The refurbishment works in County Westmeath will consist of: the replacement (‘restringing’) of the existing OHL circuit conductor wires; the installation of fibre wrap; replacement of 7 no. steel towers and 73 no. wooden pole-sets/poles with similar dimensions and heights as the existing (replacement towers will be no more than 0.5m taller than existing and replacement pole-sets/poles will be no more than 3m taller than existing); installation of replacement parts on towers and pole-sets; foundation refurbishment / strengthening and recapping / clearing of shear blocks; treatment and painting of towers to be retained; all associated site development works, including temporary works areas; clearance of shear block bases; vegetation maintenance works; ancillary site preparation works, site clearance and levelling at the 1 no. temporary construction compound; temporary works to existing tracks and new temporary access routes to each structure, one of which is within the curtilage of Millerstown House (protected structure RPS No. 020-050), in the townland of Millerstown; and all associated works required to facilitate the Proposed Development A Natura Impact Statement (NIS) will be submitted to the Planning Authority with the application.

• WM020-060 Enclosure
  Description

  Situated on a slight rise, in relatively low-lying wet pasture. Depicted on the revised 1913 ed. OS 25-inch map as a small circular-shaped earthwork (approx. diam. 14m). Monument described in 1970 as an unusually small irregular-shaped area enclosed by an earth and stone bank with traces of an external fosse. The bank is high and steep and has almost been reduced to a scarp. A large stone protrudes from the base of the bank at SE. There is a gap (Wth at top 2.7m; basal Wth 1.2m) in the inner bank and a causeway (Wth at top 2m; overall Wth 5.4m; H 0.4m) over the fosse, at ESE. The interior has a gentle ENE-facing slope and has several slight, natural depressions. Monument is visible today as a tree-lined earthwork on Digital Globe aerial photography.   Description

  Situated on a high ridge, in gently undulating pasture, with good views from N-E-S. Monument described in 1970 as an earthwork enclosed by a bank and scarp. The N half of the monument has been levelled. The bank is visible at W only and the monument is defined by a scarp (H 2.8m) from SE-S-W. The original entrance is not recognisable. The surviving portion of the interior has a gentle ENE-facing slope. A scarp extends from the perimeter at the SE. Monument is visible as a broad D-shaped earthwork (dims. 61m NE-SW; 38m NW-SE) on Digital Globe aerial photography. Compiled by Alison McQueen, Vera Rahilly and Caimin O’Brien. • WM020-139 Burial ground
  Description

  The files of the National Museum of Ireland records that in March 1965 a quantity of human remains found in the townland of Joristown Lower, Co. Westmeath was brought to the National Museum by Mrs Ruth Vandeleur (Cahill & Sikora 2011, vol. 2, 521). The remains had been discovered at a place known locally as 'Firloinn' and had been unearthed by badgers. The site is at the northern end of a long low ridge. According to Mrs Vandeleur, the landowner was re-burying the bones as they were found. The burials appeared to be aligned east/west and no stone settings or grave goods were noted.
