• WM013-052 Castle - unclassified
  Description

  Situated on low natural hillock of rock outcrop with Crosserdree church (WM013-053----) and graveyard (WM013-053001-) 75m to SE. Castle ruin shown on Larkin’s 1808 map of Co. Westmeath. Not depicted as a castle site on any edition of the OS 6-inch maps. Castle site marked by a rectangular shaped area (30m NW-SE; 15m NE-SW) partially covered in scrub which is enclosed by a low earth and stone bank, with a number of low banks in the vicinity. The E face of the hillock has been partially quarried into possibly during the 19th century. Earthworks in field to S consist of cultivation ridges and possible old watercourse. Linear earthwork in field to W may be remains of an old roadway of uncertain antiquity. Rock outcrop which displays evidence of quarrying in field 130m to W. • WM013-053 Church
  Description

  Possible castle site (WM013-052----) in field to 85m WNW. In centre of sub-rectangular shaped graveyard (WM013-053001-). Poorly preserved ivy-covered remains of a rectangular church (ext. dims. 12.4m x 6.2m; wall T 0.95m) aligned WNW-ESE with rectangular annexe (ext. dims. 4.7m WNW-ESE x 2.8m N-S; wall T 0.95m) at NE angle. The E and W walls of the church are indicated by low wall footings only. A short section of the E end of the N and S walls (L 3.7m) survives upstanding (H 2-2.5m) along with a short section of the W end of the N wall (L 2.2m) and the N end of the W wall (L 1.3m). A low flat-headed doorway (Wth 0.62m x H 0.65m) at E end of N wall of the church gives access to small rectangular room or annexe on the NE angle. A short section of the E wall of this annexe remains upstanding with evidence of a blocked up window ope, only the wall footings survive of the N and W walls survive. A single light flat head window survives in the E end of the S wall of the church. A fragment of a broken medieval font (WM013-053003-) is visible lying on the surface of the ground in the centre of the church. To the S, E and NE of the graveyard are a series of earthworks which could be contemporaneous with the church and castle. Meandering earthwork in the field to the N appear to be old watercourse, however a double linear earthwork in this field could be the remains of an old roadway leading to the possible castle site and church.   Description

  Trapezoidal-shaped graveyard (approx. dims. 41m N-S x 46m E-W) enclosed by a low earthen tree-lined bank with poorly preserved dry stone wall external facing with entrance gate at W end of S boundary. Medieval Crosserdree church ruins (WM013-053----) and font (WM013-053003-) in centre of graveyard. Overgrown graveyard covered in scrub contains a few headstones dating from the 18th century onwards mainly concentrated in SE quadrant, low rows of uninscribed stones also served as gravemarkers. According to Swan (1988, 26) the curving form of the E section of the graveyard boundary wall possibly indicated the presence of an Early Christian ecclesiastical enclosure (WM013-053002-).   Medieval church ruins (WM013-053---) of Crosserdree stands in centre of graveyard (WM013-053001-) which contains memorials of post-medieval date. The curving form of the E section of the graveyard boundary wall possibly indicates the presence of an Early Christian ecclesiastical enclosure (Swan 1988, 26). • WM013-053003 Font
  Description

  In centre of Crosserdree graveyard (WM013-053001-) are the remains of a poorly preserved ivy-covered church ruins (WM013-053----). A fragment of a broken medieval font is partially visible embedded into the soil in the centre of the church located 2.2m N of the S wall and 5m E of the W wall. The limestone font (H 0.38m; ext. diam. 0.66m; T 0.11-0.15m) consisted of a circular shaped vessel with slightly tapering sides, of which only half now survives. • WM013-082 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated on the S facing slope of a ridge with good views to the SW. Trivallate ringfort consisting of a sub-circular shaped area (approx. diam. 48m N-S; 42m E-W) enclosed by three earth and stone banks, and two well defined intervening fosses. The inner bank is low and poorly preserved and has been dug into in the N quadrant. The middle bank is disturbed from NW-NE, and the outer bank is visible from S-W only. From W-N all that remains of the outer bank is a core of boulders. There is an entrance gap (Wth 3.4m) in the inner bank, a causeway across the inner fosse (Wth 3.4m; H 0.35m) and a gap in the middle bank (Wth 2.8m) at E. • WM013-083 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated on N facing slope of a low ridge, overlooked by slightly higher ground on all sides. The road which forms the townland boundary with Tevrin lies 70m to W. Depicted on the 1838 ed. OS Fair Plan map as a small oval-shaped earthwork that is annotated as a ‘fort’. Local information suggests that this site was levelled in the latter half of the nineteenth century.
