- WM012-140 Ringfort - rath
Description
Situated on SSE facing slope of a ridge, with good views to the W. The stream which marks the townland boundary with Garraree is less then 5m to the SE. Ringfort (WM012-141---) 140m to NE. A modern bungalow now stands on the site of the levelled earthwork as visible on Digital Globe aerial photograph taken November 2011. Depicted on the 1837 ed. OS Fair Plan map as an oval shaped earthwork annotated as ‘fort’. Described in 1970 as almost completely levelled and consisting of a sub-circular shaped area (approx. diam. 35m NW-SE 32m; 35m NE-SW) defined by a scarp sloping slightly to the SE. Description
Situated on the lower S facing slope of a high ridge in hilly grassland. Ringfort (WM012-137---) 90m to NE. Depicted on the 1837 OS Fair Plan map as a circular shaped earthwork annotated as a ‘fort’. Levelled site now only visible as a faint crop mark on Digital Globe aerial photograph taken November 2011. Described in 1970 as a levelled site visible only as a scarp (approx. diam. 39m NW-SE; 47m NE-SW) sloping gradually to S. A field fence running NW-SE ran across the NE quadrant of the site. - WM012-137 Ringfort - rath
Description
Situated on the lower S facing slope of a high ridge in hilly grassland with good views to SE and SW. Ringfort (WM012-136---) 90m to SW. This site has been levelled, and is visible only as a cropmark on the Digital Globe aerial photograph taken November 2011. Described in 1970 as a circular shaped area (approx. diam. 31m NW-SE; 31m NE-SW) enclosed by a two earthen banks and an intervening fosse. The inner bank is low and wide (Wth 6.8m; H 0.4m), the wide fosse (Wth 5.4m) is visible from N-E-SE, and the low outer bank (Wth 1.9m; H 0.52m) arcs around the fosse. There is an entrance gap at S. Traces of cultivation ridges are visible running NNW-SSE across the interior, which slopes to the SSW. A field fence originally ran along the line of the perimeter from S-NW.
