• WM033-054 Souterrain
  Description

  Mainly destroyed souterrain that has been exposed in the S face of a quarry pit located just below the surface. Located at the E end of a gravel ridge running E-W, just below the summit of the ridge on the S facing slope. The top of the ridge has been removed during quarrying operations, uncovering the remains of a souterrain that is currently approx. 7m above the surface of the quarry floor. All that survives of the souterrain are the walls of a slightly rounded chamber (int. Wth 2.3m; L 2.7m) that was aligned N-S. The walls are built with large boulders with slight evidence of corbelling at the top of the walls. Only three lintels survive of the roof of this chamber. • Guilford House, country house, 1750–1770 · Regional interest
  Description

  Detached five-bay two-storey house over raised basement, built c.1760, having two single-bay returns to the rear (north), including a stair return to the centre with hipped artificial slate roof over. Pitched artificial slate roof to main body of building with projecting eaves course and cut stone chimneystacks, recently repointed, to either gable end (east and west). Roughcast lime rendered walls with projecting cut stone quoins to the corners of the entrance façade and a chamfered cut limestone string course at ground floor level. Square-headed window openings with stone sills and replacement windows. Central round-headed doorcase having cut limestone blocked architraved surround with fluted keystone, timber panelled door and a leaded fanlight over. Doorway reached by flight of cut stone steps flanked to either side with rendered walls having cut stone coping over. Set back from road in mature grounds to the north of Tyrrellspass with main entrance gates to the southeast (15403320).

  Description

  Main entrance gates serving Guilford House (15403319), erected c.1800, comprising a pair of ashlar limestone gate piers on square-plan, having pyramidal-shaped capstones over with fluted friezes, supporting a pair of hooped wrought-iron gates. Entrance gates flanked to either side (north and south) by curved sections of rendered quadrant boundary wall (over cut-stone plinth and with cut stone coping over) and terminated by further ashlar limestone gate piers matching the style of the central piers. Sections of rendered boundary wall with cut stone coping run away to the north and the south. Located to the southeast of Guilford House (15403319) and to the north of Tyrrellspass.
