Description
Situated on a gentle S-facing slope, in pasture. Depicted as a ‘Ruin’ on Larkin’s 1808 map of County Westmeath (NLI, MS 46,580). Not depicted on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map or the revised 1913 ed. OS 25-inch map. Monument described in 1983 as several rectangular structures defined by a series of sod-covered wall footings are visible in area marked on OS 6-inch map which represents the remains of the 'Ruins' depicted on Larkin's 1808 map. The earthworks are arranged around a small rectangular-shaped area. Adjoining the wall footings are a number of low earth and stone banks some of which form irregular-shaped enclosures. These banks extend mainly westward to a second group of irregular series of grass-covered wall footings which mark the site of a further range of rectangular structures. This second group is not as clearly defined as the first. Grass-covered wall footings are not visible today on Digital Globe aerial photography. - WM019-012 Crannog
Description
Monument described by Victor Buckley in 1982 as a small crannóg (approx. dims. 14m E-W; 13m N-S) on the NW shore of McEvoy’s Lough which rises (H 0.8-0.9m) above the surrounding boggy ground. It is situated approx. 10m to N of the present lake edge and approx. 18m to S of the original shoreline. Slight traces of a causeway to the N may be 19th century. There are two Oak (Quercus) timbers from the palisade visible on the S edge of the crannog: One is 30cm in diameter and stands 40cm above the ground and the other is 20cm in diameter and only protrudes slightly. There is evidence of disturbance within the interior derived from tree roots in the W quadrant and by the construction of a pump house in the E quadrant, sometime during the later 19th century. The pump itself has been sunk into the centre of the crannog. Described by O'Sullivan (2004, 112-3) as 'Located on northwest shore of McEvoy’s Lough, a small lake associated with the larger lakes, Lough Drin and Slevin’s Lough to east and south. This crannog is a circular mound (dims. 13m N-S x 14m E-W; H 0.9m) of earth, located in marshy ground about 18m from original shore (10m from present shore) at northwest end of McEvoy’s Lough. The mound is overgrown and has an irregular surface, with a possible causeway leading towards the dryland to the north. There is a possible palisade on the southern edge, represented by two substantial wooden posts (20-30cm diameter) facing outwards towards the lake. The site was disturbed by the building on it of a 19th century pump-house.' Compiled by: Caimin O'Brien based on details provided by Aidan O'Sullivan. Date of upload: 10 March 2017
- WM019-037 Ringfort - rath
Description
Situated on a small steep hillock, in gently undulating, rough pasture. Depicted on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map as a circular-shaped earthwork. Monument described in 1970 as a roughly circular-shaped area (diam. 36m) enclosed by a bank, intervening fosse with traces of an outer bank. A gap (Wth at top 7m; basal Wth 3.8m) at E may represent the entrance, although there is no definite trace of a causeway. The fosse and outer bank have been removed either side of this. The enclosing inner bank is high and steep and the intervening fosse (Wth at top 3.9m; basal Wth 2m; D 0.35m) is wide and deep with a flat base. There are very slight traces of an outer bank (Wth 2.3m; H 0.5m) which is almost indistinguishable from the surrounding hillslope. The western half of the interior is occupied by a modern hay barn. The remains of a partially quarried, semi-circular annexe adjoins the outer bank at N. Monument is visible on Digital Globe aerial photography as a tree-planted earthwork. See attached rough sketch plan of monument surveyed and drawn by the ASI in 1972 Compiled by: Alison McQueen, Vera Rahilly and Caimin O’Brien Date of upload: 03 April 2019
- WM019-038 Ringfort - rath
Description
Situated on a rise (106m/348ft OD), in undulating pasture. Depicted on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map as a circular-shaped earthwork (approx. dims. 20m NW-SE; 17m NE-SW), annotated ‘Fort’ on the OS Fair Plan Map. Marked as an OS spot height on the revised 1913 ed. OS 25-inch map. Monument described in 1980 as the remains of an oval-shaped ringfort enclosed by a bank that can be traced from W-NW-N-NE. The interior is obscured by dense vegetation, however the ground evidently falls away sharply in the S and E quadrants, where it has been quarried. There is a wide, grass covered depression immediately to S and SE of the monument which may be a backfilled quarry. Monument is visible on Digital Globe aerial photography as a partially tree-planted earthwork. Compiled by: Alison McQueen, Vera Rahilly and Caimin O’Brien Date of upload: 03 April 2019
