• WM002-022 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated on the W end of a steep narrow E-W ridge surrounded by relatively low lying very gentle undulating land of poor to good quality pasture. Land immediately outside fort tends to be waterlogged. Good views in all directions from centre of ringfort. Monument not indicated on 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map. An oval shaped area (diam. 41m) enclosed by a poorly preserved earthen bank with trace of an external fosse visible at E and W only, possible causewayed entrance (Wth 1.75m) at E. On the S side a modern field fence encroaches on the site. The interior is very uneven with disturbance caused by gravel quarrying at S. • WM002-023 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated on low rise of poorly drained land with stream immediately to W. Ringfort (WM002-022---) 175m to NNE, ringfort (WM002-021----) 85m to SW. partially depicted on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map where a quarry is shown on the W side of the earthwork. A second quarry is also depicted a few metres to the S of the earthwork on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map. On the revised 1911 ed. OS 25-inch map a rectangular building is shown in the SSW quadrant of the earthwork in the area where the quarry was marked on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map. The enclosing element on the W half of monument has been quarried away. Present remains consist of a large sub-triangular shaped area (dims. 72m NNW-SSE; 54m WSW-ENE) defined by an earth and stone bank (Wth 6-7.8m; int. H 0.3-1.2m; ext. H 1.9m) visible from N-E-SSE only elsewhere it has been reduced to a scarp (H 0.8-1.4m) and external fosse visible from N-E-SE only. No entrance feature visible. A rectangular-shaped flat-topped mound (13m NNW-SSE; 10.4m WSW-NNE; H 0.8-1m) in the W quadrant of the interior could be post 1700 upcast from quarrying activities along W edge of monument. There is a small rectangular enclosure (house site) (WM002-023001-) on the upper edge of the scarp on the N. In the NW quadrant close to the scarp a small sub-rectangular area delimited by an embankment of earth and stone may possible represent a house site. In the N quadrant a low earth bank extends across the interior as a form of partition delimiting a sub-rectangular area. Old cultivation ridges in evidence in SE quadrant of interior.   Description

• WM002-024001 Hut site
  Description

  Depicted as a D-shaped earthwork on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map. Situated on a low NE facing slope of low rise on flat pasture with bogland now planted with trees nearby to NE. Ringfort (WM002-025----) 160m to SSE. D-shaped ringfort (WM002-024----) with a very low artificially raised platform of irregular plan in SW quadrant of interior which may be a house site. There are two old ditch and bank features extending NE from the N & NE sides of site. The whole SE side of the site has been truncated by a modern ditch and field bank.
