  Description

  The terrier of the Down Survey map of Bunown parish recorded that there stands 'on Bunowen & c. a Castle (WM022-022----) and a mill' which stood on the lands of Pierce Dillon, an Irish papist in 1641 (NLI, MS 723-4). Mill Pond depicted on 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map located in same area as watermill located on 1659 Down Survey map of Kilkenny West barony (NLI, MS 723-4). On this map the mill is depicted with a vertical waterwheel on the gable of a building standing on the bank of a river and annotated as 'mill'. Mill Pond depicted on 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map may be the mill pond belonging to the mill depicted on the Down Survey map. On this map the mill is shown located at the meeting point of the boundary between three townlands which today are represented by Farrannamoreen, Pearsonbrook and Glassan. On the Down Survey map of Bunowen parish the mill is depicted further away from the townland boundary and is possibly located in the area where a 'Corn Mill' is depicted in Glassan on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map. The mill was probably located on the N side of the stream between the mill pond at Pearsonbrook and the Corn Mill at Glassan.   Description

  Detached four-bay single-storey house (with dormer storey), built c.1875, with projecting gable-fronted single-bay single-storey porch to front façade (southeast) having decorative timber barge boards and cast-iron ridge cresting. Modern conservatory to southwest gable end. Now in use as a restaurant. Pitched scalloped natural slate roof with three brick chimneystacks and cast-iron ridge cresting. Three gable-fronted dormer windows to the front façade (southeast) having decorative timber barge boards. Coursed rubble limestone walls with brick dressings to the openings. Segmental-headed window openings with brick and rendered surrounds, timber casement windows and cut stone sills. Round-headed doorcase to projecting porch with cut stone surround, a replacement timber panelled door and having a spoked/radial fanlight over. Set within mature garden enclosed by a rubble limestone wall with wrought-iron gate to road frontage. Located to the north end of Glassan.

  Description

  Detached three-bay two-storey house, built c.1820. Pitched natural slate roof with cast-iron rainwater goods and with a rendered chimneystack to either gable end (north and south) having terracotta pots over. Pebbledashed walls over projecting smooth rendered plinth course. Square-headed window openings with cut stone sills and replacement windows. Central round-headed door opening with cut stone surround, plain glass fanlight and a timber panelled door. Flanking single-storey walls to either gable end of house (north and south) with square-headed pedestrian entrances giving access to the rear. Site slightly back from road with low rendered wall with simple cast-iron gates and railings to the road frontage (east). Located to the centre of Glassan village.

  Description

  Terraced three-bay two-storey former estate worker’s house, built c.1815 and altered c.1900. Now in use as a private dwelling. One of a terrace of similar buildings. Pitched natural slate roof with shared rendered chimneystacks to either end (north and south). Pebbledashed walls over smooth rendered plinth course. Square-headed window openings with cut-stone sills and two-over-two pane timber sash windows. Central square-headed doorway having a carved stone surround with fluted pilasters (with Celtic Revival-style decoration to capitals) supporting plain cornice over. Timber sheeted door with plain glass overlight. Set slightly back and below the level of the road with simple hooped wrought-iron railings to street frontage. Located towards the centre of Glassan village.

• Glassan School, school, 1840–1850 · Regional interest
  Description

  Detached five-bay single-storey school house, dated 1844, having a single-bay gable-fronted entrance porch to the centre of the main façade (east) and single-bay recessed wings to either gable end (north and south). Now in use as a heritage centre and community centre. Pitched natural slate roofs with clay ridge tiles and a central pair of Tudor Gothic style brick chimneystacks (on octagonal plan with cut-stone coping over). Coursed rubble limestone walls with brick dressing to openings, originally rendered. Square-headed window openings having hoodmouldings over and cut stone sills and replacement timber casement windows. Tudor-arched doorcase with brick dressings to projecting porch having replacement timber door. Cut stone plaque above doorway. Located in prominent position to the south of the village of Glassan. Set back from road in own grounds with rubble limestone wall to road-frontage.
