• WM012-021 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated on the N face of the summit of a prominent hill in grassland, overlooked by higher ground to W. A large circular-shaped, slightly raised area (approx. diam. 43m NW-SE; 41m NE-SW) enclosed by a substantial earth and stone bank with a slight fosse and entrance gap (Wth 1.8m) at S. The bank is best preserved from ESE-S-SW (Wth 3.7m; Int. H 0.1m at E), and is fragmentary or levelled to a slight scarp elsewhere. Traces of cultivation ridges are visible running across the interior from NE-SW. A field fence running NNW-SSE originally intersected the monument from NE-E. The site is now almost completely surrounded by a quarry which is visible on Digital Globe aerial photographs taken November 2011. See attached profile of monument surveyed and drawn by the ASI. • WM012-026 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated on the SE face of a high hill in grass-land, overlooking Ballynafid Lake 450m to the SW. Ringfort (WM012-027---) 250m to SE. Depicted on the 1837 OS Fair Plan map as a large circular-shaped enclosure annotated as ‘Rathmharaga’. An unusually large circular-shaped area (approx. diam. 56m N-S; 59m E-W) enclosed by a substantial earthen bank and external fosse. The bank is best preserved from W-N and from SE-SSE and almost completely levelled elsewhere. The fosse is best preserved from WSW-N-NE. Portion of the perimeter has been quarried away at E. There is a possible entrance gap at ESE, which has been widened to provide access for farm machinery. The interior slopes appreciably from NW-SE. The bank has been steepened from N-SE to form part of a moden field boundary. A field fence running NE-SW intersects the monument at W.   Description

  Situated on the SE face of a high ridge in hilly grass-land surrounded by hills. Ringfort (WM012-026---) 250m to NW. This site was almost completely levelled in the 1960s. An unusually large, slightly raised circular-shaped area (approx. diam. 61m WNW-ESE; 62m NNE-SSW) enclosed by a shallow internal fosse and poorly preserved earthen bank with possible entrance gap at ENE. The interior slopes slightly from NW-SE. A field fence running NE-SW intersects the monument at NW. This site is clearly visible on Digital Globe aerial photograph taken November 2011. • WM012-028 Ritual site - holy well
  Description

  Situated on marshy land. Holy Well (WM012-029---) dedicated to St. Michael 50m to NW. Depicted on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map and annotated as ‘Toberslauntia’ (well of health). This well (approx. diam. 1.5m) is enclosed by dry-stone wall. The water flows out into a short drain (L 4m) which eventually empties into a stream. There are no known religious associations. Local information suggests that an inscribed dripstone was removed from this well and taken to Multyfarnham Abbey (WM006-058----). • WM012-030 Barrow - ring-barrow
  Description

  Described by ASI in 1970 as a 'small circular mound (diam. 20m NW-SE) of earth and stones, surrounded by a well defined fosse. The mound has been very disturbed, it has a small depression at the centre and portion of it has been removed at ENE and NE. At S it sprawls across the fosse area. There are suggestions of a low wide earthen bank outside the fosse, but this is not at all well defined. It is situated on the NNE slope of a large high undulating ridge, ENE of a hollow containing a pool. It overlooks flat rushy land to NE alongside the River Gaine. Good view to N' (SMR File 28/04/1970). Depicted on the 1837 Ordnance Survey Fair Plan map as a small circular enclosure delimited by a bank and fosse with trees in the interior and marked as a 'fort'. A second survey in 1980s described the monument as a 'small circular earthen mound, surrounded by a wide shallow fosse with remains of a low outer bank. There is a slight depression in the top of the mound, due to disturbance. Sited on the NNE slope of a high ridge' (SMR File). Surveyed in 2012 and described by McGuinness (2012, 27-8) as following: ‘Site, identified as   a ring-barrow in RMP but marked as a simple mound on OS 6" sheet, was bulldozed by man years   ago (pers. comm. Peter Wallace and Jim Sheridan, who live locally) and no trace of it remains. It was located on summit of low ridge overlooking a tiny lake (kettle-hole) immediately to SW. • WM012-031 Mound
  Description

  Levelled monument, possibly a burial mound situated on flat reclaimed grassland 60m W of the River Gaine and c. 100m N of a levelled mound (WM012-032----). Surveyed in 1972 by the ASI and described as a 'small approx. circular round-topped grass-covered mound of small stones. It may perhaps be related to Mound 9 (WM012-032----). No mortar is visible on the small stones which protrude the grass. Sited to N of mound 9 (WM012-032----)' (SMR File, 13/03/1972). Surveyed in 2012 and described by McGuinness (2012, 28) as following: ‘This ‘mound’ documented in RMP, and a cairn a short distance to S (WM012-032---), were not located after a thorough search by the writer. Levelled monument, possibly a building was situated on reclaimed grassland 200m SW of River Gaine and 100m S of levelled mound (WM012-031-----). Monument described in 1972 as situated on low lying undulating field in grass-land. A large irregular shaped grass-covered mound of small stones, some of which have traces of mortar adhering to them which may suggest that the mound represented the site of a levelled building. • Ballynafid National School, school, 1845–1850 · Regional interest
  Description

  Detached five-bay single-storey former National School, built c.1847, with projecting gable-fronted single-bay single-storey entrance porch to centre of front façade (southwest). Now in use as a community centre. Hipped natural slate roof. Constructed of coursed rubble limestone with square-headed window openings with splayed cut stone surrounds (flush), cut stone sills and replacement windows.' Ballinafid National Schools'. Square-headed doorcases to east face of porch and to east elevation with replacement timber doors. Carved stone plaque to front of entrance porch with inscription: 'These schools erected by a bequest of Mr James Carroll 1847'. Set back from road in own grounds with rubble limestone boundary wall to frontage (southwest). Single-storey extension to northwest corner.
