• WM011-127 Moated site
  Description

  Situated on top of a prominent hill surrounded by gently undulating grassland overlooked by nearby hill to the E, with excellent views in all other directions. A raised sub-rectangular shaped area (approx. dims. 33m NW-SE; 20m N-S) enclosed by a well preserved earthen bank and shallow external fosse visible from N-SE. Small entrance gap through fosse and bank on the SE. The interior is sub-divided into two separate enclosures. The larger is sub-rectangular (approx. dims. 23m NW-SE-18m NE-SW) in shape, the smaller is at a lower level to the NW and is also rectilinear (dims. 14m NE-SW; 10m NW-SE) and seems to function as an annexe to the main enclosure. A low bank runs NE-SW across the interior of the main enclosure. A field fence running NNE-SSW intersects the perimeter of the monument from W to S. The trig[onometrical] station marking 380 ft. height as shown on the current OS 6-inch map is not visible on the ground. See attached plan of monument surveyed and drawn by the ASI.   Description

  Situated on a slight rise on the NW face of a prominent hill with extensive views from NW-N-NE. The road which marks the townland boundary with Wattstown is 10m to W and the townland boundary with Ballyedward is 50m to N. Depicted on the 1837 OS Fair Plan map as an oval-shaped enclosure annotated as a ‘fort’ (approx. diam. 36m N-S; 30m E-W). No surface remains visible of levelled monument.   Description

  Situated in undulating pasture. Depicted on Larkin’s 1808 map of County Westmeath as an earthwork (NLI, MS 46,580). Not depicted on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map or the revised 1913 ed. OS 25-inch map. Levelled monument described in 1980 as no surface remains visible. There is now a farm track running ENE-WSW, which appears to run across the centre of the levelled monument. The curve in the field fence that was depicted on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map and the revised 1913 ed. OS 25-inch map to N and E, has been removed to facilitate the trackway. • WM018-015 Burial mound
  Description

  Situated on the shoulder of a hill, with a marshy area at the foot of the hill to W, in pasture, with good views to W. Not depicted on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map, however quarrying evident in same field c. 170m to SE. Located at OS Trig. Station/spot height (99m/324ft OD) on the revised 1913 ed. OS 25-inch map and current ed. OS 6-inch map. Described in 1983 as a low, circular-shaped mound (diam. 12m; H 1-2m) with a small, irregular-shaped raised area (diam. 3-4m) in the centre which has an uneven and quite disturbed appearance. A curvilinear earthen bank extends from the mound at E. Much of the area around the bank has been disturbed, leaving a series of humps and hollows on the surface of the field. There is a deep, broad circular depression on the NW side of the mound that appears to be the result of quarrying. Monument is not clearly visible on Digital Globe aerial photography, however a broad, roughly oval depression (approx. dims. 55m NW-SE; 58m NE-SW) adjoining to W, is clearly evident and probably represents the remains of post-1700 quarrying. Could be the remains of a burial mound or that of a stepped-barrow however the presence of the OS trig. station may suggest that the mound was altered or modified by the OS.
