• WM024-042 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated on a slight rise, in gently undulating pasture with stream c. 75m to NE. Ringfort (WM024-041----) lies c. 168m to NE. Monument described in 1971 as a much disturbed suboval-shaped area (diam. 36m) defined by the remains of a bank visible from SE-S-W-NNW where it is almost reduced to a scarp and it has been removed from NNW-N-E-SE. There is no definite trace of an external fosse. A gap (Wth at top 3.8m; basal Wth 1.7m) at SSE may represent an entrance. The surface of the interior is very uneven and there is an irregular-shaped disturbance depression inside the upper edge of the scarp at SSW. In the centre of the interior are the remains of a large house site (WM024-042001-). The site is encroached by other banks and scarps in the vicinity of the exterior.   Description

  Situated on a slight rise, in gently undulating pasture with a stream c. 75m to NE. In the centre of a ringfort (WM024-042----) are the remains of a subrectangular-shaped house site (dims. 6.9m NNW-SSE; 6m ENE-WSW) defined by an earthen bank. The bank is higher on the inside than the outside due to the interior being sunken below the external ground level. An entrance gap (Wth 1.2m) at SSE end is flanked by two large stones. • WM024-081 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated on a low rise, in gently undulating pasture, with good views to S, W and N and overlooked by higher ground to E. Monument described in 1971 as a subcircular shaped area (dims. 37m N-S; 31.5m E-W) enclosed by a bank and external fosse. The bank is high and has almost been reduced to a scarp. It is disturbed by quarrying and has several cattle gaps, however a wider gap (Wth at top 5.7m; basal Wth 2.5m) at SE may represent the entrance. A modern stone wall running NW-SE extends just outside the scarp from N-NE. There are slight traces of an external fosse visible from NE-E-S-W-N. The interior has a general ESE-facing slope. • WM024-082 Ringfort - unclassified
  Description

  Situated on top of a slight rise, in gently undulating pasture, with good views in all directions, except to E, where the ground rises from the site. Annotated ‘Fort’ and depicted on the 1837 OS Fair Plan map as a circular-shaped earthwork. Levelled monument described in 1971 as a roughly circular-shaped area (dims. 25.5m NW-SE; 24.7m NE-SW) defined by a distinctive narrow zone of vegetation (Wth 2.6m) which represents the remains of the levelled bank. There are vague suggestions of a backfilled fosse (Wth at top 3.8m; basal Wth 1.2m; D 0.1m) outside this zone. Large stones which have recently been deposited in the S corner of the field to the W may have come from the site. The interior has a slight SSW-facing slope.   Description

  Situated on a slight SW-facing slope, in gently undulating pasture. Monument described in 1971 as an oval-shaped area (dims. 25.9m E-W) enclosed by a bank with slight traces of an external fosse. The low bank is almost reduced to a scarp and is slightly defaced in several places where the gravel composition of the bank is visible. There is a large gap at NE and SW and a very wide gap at ESE.   Description

  Situated on a low rise, in gently undulating pasture, with good views in all directions. Levelled monument described in 1971 and 1978 as a roughly circular-shaped area (dims. 25m NW-SE) defined by the remains of a levelled bank. The interior has a gentle E-facing slope.   Description

  Situated on NE-facing slope, in gently undulating pasture. Monument described in 1971 as an oval-shaped area enclosed by a bank and external fosse. The bank is high and steep and is almost reduced to a scarp with several small disturbance gaps. The fosse is best preserved at S and elsewhere it is either infilled, disturbed or obscured by modern field fences which encroach on the site at NW, N and NE. A much disturbed gap (Wth at top 5.9m; basal Wth 2m) at NE may represent the entrance, although there is no visible trace of a causeway. The interior has a NE-facing slope. • WM024-086 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated on top of a slight rise, in gently undulating pasture. Monument described in 1971 as a subcircular-shaped area (dims. 27.5m N-S) enclosed by a bank and external fosse. The bank is substantial and is approximately twice as high on the outside as it is on the inside. A wide, deep fosse is visible from SW-W-N-E and is very slight from NNE-E. The outer face of the fosse appears to have been steepened in modern times from SW-W-N-NNE, where it has a modern fence along its upper edge. The ground outside the monument has been disturbed from E-S-SW owing to a dwelling and associated haggard abutting from NNE-SW. There is a large disturbance gap in the bank at N. A large gap (Wth at top 6m; basal Wth 2.2m) in the bank at E may represent an entrance. There is no definite trace of a causeway at E, however the ground has been disturbed where the gable-end of the house abuts the monument. The interior is quite uneven with rises and hollows.
