to a scarp from NW-N-E-SE. It may have been straightened from NE-E-SE when the perimeter of the monument was cut by a public road running NNW-SSE. A short portion of a low stone outer bank is present from SE-S and this continues as an outer scarp from S-W-N. This outer scarp has traces of a rough dry-stone facing in places which may be a later feature. There are quarry depressions outside the perimeter at S and SE. There is no sign of an entrance. The interior is uneven and appears to have been disturbed in the relatively recent past. Monument is visible as a partially tree-lined earthwork on Digital Globe aerial photography. • WM030-078 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated on the upper S-facing slope of a ridge, in pasture, with good views in all directions. Depicted on the revised 1910 ed. OS 25-inch map as an oval-shaped tree-lined enclosure. Monument described in 1979 as a much disturbed oval-shaped area enclosed by a bank and external fosse with a later field boundary. The outer fosse survives from SW-W-N-NE but is much disturbed by a later field fence which encloses the perimeter all around. A laneway is located outside the field fence from NE-E. There are some trees on the edge of the perimeter indicating that the ringfort was modified into a much later tree-ring. The interior has a steep S-facing slope and there are traces of cultivation ridges running N-S across the W portion. The surface is very uneven and appears to have been quarried in the E and SE quadrants. There is a good deal of stone scattered on the surface of the perimeter including a sod-covered deposit dumped just inside the bank at SSE.
